Because we should not have to make new threads or post in draw threads with our fundamental exercises.
Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make your mom proud.

AVOID asking unrelated questions, there is a question thread for that.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead (also images shouldn't come out accidentally sideways with this method)

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

There's a new sticky in town! You can see it at:

>Thread study: Try to draw/paint the opening or any other following images.
Feel free to post your original works as well if you're trash.

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

Is there a website or program that will let me view the ribcage at any angle? I am having a very hard time translating even the basic ribcage shape at various angles. This site helps me but only gives me a 360 view. http://www.turbosquid.com/3d-models/female-ribcage-skeleton-3d-3ds/1025036

Basic forms (cube, sphere, cylinder), and especially how they connect ot each other. It's important to feel that they take up 3D space, and aren't just flat, ambiguous lines on paper. It's hard to get, but you do it by trying, and analyzing what went wrong. Once you understand forms, and can operate eith them freely, drawing gets really easy.
>>
>>2692675
Also going around surface of a form, it's something you have to learn
>>
>>2692672
simplify it to an egg or a cuboid. They're easier to draw than a full detail rib cage.

What is the proper "form" while drawing?
I thought it was as simple as pen+paper but apparently there's a difference based on wether you're sitting or standing, or if you're using only your wrist (easy) or your shoulder is involved in the process (fuckin' hard).

What does /itc/ think is the best , or at least necessary pose/position to draw properly?

OK guys I have a question.
When and how should a beginner start making the transition from just pencil and paper to other traditional media? And which medium is best? Watercolor, oil, etc?
>>
>>2693270
Whenever you want and there is no best medium. Some mediums are more difficult than others, but that's it.
>>
>>2693270
>When and how should a beginner start making the transition from just pencil and paper to other traditional media?

Whenever you like, but keep in mind that if you can't draw it'll probably mean your paintings will still look crap.

>And which medium is best?

What's your goal? Find a medium that appeals to you, they can get vastly different results and the results you like are a matter of personal taste. If there was an objectively superior medium, people probably wouldn't bother with the alternatives.

I'm not the type to really listen to people and experience things for myself before judging them, so I would say everything at CGMA is pretty good if you have the opportunity to take them all. It also starts in an order, so it'll help you build your foundation exactly right.

man you've kind of regressed back into symbol drawing on that face. the eye isn't just a flat rectangle, and the iris shouldn't be so damn large. if you want to tough it out on loomis, painstakingly compare every line you're drawing to every line in the diagram because that obviously isn't happening here. i'd say try still lifes and simpler objects, though.

The guy's art looking traced has nothing to do with Loomis, and /ic/ hardly pushes traditional art. Going "kek they're just untalented" doesn't magically make that guy's art not suspiciously line up to his reference.

Yes, theoretically a skilled artist can get that close if they really tried - I'm still not gonna buy it when some guy in a beginner thread throws it out.

It really looks bad for a drawing, and I only get disappointed with myself because I expect much more from what I can do. A person who can free hand that much obviously will be much better using reference. No secret here, and honestly it's not even that accurate.
I fucked up the lips pretty badly and the neck is completely messed up...which is reasonable since I didn't really focus on those areas as much as the eyes (because I didn't want them to be cartoony). I still failed though.

>>
>>2693818
Eyy I remember you. It looks better, but in the end you still get that weird texture on the shading because you 1. abused soft brushes/smudging too much, and 2. should've kept some of the values more simple as opposed to trying to overblend it like you did on the stage left side of her face. another main issue is you put black outlines around everything - bottom of nose, bottom of eye. You need to focus on drawing with values instead of such unnatural-looking contours. The hair looks good, so try and approach the face like you did the hair I guess. (then again it might be because it's all black).

In most of these the general structure and proportions are pretty good (though a couple are a bit off). If you want to draw women's faces though, having too many lines on it really takes away from the feminine qualities. I would either do your construction very lightly or erase it entirely, and make sure that every line you do put down counts for something.

Is bigger better when it comes to studying and practicing? I'm referring to loomis heads, my base circles doesn't go any larger than the extent of my wrist Even though I'm already actively using my shoulders. The larger it gets, the uglier the drawing becomes, placements and all. This may have been caused by two years of drawing in a really small tablet (5x3)
>>
>>2694432
Artists would always encourage you to work larger, because you will begin to work in a very careful style which is banal to working in smaller perspectives, and you might find that large can actually be more forgiving; you can correct details and anomalies at smaller incurs than in the smaller sizes?

So I ditched that whole "upside down Picasso" exercise and took an anons advice, started practicing how to construct heads since that's what I'm enjoying right now.

Honestly have to say that even though these are extremely simple (and probably bad, need some criticism here), I'm at least having fun with it.

Also been watching a lot of Proko videos. He is slightly annoying but his tips really come in handy.

