How is life different for you after making it? Any stories from the other side for people still wallowing in the mud?
>>
I didn't get a penny the world was as hostile to me as before and all my energy was gone making other people rich. I have the potential reality of watching my loved ones die never seeing me actually being successful in front of me. I still think someone might do me a favour but it seems very unlikely.
>>
>>2664240
Define "making it".
>>
>>2664257
Not Op but I would define it as living off of your art in any way
Idk if others think the same
>>
>>2664284
An exhibition and a national paper write up would be MAKING IT , still might not get a penny however
>>
>>2664257
OP here. For most people it means either getting a good job as an artist or getting to live comfortably by doing freelance. Not sure what it would mean for comic artists. Getting published, i guess?
>>
>>2664284
>>2664290
Then I've potentially "made it" according to your definitions since I live off my art, though I don't really count it since I am really underpaid and I struggle to make enough to live off of.

Also nothing changed from before to after. I still deal with depression and still hate my art.
>>
>>2664301
>ion and still hate my art.
You hate your art? I love my art but everybody else hates it. If I hated my art I think I would stop. No offence but that's a sad reply.
Can we cheer you up?
>>
>>2664305
It's normal for people to hate their own art..
>>
>>2664305
It's best to hate your art

If you don't hate what you're making now, how could you possibly improve?
>>
>>2664301
Can you post your art? What exactly do you do art wise?

> that feeling when your art stops offending yourself

Is this how it feels to make it?
>>
>>2664338
>>2664342
I don't feel like posting an image really since it can be tracked back to me through reverse searching and in that post I was whining about not making much and being depressed. I do generic fantasy art though for various games if you're wondering. Nothing special.

I "made it" about a month ago. It's nice. I enjoy drawing and painting much more now. For how little effort I was putting in it sure felt like the fucking weight of the world was on my shoulders and it wasnt relaxing or fun at all.

That's probably the thing I'd tell people is it gets easier the harder you work. The more thought you put into what you are doing the more fun you will have. Sometimes when you don't know how to use the artistic parts of your brain it feels like you are just faking it even if you are putting in 10 hours a day or something crazy like that. But it definitely gets easier you just have to make that leap from thinking what you know isnt good enough to thinking its fine what you already know.

And that sounds contradictory but there's a part of your brain you aren't using when you draw before you "make it" because you don't trust it. The part of your brain that just accepts what you are capable of.
>>
>>2664361
I want to see how good you are though.

Simply add the image and scribble over some part or something so it can't be reverse image search.
>>
>>2664318
>>2664344

I see it all the time outside of /ic/. It's pretty common, I don't know about "normal".
>>
>>2664361

>>2664364
I'm sort of middle of the pack I guess? I think I'm not very good but other people seem to like it. I've been published in Spectrum and stuff if that means anything to you.

Hey its you can I ask what work you are getting?
>>
>>2664363
really good advice anon. i found myself having that mindset of 'i have to learn not produce' for way too long and i got 0 practice making anything with the right mindset outside of 'draw 100s of this so in a year you can draw something else but similar'
>>
>>2664368
No, but the good ones often end up online, or I will want to hold on to them until I can rework them for a final or something. I'm not going to post some throwaway piece of shit either because it defeats the purpose of posting artwork to show my level.

>>2664372
Yeah thanks I won't post anything.

>>2664377
I hate to say it, but yes I think my work is several years ahead of yours at least, no offence. I would consider your work to still be beginner, while mine is probably low to mid professional.

Since with some people "too clean" could mean they want it to be more shadman-y.
>>
>>2664377
I like it. Well done.
>>
>>2664240
It's not that different. To "make it" objectively (comfort, money, respect, etc) you have to have a driving force to improve and grow that- guess what- doesn't go away when you "make it"! So you're in this great new place but you've cultivated this drive and now- whaddayaknow- you want to change and grow and move on more.

So the day to day is pretty much the same. You work, you make plans, you execute, you try to get better. Only difference is now maybe you go somewhere else to work and you have some money so you can be a bit more flexible.

Don't make some glistening pedestal out of "making it." It distracts you from the here and now you need to focus on to improve and figure your shit out. Work hard- and work on your mind and thinking too.

My making it credentials-
Studio job at 200+ employee studio. Team of 15-20 illustrators doing range of stuff from concepts to tight schematics. All subject matters. Six figure salary. Job security. Good projects. Good clients (studio did alot of consulting and hired design.) Cushy atmosphere. Realized I could just rise in the ranks here rest of my life after about a year. Knew complacency was setting in- saved up enough to live comfortably for a year and left. Freelance now. Many of the more experienced people I worked with have also left to pursue more personal things- even though they had "made it" many times over.

Good luck all.
>>
>>2664565
What type of freelance do you do, and how do you go about getting it?
>>
>>2664565
Post your work or someone who is the same level as you.
>>
>>2664567
All sorts of stuff. Last gig was concepts for a fantasy game app. Do a lot of design for real world themed attractions as carry over from old job. Most jobs I've gotten so far are from friend connections from work and school. Hard to get traction online.

>>2664571
Hmm. Difficult to do because posting someone else's work gives weird impressions. Am I saying I finish like them? Concept like them? Draw like them? Do 3d like them? I would normally just say who I am but because I mentioned my salary that's not really fair to my old co workers. Remember the image cloud on the front page of cghub? I would say "small thumbnail" level on there. Haha. That's fucking stupid.
>>
>>2664583
I mean just how good you are generally.
>>
>>2664583
>Most jobs I've gotten so far are from friend connections from work and school. Hard to get traction online.
Oh damn. I've been having trouble getting work and I think a lot of that has to do with lack of connections.

Yep. It was kind of a revelation for me. So, it's not like you "made it" and that's it. No one will give you money just because you got good and have the skills. You always have to deliver something in exchange and it's not always something that you really want or enjoy to do. So, in this sense it's really just another job.
