I have around 550. It's been increasing at around the same rate (~30-60 a month) since I started.

Artists with large amounts of followers, did you hit "breakthrough" points where you got a sudden large rise in followers, or did your ratio of followers / month gradually increase? If it's the latter I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, my art is definitely better than when I started my tumblr.

I think its just pandering really or being extremely good. If youre not doing either then... Like I got around 300 followers in a week starting and its probably absolutely due to the niche and pornographic nature of my blog. You want some punchy ones in the first 5, I tend to put some general (like "art" or "artists on tumblr") as well as one or two specific to your subject (if it's fanart, the fandom. If you drew a knight, "knight" or "fantasy", etc).

It's about finding a balance - large tags means you're up against a lot of competition and your art will get swallowed up by the mass of other stuff pretty quick. Basically you get a flash in the pan where you can potentially get a lot of eyes on your stuff but it won't last. Meanwhile, more specific tags might get you a longer exposure to a smaller but more interested audience.

If you write joke tags, put them at the end.

Follower count doesn't do anything but feed a worthless ego. It doesn't showcase the real value of your work. If you have actual work experience and connections with companies and other employers offline, that's more valuable than having a 20k online following on tumblr, most of which would never actually pay for your art and are very content having access to it for free. I Have between 400-500 It goes up and down constantly. Are you following a consistent schedule to space out and upload your drawings everyday, if not most days of the week? All the new art blogs I see that gain a loyal following tend to upload their drawings everyday. The only people I notice that don't upload consistently but have loyal followers usually have a unique style and have been in the internet drawing scene for 10+ years.

If you haven't already, I highly recommend setting up a queue system to help you do this automatically(assuming you can create a few drawings everyday or you have a massive backlog of art laying around somewhere).

Just keep posting. If a drawing doesn't get much attention compared to the other images in your gallery, theres still a chance someone else might enjoy and share it around. If you REALLY hate something you drew, there's nothing wrong with removing it from your gallery.

Not the best advice, but you should try to keep your posts, even the ones that don't do well. I mean, if you genuinely hate a specific drawing you posted, there's no shame in deleting it. For the drawings that don't do well, I'd keep them up if you feel like they don't give off a weird vibe compared to the other drawings in your gallery that did well. It's pretty rare, but sometimes someone will come across your drawing(s) that didn't do well and enjoy them.

This leads them to liking or reblogging your content, giving both your image and your blog more attention. One drawing my friend made 3 months ago wen't from 9-12 notes to over a thousand notes a few weeks later due to this. Something similar also happened to two of my drawings awhile back too(not in the thousands though). Like I said, its pretty rare, but you never know, someone might enjoy and help spread your drawing around.

You could also create a new page on your tumblr named scraps, alt art, other, or etc to post any "shitty" drawings you have. But again, if you have any drawings YOU don't enjoy, there's no shame in deleting them from your page.

You could get a lot of "I need money last minute" commissions, you could sell a lot at conventions, you could get extra cash via patreon.