I will keep practicing these heads, but I don't know which features of the face I should start practicing.

Although this makes me think you did. If you haven't learned that loomis can be adapted to literally any style (every top japanese illustrator knows & uses this) you might want to start now, because you're 11 months behind.

PS Don't come to these threads with thin skin. You came to get critiqued, got critiqued, and got defensive. So clearly you secretly came here for praise. No matter how retarded your critic is being, you look twice as bad arguing with him because it shows you can't take a simple "It looks bad".

You need a balance in terms of details or else everything will feel too "noisy." Feng in this video talks about some mech he's drawing and how the leg of the mech further from the camera won't be as detailed since you can infer details from the other, heavily-detailed leg.

c'mon man. shapes. think of the shapes!
>>

You need to fix the empty spaces you accidently left with lines and points and even out the shade with adding more lines. And the shadow lines on the ground should actually hit the edge.

It seems to be a shading exercise, not a realistic light/shadow exercise, so you should feel more free with laying the shades. If it was meant to be a shadow/light exercise, too, then I recommend you don't do that. Mixing 2 complicated exercises as a beginner only means you can't concentrate on either and you do both wrong. Stick with the shading for now.

Also, dunno if you meant to really crosshatch, randomly hatch for now. Crosshatching is a much more advanced effect and not exactly a good beginner exercise. Beginners just want to do it first, because they see professional artists use it all the time and try this themselves right from the start.

Map each place containing a specific tone with that tone, and never go too dark, because your medium is inherently subtractive and you can take away light but cannot add it, meaning your background tone is the highest tone

There's promise here

Work on thinking/building in 3d shapes; this illustration feels flat despite having some dimensional cues.

Line fidelity needs to be worked on some more; vary those lines. It'll help combat the flat feeling

I can't see any chicken scratch, but there are a few squiggly lines. Make sure you're placing lines in one fairly quick arm motion; use that shoulder of yours.

Did you start with an under-drawing?

I realize it's fun to try and tackle faces first, but i urge all anon doing this fella to try doing picrelated first, for a number of reasons.

First of all, starting learning from doing a face is a very bad idea, since there's a lot of confusing and misleading stuff in there.

Second of all, if you're doing a complex shape from a photo, you better be trying to do that from life first, to feel out the shape.

And to add insult to injury, that image is edited to bring the tones closer together, which makes it a bad image to study from. Honestly, anon posting these shitty picutre he liked to "study" is just impeding your progress.

Otherwise Bridgman has some planar head stuff but it's not that well presented in my opinion.

buy charcoal and start working in shadow shapes. Use medium and soft compressed on newsprint. Watch yourself improve like 20% overnight.

>>2695454
It's okay. Proportions are good, but you have to alternate contrast to make stuff read. Right now it's pretty hard to tell where the forms on the body turn, like the leg, because the value of the shading is the same as that of the lines you use to delineate form. Same with the tail.

also, work more slowly. your big fills on the top and bottom look like shit. DESU, graphite isn't good for big spaces, or even full drawings really. You should be using charcoal instead.

My only tip is to draw some cylinders. Start with a one tone jug or something similar, and set up one hard light. Then build the cylinder, starting with two "caps" (and add more if your object is not a perfect cylinder), that is, ellipses, and then fill in the tone.

Where did you learn this technique for trees?
>>
>>2695639
I did a lot of studies on trees a while back because I couldn't figure out how to do nice leaves and then I realized that leaves look best unplanned so I began to try out different ways to get a leafy texture. As for the trunks and branches I just practiced tracing and studying how the flow of the tree works. I still am quite rough when it comes to drawing trees but in time I hope to get to where I want to be.

Are there places or ways I can improve my anatomy or poses? I find it really hard to make one without using a model of some type.

>>2695677
Build a model of your own then keep it in your head to use at all times. That's what we all do.
>>
>>2695674
I'm on Sketchbook Pro Mobile on a tablet, so I just took a lightly textured brush and drew lots of small strokes while changing colour by blending multiple greys and dark reds at the same time. It's a lengthy and probably inefficient process.

I don't think you're a beginner; the shading lines are too obsoletely equidistant and the construction lines are too fluid; if you were a beginner the lines would be multiple and sprawling, but it is actually a very good study.
>>
>>2695673
make use of folds and light subtle changes in values due to the 'wavy' texture of flattened/tight cloth. also it might help to use some very light (in relation to the local values) lines that go in the direction and perpendicular direction of the fabric to imply the weave.
>>
>>2695776

Thank you for the compliment.

I may be decent when drawing from a reference but I suck at anything from imagination. I have minimal anatomy knowledge and my understanding of perspective is basic. So I am a beginner:

I struggled with the girl, the guy's foreshortened legs and in the close-up I didn't even align the eyes correctly (a basic construction failure)
