Why the excessively messy brushwork on the concrete? You don't have to go quite as stylized as artists like Robh Ruppel, Neil Campbell Ross or Alberto Mielgo but you should definitely pay their approach some heed.

Your rendering isn't overly realistic so having clean textures rather than the blotchy colorised mess can only be an improvement.


Also when resizing your fucking image in photoshop you must realise that it introduces antialiasing around the corners? Duplicate the image a couple of times to remove that.

Honestly it feels to me like you're a high schooler that spent a lot of time sketching but never learning fundies. That's not necessarily a bad thing, you'll have an easier time learning them with your pen mileage and you can get at a decent level within a year or so if you work hard. But right now all you could realistically hope for is a job working on one of these free EVN projects on lemma that never get finished. Selling something? No.

At least the boobs are soft-shaded and have a color-shifted shadow gradient, so the most important part looks nice.

Paint with flats that work well together. Shadows > shift hue towards cooler tones. Lighter areas> shift hue towards warmer tones.

That's the general rule, it's a pretty common coloring technique I see a lot with anime artists, if you google "kawacy coloring tutorial" he did a comparison that illustrates it.

Wat does mainstream mean? I don't see you doing any mainstream "mistakes" (i.e. tumblr nose or ilya kuvshinov samefaces) but any cartoony genre is likely to have been drawn by someone before.

If you want to develop your own style, the best thing you can do is pick whatever tricks work for you here and there, and not worry too much about doing something with a specific grand design in mind.

Oh I remember you. You made the sir knight I complimented.

So I looked through your gallery and I have some advice. You have much mileage but it feels like you're stuck so I hope I can help.

First off, you're good, let yourself know this, it's critical to getting better to understand your lineart, colors, and style(generally) is on point.

What would seem to be lacking in mass is gesture and dynamic compositions. You don't seem to get out of what I'm going to suppose is a comfort zone of neutral poses and plain backgrounds., which is unfortunate because you seem to understand most the fundamentals.

Try to complete something that isn't essentially a character sheet/portrait. Stop having them look forward so much have them strike a pose, or do an action that tells a story. Like one of your images has a hulking man sitting on the bottom of the ocean surrounded by a pair of sharks, which is a good story and image, but you're lacking any fluidity or dynamic construction to the piece. None of the set pieces are doing anything and the camera angle is boring.

Even if you doing feel everythings right try to shoot for being more interesting with your angle and actions of your characters. If you do this you'll improve in pretty much no time, it's sad to see you not strive for more. People like your non fanwork stuff so you're obviously doing something right, just get out of that comfort zone and complete some shit. You'll become a pro in no time.

It's not really an issue with the abdomen, I understand the bed sinking in, but more the upper torso/back (It's not sinking into anything, it's elevated on the heart pillow). It seems to have less volume than the abdomen and I don't know if that's a mix of the position of the shoulders and what I can only see as an indication of the neck, but it's a weird area.

That and the butts/vagina still look off though.

None of it's extreme, it's still a good image, rather critique than just do nothing.

This is looking darn good to me, tho! The only thing that kinda irks me is the fingers of the person holding her legs... If that's meant to be a man, his fingers are really slim. I've not really got myself out there for commissions because I think I should still focus on getting decent, work much faster. I also barely have any time to draw.

Some people have insisted and I've taken their requests. Unfortunately one has missed 5 payment dates set by himself. another is making me do endless revisions and the most recent requested a landscape piece which is quite hard for me.

turn everything grayscale, hide colors/rim lights to block in main shadows, keep it simple or keep it harder, your choice, play smart

draw straight lines thinking them in 3D from the light source and think where they would make tangents with the forms of the figure/objects

think where it doesn't pass it will cast a shadow instead

if you want light on her face you need another light source, bounces shouldn't work from her own chest, as it shouldn't recieve any light

before doing light, block in masses of flat color to everything, finish it then step to lighting, better complete one whole fundie task before the next, so you don't switch mindsets and stay 100% focus on one thing at a time

I just checked and drawabox doesn't have lessons about lighting/values and skips directly to composition damn, thought it was more complete

to eyeball where the coreshadow should be placed due to the light source location, you have to think the light source as a vanishing point

is it close? > conic
is it far? paralel lines

imagine yourself inside the picture and try to move your point of view to make her head match with the moon behind, that direction is where the light source is pushing light, where it makes a tangent, coreshadow starts (it divides light masses from dark masses), and from the core shadow the vanishing point continues until it touches the next object, as it will make a secondary core shadow (as it will cast shadow)

make a study from imagination with boxes and spheres, then do the same with the POV/perspective grid you have there and you will see things easier with accuracy

better to avoid starting to mix a lot of lighting effects from start, focus to get main fundies right

btw, your face is wrong
mouth goes to the end of the left eye, too large
nose is too far from the chin, her nose holes-jaw nose holes-eyebrows proportion is not 1:1
you can't put a 3rd eye between her current eyes, there's no enought space
she's not even looking to the right that much, her nose is far from the cheek bone
if you want animu eyes you can't expect to place them on non stylized head, they don't fit, so you put them close, and it looks bad

it really triggers me you can draw forms but still take choices to make that bad face

try drawing the eyeball globe, it would be almost touching :')
BTW!!! you might want to decide your lighting setup on the figure first and THEN deduce the light source position, instead of choosing first the light source, because you might make a blind bad choice, like the case, as nothing interesting would be lighted up

you don't have to change your mindset on the sketching phase, once you're done with it, just start all over on new layers, use as reference a clean lineart you like to take inspiration from and it will help you as a recipe about how to do cleaner lineart on top

I do have a Surface Pro 2 but lately I've found that its screen has become a bit inadequate due to its size, also windows 10 introduced some issues with palm rejection, I also want to get better at drawing so that's why I've been using my Note 4 a lot more these days. Anyway, I plan on rolling back to w8 and buy an ipad pro to speed up my workflow and do more proper colored pieces.

I think pic related is what you meant, I consider it done but I have not posted it yet because the person who requested it has not paid me yet. I did try to introduce some texture in her sweater and the lower part of the creature's jaw, it was probably not enough though.

The SP2 does have pressure sensitivity (1024 levels just like entry level intuos tablets). However I do not use PS for linework, I mostly do that part with Sketcbook Pro on my Note 4 or clip studio on the Surface.

If you are having issues with your SP2 pressure sensitivity try the Wacom feel drivers:

They are not the same as the ones that come bundled with the SP2, imho they are considerably more responsive.

I think the perspective is fine apart from the girl on pedestal and the two guys in the middle. The pedestal is above horizon line (or almost directly on horizon) so you should be looking up at it, not down.
Horizon line appears to be on Miku's eye level so if those two guys are standing, their heads sould definitely be above Miku.
Also the background could use less contrast to bring the main subject forward.

what do you think of this? I am very used to drawing orderly with lines but I wanted to try a practice where you 'draw' more with your feelings and avoid setting down inhibiting lines, so anatomy is less of a focus, the anatomy I do struggle with so I end up putting a lot of powder into that.

I'm not sure if this color choice is the best one, I was originally going with reddish pink and blue back ground, but when I accidentally added black I noticed that it became more grounded or real ?

But then again I'm working with pretty light colors then I throw in a dark black and that sounds like a technical no-no
