It is very useful when youre struggling with a pose and you cant picture in your brain but thats about it. Its a reference and just like any other reference you arent supposed to trace it or anything.
Just pose your doll, understand wtf is going on and draw.

Also i would recommend drawing from life and doing anatomy studies a lot cuz thats the only way youre gonna be understanding the forms and shapes of the human body which are essential.

The advantage of this is you can pose it anyway you want. The advantage of photos is its a picture of an actual human which is better for you to learn from.

I've only used it once, for a really difficult angle I couldn't figure out. If you're using it for everything you're overdoing it.

Stylized or not, it's better to apply actual fundamental knowledge over the model to draw out your sketch, and there you go, a alternative to a photo that you can't find the right example for.

I've never used reference photos and then traced over them to design my characters.
I used to be the worst shit but now thanks to several figure drawing books and mileage I'm creating better figures.

On the other hand, I have a friend who traces for everything, drawing rooms, characters, hands..
He had a decent level when he started school, but now he hasn't improved at all in 3 years of art school and he clearly has no understanding of 3D space and construction.

<--- Look at this picture, this is how I believe you should learn to construct anything, first understand its 3D properties and bear them in mind all the time while you draw. It's worth it in the long run OP.
