Because we should not have to make new threads or post in draw threads with our fundamental exercises.
Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make your mom proud.

AVOID asking unrelated questions, there is a question thread for that.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead (also images shouldn't come out accidentally sideways with this method)

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

>Thread study: Try to draw/paint the opening or any other following images.
Feel free to post your original works as well if you're trash.

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

I love Jin Roh man, such a great movie. I think your painting is a good start, but it seems like it's unfinished or lacking somehow. I think it feels a bit washed out, and then it feels very flat. So I tried to add some more variety to it. I broke up the background shapes to have some smoke, and some warmer areas like maybe from fire. It's darker for more mood.

The armor you painted with one brush size, so I tried to get a bit more variety in there, and also tried to make the material look shinier.

Story-wise the image is lacking. the side view and flat background and lack of a pose mean it seems like nothing is happening. It's a bit cheesy but I had him pointing a gun at an unseen person in the smoke so there is some mystery and action, and I turned his head away from us very slightly so that there is not a complete side view which tends to feel a bit artificial at times.

fun with a pencil and then how to draw by loomis. NOTHING ELSE, since you can get them online its not like you have to buy them, go check the book thread. draw shapes in all perspective angles, learn to shade them as you go along the road begin slowly drawing anatomy, you NEED to know how to mimic shapes before knowing anatomy or it will all be correct but flat.

I did a repaint for you, but it isn't the best, but basically, you're supposed to be painting the values to pronounce the forms around the pear and the apple. The shadows/mid tones/highlights should fit around the pear and apple, while yours makes it flat. Your textures also seem to be just "painted on" instead of following the form of the object, as shown in the apple. Basically think about the form you are painting and lay it down as a 3D object and not 2D object.

>>
>>2696298
So my issue is form? The paint job is okay?
>>
>>2696305
that's not gesture
>>
>>2696305
Too much construction in there for gestures, especially if you are in animation. Take a look at Vilppu and see how he approaches gestures, you should be doing something more in line with that, though it doesn't need to be exactly his method. Walt Stanchfield's Drawn to Life also has lots of great examples of gestures by animators in it.
>>
>>2696316
The paintjob was pretty good but you need to use darker values to differentiate the low, mid, and highlight tones so it can add to the form of what you're painting.

It's just depressing how 99% of /ic/ doesn't understand what a gesture drawing is. Even the ones with good skills.

A gesture drawing is not a fucking contour drawing, or a figure drawing. If there are buttcheeks, nipples, navels, facial features, you aren't drawing the fucking gesture. Gesture is the flow of "energy" throughout the pose. Tilt, lean and twist. Similarly, a figure drawing with features removed =/= gesture.

Question: How important is gesture?
I know it seems like a dumb question, but hear me out. I've been finding it easier to draw after studying books like Bridgman (which have little focus on gesture/rhythm) rather then other things like Villpu or Hampton (which have heavy focus on gesture/rhythm). All I'm asking is whether or not I should continue with what IS working and study Bridgman further or if I should just suck it up and give gesture drawing another try.

Also, Can I get some critique on pic related?

I guess I'll try my best to tell you what I was attempting to do

>his left shoulder/chest/back looks pretty fucked

I guess we're not always in a symmetrical stance, was attempting to have the left side come up more, in doing that the pectorals had to follow through upwards and connect to the deltoid, same for the lats, connecting somewhere around the posterior delts.

>forward foot is twisted, should go the opposite direction and more of the heel should be hidden

Yeah I just suck dick at drawing feet

>has a slight muffintop

Obliques hidden by pants but if that's how it looks I guess I'm doing something wrong

>right arms upper arm is too small

It's twisted upwards, so instead of showing a front view of the biceps which would hide majority of the arm, it has a slight side view including a portion of the triceps

>forearms too big in relation to upper arm

In open palm shots, forearms tend to be wider will post ref for this

Even though I said all that I still acknowledge it doesn't look as anatomically correct as I intended it to be
>>
>>2696936
Sorry, I don't think I made it clear. They aren't meant to be gestures. I was mainly trying to make snazzy box figures with light anatomy attached.
Also, I know what you mean by looking dead, I'm just asking if the entire figure needs to be based off of gesture or if I can get away with minimal gesture and do figures like in the Bridgman books.

Put a skeleton with correct proportions underneath that bulgy mess of a musculature and most of your problems will be solved.

>>2696929
>>2696943
Whew lad, how do I put this. Bridgman was very good with gesture, you just can't see it, 'cause he said it with his drawing instead of literally.

In drawing, there is a big golden rule you must always follow - work from simple to complex and remember that the further you get into drawing, the less important stuff you'll be dealing with.
Gesture is the very first thing you do when drawing the figure and it's also the most important one. The only way you can avoid it is if you don't draw the figure at all.

