Looking at the other site it's not the first thing you see. It's the smallest text on the whole home page and it's even a grey while everything else is a bright white. The first thing I notice is the giant fucking picture that takes forever to load to the right pointing to the left because the left is pretty unnoticeable.

I don't know where you live and maybe you are doing this already, but you could also look into submitting your portfolio to commercial studios as a concept artist. Most commercial studios will have an animation department and it's often a nice way to get your foot in the door because, depending on the studio they tend to have a lower volume of applications to go through and are almost ALWAYS looking for new artists since it's one of those jobs where both people rotate in and out and the studio is always short on the help.

If you make good with a commercial studio, there's a really good chance they'll keep calling you back in for random freelancing jobs.

Don't just look around for an application form on their website, too, send them a job inquiry e-mail and ask if they are currently looking for any concept artists and share your link.

You seem to know the "shape" of your shapes. For example, you know the iris of the eye to be an ellipse and how big it is. So just outline it with one stroke. Or keep your scratches on a separate layer, knock the opacity down, make a new layer on top of that, and go over your initial scratches doing clean lines.

I don't keep up too well with those types of communities. You might wanna check out Draw or Die if you don't know it already. It's a bit more involved though.

You might also consider narrowing it own on a particular genre or niche (fantasy, horror, whatever...) and finding communities/groups that caters to that.

There are a few big blogs on tumblr that allows you to submit art that will then be reblogged. It's a cheap way of reaching a lot of people if you're starting out or don't have that big a following. On the con side, many of them have long submission queues, especially the popular ones, but I see it as a fire-and-forget type of promotion; there's no real loss to it.

There are a lot of art related subreddits too. But the tend to be a little more involved because, cmiiw here, you can't just walk in and leave your business card so to speak. So you need to get around that in some way: Say for example that you like drawing fanart, or you have just done a study of a still from GoT or w/e. Then it should be ok for you to just go on whatever relevant subreddit and post that with a watermark url/handle to your main thingie and write "hey, I just watched the latest episode and had to draw [insert character]" or something.

Tagging is also something that you can do. It's probably more of a marginal thing though, but starting out that's what you have to work with.
I used to loath it and didn't give two fucks about it, but now I just do it; it works, and don't care too much about it.
I'll just say this quickly, because this post is getting long: Tumblr only tracks the first 5 tags of your posts, so use them effectively. People aren't gonna follow the tag for an original character you came up with, so just skip that, or save it for the 6th+ that are not tracked but still searchable. Use tags like: character design, illustration, or w/e.

I don't know how involved you like to be, so it's hard for me to say, but that's a couple of suggestions anyway.

It's just a portfolio site, but it's the primary one used by the industry. Companies and other artists in the profession go on there quite a lot so those numbers are made up out of more important people than getting followers on tumblr or DA which is largely just random teens who can't help you in any way except to stroke your ego through increasing your followers number. I know of other people who have gotten work because someone came across them on artstation. I've never had this happen. but I did get approached by a large studio because of this and they made me go through testing for a position (which I ultimately failed...but they did initially see me there, and I don't have many followers at all).
