Hey /ic/, I've always wondered how artists were about to support themselves financially while creating art like manga artists and the like, before or after they made money from art. My question to you guys is how do you support yourself financially while you practice/create art? A job? What kind? Does it provide enough to get all the materials you need to create?
> I'm working a full time job at an oil changing service center that pays decent enough to pay rent($200 a month, live in a house with friends), $315 for car payment+insurance, $40 for cellphone, $55 for medical, and for gas+food for the month plus extra to save or spend on misc needs($50 into saving taken directly from each paycheck before). If you have any advice to share to fellow /ic/ comrades and lurkers please share! However, I do look forward to seeing how everyone manages to stay afloat while struggling to become a better artist.
I work a professional job that pays me 70k a year.

Luckily I did a lot of my initial art grind while in high school and just after, so I didn't need to fully support myself all that time. The trick once you do have bills is to just live cheaply. I take the bus, cook all my meals, and very rarely go out places or spend money on alcohol. I also don't buy clothes ever or impulse purchases. It helps that I'm not a materialistic person. If you do this you can survive off a part time job, or if you have a full time job you can save up enough to eventually quit and take off enough time to get an art career off the ground. I've heard of other people having a girlfriend or wife to help support them by having a second income, but I haven't had that luxury.

I've been of highschool for a couple years and attempted college but it wasn't for me. I'm not really materialistic either so it helps, but the car payment I have is the result of my first car breaking down. Wanted a more reliable vehicle so I got a used one from a dealer and still owe $7,500 on it, so until I pay it off I won't be able to save most of my checks from work.

And taking the bus in your city isn't an option? Or bicycling or even a moped or something? Cars eat up enormous amounts of money.
Otherwise just make a budget and track all your spending each month. There may be something in there that surprises you in how much you are needlessly spending on it.

I worked part time for a few years, now I secretly draw furry porn for money and spend the rest of my time doing real art and slowly building up a portfolio so I can apply to irl studio jobs.
Furry commissions only take about 20 hours a week, I only need $400 a month to live at the moment though so I'm lucky.
>tfw freelance artist
>tfw thinking of moving to a place like Poland so my expenses are a fraction of what they are now
>my income will stay the same or even increase because my clients are international

Unfortunately I need my car as I have to drive to various places for my job.

How, bitcoin?
How did you all go about building clients/finding paid work?
In the process of slowly building a portfolio but the lack of paid work is difficult.
Debating between sending a small (2-3 image) selection to art directors or sending more but having a noticeable dip in quality since the paintings are older.

I just sent off tons of emails to art directors and companies with a link to my portfolio. If you have some work experience already then making a nice resume and attaching it to the emails seems to help.
A lil question - how do you do taxes? Does your state recognize you as a registered freelancer? Do you tax your paypal/patreon income?
I'm still in high school so I have little idea, but it sounds intimidating sending 20% of the little I make off to some jewlords.
That one dude drawing Overwatch porn said he only uses bitcoin, has a foreign bank account and uses his house and car on rent only to avoid taxes completely.

welcome to deing an adult
>>2695831
As the other anon said, welcome to being an adult. I don't understand this mindset of taxes going to the "evil jews". Keeping a country running relatively smoothly on all areas isn't free by any means. You are supporting your society by paying taxes and one day it might be you who need help. Don't be a lil' bitch, contribute!

and to add to his question: would registering just the medium and big commissions cut it? like, leave the small ones out (considering your income is not made up of a lot of small ones)
>>2695651
that's basicaly what sycra did, isn't it
Well i recommend you as much, but slavic life is kinda plain
>>2695645
i would love to earn some money like that, but i mainly focus on enviro so my anatomy kinda sucks
>>2696127
Do you even need to be good at anatomy for furry commissions though?
>>2696147