I suggest you lay off the most advanced anatomy book in the world and focus on something simple like Loomis, Proko or Drawabox.

Drawabox would be preferable, because it doesn't focus on figure drawing - and that's exactly what you need. Figure is impossible to grasp without learning the basics.

So I haven't drawn shit for like 10+ years but my interest has returned.
What are some good practices for making shapes, lines etc?
How do I work away shaky lines, how do I form things without making tons of small fuzzy lines?
I draw only using my wrist most of the time because I haven't really tried anything else plus I generally have very little desk space - but what are important methods to learn instead?
I also assume that getting good at pen&paper is very important BEFORE starting to use a drawing tablet?

even if your pic is supposed to be exaggerated, the obliques are in the wrong spot. it would be sorta helpful to have a navel for reference. i could be wrong about this though

when you do references like youve done (attempting to copy) what i like to do in my mind is draw straight lines from parts of the reference image going vertical and sometimes horizontal. i drew some on the image for you and then put them on your drawing aligning the lines by the green line touching her left shoulder. this should show you where your perspective was wrong horizontally. if you drew horizontal lines it would show where you were wrong vertically.

im already using my elbow, these are like 1/2 of the actual size i drawn them. Also why paper? On digital i can just delete the circle and draw it again 100times as slow as i need to get the perfect circle.

ok so you say, paper is better to practice technical stuff, but it actually doesnt matter what you use to actually start understanding how to draw stuff and actually see in 3d. So if i cant draw perfect line or perfect circle, because i didnt practice on paper, i dont care, all i care is actually learning to draw stuff i want. If i need il draw on paper, but right now, im satisfied with improving my other skills.

You're approaching this in a very, very inefficient way. Composition is absolutely excessive here. Heck, even figure drawing is excessive here. Do yourself a favor and learn to draw a straight line before tackling anything this complex. Visit Drawabox and start from there.

Technically it is visible on both sides, but on the inside of the arm it's only visible near the elbow a bit and very rarely does it have any form to it (it just looks flat pretty much). Sometimes on very ripped bodybuilders in some poses where they flex their arms you can see it on the inside near the elbow it will pop out a bit in a sort of small triangular shape, but mostly the biceps and triceps will be what you see.

Anon, if that's a gesture, then a 5 year old kid is a gesture master.

Gesture implies drawing a person in a position. It doesn't matter if the person has nipples and buttcheeks or not.

Do part 1 exercises to get rid of scratchy lines. The symbol drawing isn't gone, go read Fun with a Pencil and your boxes need to have straight parallel lines, e.g your bottom chest looks like the lid is curved because the lines aren't straight.

Also i love cock fridge raider is cute.
>>
>>2696834
I've read that when drawing textures it's important to know where and how much detail to use. The right one looks incredible busy since there is so much detail. Left one looks decent, as it tells you immediately that it's fur (or similar) because of the outline, and the minor details. Middle could use work I believe, but I am not familiar with how metal textures work so I can not give you an opinion on it.

>>2697375

i feel like when i draw gestures i just draw a shittier version of the figure drawings i do normally.

am i not supposed to use my construction lines? what precisely are the differences between a gesture and a regular figure sketch? after watching the videos and reading the guides i still dont completely understand just what a gesture is meant to be.

maybe im just a sperg but someone help me out here.
>>
>>2697491
maybe i should break into two different studies then?
>>
>>2697560
It is the line of gesture for the form of the three balls combined.
>>
>>2697592
the differnce is you have like 30 seconds to draw the gesture, so basically you look at the reference and only have few seconds to draw the main motion features, you dont have time to think, you basically enter trance like state, when you manically draw gesture figure.
>>
>>2697606
but prokos videos says one can take up to 10 minutes.

>trance
this doesnt help, there is a mindset for everything.

>>2697603
but if someone just saw the line they wouldnt know that there were three spheres there, they would just think it were a pipe or something. i understand that the balls are laid out that way, but what about that line defines it as a gesture?
>>
>>2697616
Well, what you just said. It is the line that shows how the balls are laid out, that's what makes it a gesture. Like, that's pretty much all there is to it, maybe you are overthinking this.
>>
>>2697616
to learn draw correct gesture figures it can take years of practice even for masters.

