Where should I put the shadows on this painting? I'll skip the details but just imagine the white shape as a three dimensional rectangle with a cylindrical shape/handle coming out of the face, I'm unsure of how the shadow should look. I was thinking of having the imaginary light source at the top right side of the image. Any redline's or sketches would be appreciated!

Very low on horizon line behind the subject. Your background makes it similar to bloody evening sky when the sun is just about to hide.
I'd utilize this angle. Maybe even push it to the extreme right and low, very low, so you'd have very long shadows going on the ground, could be pretty expressive.

Actually I'm a retard, it's not evening sky but usually morning sky, but you get the memo.
Sun rises on the east and is just tiny-little above the horizon/on the horizon.

I like the sound of that, I'm just worried th unused space in bottom right corner might look weird, I'm unsure as to how to include the handle in the shadow ie how/where it will come out of the rectangle, my lecturer suggested actually creating and lighting the object but I'm too lazy

Thanks, this presents me with a problem however, do you think it would look decent with the object placed further to the right on same sized paper?

i dunno try it out
do some thumbnails
Tell me if you need some other lighting/background, ambient and shadow softness configuration or source located somewhere else.

This is great, would be interested in seeing how it looks with the shadow at a sharper angle like from higher up or from the left hand side if you could? Appreciate this!

This one has stronger ambient light from the background and left side up high.
yet another, soft shadows this time

stop designing dick shaped objects.

Thanks so much for this man! Mind me asking what software you use? This could come in handy! I'm a shitty painter so will be pretty much block colours rather than gradients so something like this will fit well I think

It was actually Catia with its quick render tool, but this is not a program suitable for artists, I guess it would be better just to grab some software for 3D like Blender, Maya or 3ds Max.
I wouldn't recommend CAD like Catia, it has pretty complicated interface and it's used mainly for engineering. Learning those programs is a thing in itself.

So with those programs you can just create simple solids and light them?
This is the original sketch I had just for bumps sake
jesus christ
stop
its perfect without shadow

With those programs you can make fuckhuge assemblies of real life machines, model whole Airbus with all cables and shit, from the smallest drive to the the composite layers of wing, document it and everything.