And wth are you gonna draw for 10mins ? gesture is about basic body motion its about how the body is position, about where the weight is positioned, it doesnt concert itself with actual shape of reference (for example reference might be a fuck, but you still draw same gesture figure like always, you dont concert yourself with big dick or small dick or big tits or small tits, these are all countour features)
>>
>>2697533
>>2697535
what're those lines called again? architect lines? grid lines?
>>
>>2697533
i think you put the vanishing points a little too close together.

the right circle is bigger and it shouldnt be.
>>
>>2697616
>they wouldnt know that there were three spheres there, they would just think it were a pipe or something
Firstly, it's a heavily simplified version. Secondly, the purpose of gesture is not to tell you what the subject is. It's to show the flow/energy of the subject. It doesn't take 10 years on top of Mt Fuji to figure this out, so ignore the other anon. You just need it to "click" in your brain.
>>
>>2697702
>flow/energy

How do i properly measure stuff by using the thumb-on-pencil technique?

Sure, i can get the measurements that way, but how do i transfer the scale of the picture/model to the paper when the paper is obviously smaller?

Measurements are my total failure when copying from life.

i want you to be more specific
>>
>>2698380

Get Keys to Drawing and do the exercises in it.

Get simple objects, put them under a lamp, and draw them. A tissue box, book, etc.

Post the results and we can actually give you a critique.

People study for a very long time to draw accurate and appealing human figures. You need to have a good understanding of the various fundamental skills of art and anatomical recognition of the human body.

Start simple, with a beginner book, and we can give you advice. There is really nothing specific anyone can tell you for this picture that would be of benefit to you.

Not bad, you can spot most of the mistakes while flicking two images. Face is too wide overall, nostrils are too far up, eyelids are open jsut too much, top of the head is too wide, the shape of the nose is different. Try looking at some other views of this bust and you'll see how elements relate to each other better.

There's also an issue of local tones, you values are slightly off, especially at the bottom of the face. The brightest plane will be closest to the light, much as the darkest shadow, the rest is less contrasty and fits in the spectrum between the two. Always compare your values, which is really easy with the planes. Top of the cheek under the eye is brighter than everything under it, reflected light is never brighter than the direct light and so on.

Also, looking at the base, i suggest you draw some drinking glasses, cups or something similar. Don't bother with tone or reflections or any of that shit, jsut do the shapes in perspective, look how open the ellipses are.

Have a quick shitty paintover on me.

This is why practicing from life is better, you can look what goes where easily.

Glad somebody is doing proper studies, instead of fucking photocopying.

Question: Do I have to practice all those lines and boxes every day? There's so many different ways to do things I can't choose which one to do.Some places say I should just draw from life and others say I should learn perspective and then anatomy and then I see something that says I shouldn't learn perspective first. I should just give up right?

PLEASE HOW DO I GIT GUD AT DRAWING KAWAI ANIMU FACES. I'm so bad at eyes. Everything else looks fine, but the eyes are always wonky, out of place, never good enough. Any tips please, I don't want to draw like Loomis, but something stylized like pic related... is loomis the way here? Do I just try to replicate the artist I like over and over again? I'm willing to try but I don't know which path to follow. All the "how to draw anime face" tutorials I find are either bad or only one type of pose. Sometimes my sketch looks okay then I lineart and it looks bad...

copy, copy, copy. structure comes from the mind. style comes from the source.
and I think you already know this but... style really isn't an issue if your original structure is great. the faces are the ridiculously easy parts.

>>
>>2698493
you learn to draw em..... try copying a few styles of people you like or learn real eyes and stylize them when you master them.
>>
>>2698493
That is a completely different stylisation, age of person, etc... .

Also, the iris are more like cameras in the style you want to replicate.

So your method to render doesn't work at all for what you want.

If you lack good sources, there is the japanese moe bishoujo book series and similar stuff. some of them deal with digital drawing properly (moe bishoujo chara no tsukuri kata.) The book also shows how to make proper lineart before coloring.

Also, you need to understand how the person stylises real life. No, you don't need to draw from life, but that guy had a certain body type and face type in mind when he drew what he drew and he really thought every line through to bring that out.
>>
>>2698501
You're gonna make it... right into the beginner thread.

Scratchy lines, fucked proportions, symbol drawing, etc. You need loomis or if you don't want that, at least understand the planes of the face and practice drawing and combining 3d shapes
>>
>>2698528
Sorry I'm fucking retarded I thought this was the draw thread

But still the advice should still stand
>>
>>2698474
It's good to have peter han's exercises them as a warmup to sort of get your mind into drawing mode.
>>
>>2698383
when you're doing the technique, you make a mental note of the RELATIVE distances from one point to another (example: nipple to bellybutton) and use that as a guideline for making correct proportions. You're not literally sitcking your thumb onto your canvas.

Construction is THE biggest thing in making my art not look like shit, right?

I've been on/ff with drawing people for a while. But I can never really get passed drawing a face. It's the features that wrecked me. Maybe it's because I was drawing too small or something, but it always looked like shit.

certain artstyles change body proportions.
is it correct for one person learning a certain art style to learn from reality then modify, or learn entirely from the artstyle they want to draw in?
