Just because they are small sketches, it is no excuse not to pay attention to your hatching, which unfortunately ruins them. Especially the guy on the cliff. If you had controlled yourself and kept the background white, it would have looked so much better.

A mistake people often make is that 'loosely drawn' is the same as 'letting go of control', making quick, random markings here and there to add detail or shadows without thinking of volume and line shape / line weight. But they are not the same. The goal is to be quick, but never lose control of your strokes.

Things you should look out for:

- Stay in control of your stroke along its entire length. Many of your strokes have little ' hooks' at the beginning where you lost control. They look clumsy and break the flow.
- Control the pressure you exert. Some of your hatching lines do not fade nicely, but have an even thickness because of even pressure along the entire stroke. This doesn't look good.
- Keep a loose wrist, or exercise drawing curves. You should be able to draw a group of parallel, curved lines with even spacing and pressure. I can see many lines that just do not match and therefore break the volume / shape you try to create.
- Try to avoid cross-hatching if it is not supporting the style of your drawing or the material you try to render. In some places on the girl and the guy on the cliff you crosshatch. It breaks the volume and
- Try to be consistent with why you hatch. Do you add hatching to suggest volume or shadow or both? When I look at the girl, most of the hatching is curved, to suggest the volume of her thighs, shoulder, calves. But her right fore-arm is hatched with straight lines to suggest shade. It doesn't fit so well. If a little bit of a curve had been added, to suggest the roundness of the arm, it would have fit better.

Not the same anon that posted originally, but I can see a difference. The image looks much cleaner and reads easier as well. The sword curves a bit wonky, but the forms seem much clearer and the control of your hatching makes the contours of them also more readily apparent.

I'm not certain I have knowledge beyond this so I won't throw in my 2 cents and give you poor advice, all I will say is stay mindful light sources and shadow strength while hatching.
>>
>>2659814

Looks much better. Just try to find the balance between controlled strokes and looseness. It will be easier the more you draw.

A final tip. You draw pretty strong outlines around everything, and that's really not necessary. It makes your drawings more forced and flat. In areas that would be bright, or have the overall shape already suggested by interior details / hatching, it is no problem to leave them open. It will create a more dynamic and suggestive whole.

Are you going to make a new thread for every "style" you do?
>>
>>2658584

The hatching in these two don't follow the forms all that well so you end up flattening your figures, which is a shame, really.

>>2659814
This one is a huge improvement from the other two. The hatching is much cleaner, clearer, and follows the form giving it a nice shape as opposed to being detrimental to the piece.

>>
>>2658590
People keep saying this whenever someone makes their own thread.

if you're going to make more than 3 posts and want feedback on multiple pieces of art or an entire portfolio then that's a perfectly fine reason to make your own thread. Do you honestly want 20 image posts from the same person in the draw thread? That's way more obnoxious.
If it was an entire thread for 1 or 2 images then sure, telling them to post in the draw thread makes sense. Otherwise no.

Whats wrong with cross hatching? The more dense the hatching is, the darker the area is.

I think hatching is more about instinct than a method.

There is nothing wrong with crosshatching. I actually wrote

> Try to avoid cross-hatching if it is not supporting the style of your drawing or the material you try to render.

So, when looking at the first 3 images,
- OP used mostly regular hatching, and cross-hatching in a few spots only.
- Those areas that have cross-hatching seem randomly chosen. Looking at the huntress body, where the crosshatching doesn't support the shape/volume of her body, and where there are actually darker areas without cross-hatching.

There is definitely a method to cross-hatching. Just look at other works by Frank Cho, or Frazetta, or Paolo Serpieri (which looks like a major inspiration for Cho), or Bernie Wrightson or Virgil Finlay. They all have their own style, but they all use hatching and cross-hatching conciously, adding volume and making the drawing more dynamic. When they were making an area darker, I'm sure they were considering direction, weight and curve of the lines they were adding.

You should grab a small brush to do these, and either a smaller dip nib or work larger. You're definitely doing a lot better than you were at the start of the thread, but your lines are still really thick and lacking in any sort of subtlety, everything is just pure dark black. You don't have the variation in tone or the subtle washes that Frazetta has in the shadows, like in >>2674720 so by comparison any plane changes end up looking a lot more sudden in yours.

Looks pretty good, though, without source, I can't really say if it is a precise likeness or not, but it looks like.

- The ear looks unrealistic. It lacks definition, i.e. the shape and details are unclear. It would not be a problem in a rougher sketch, but you paid attention to other details, so it feels at odds in this case.
- Compared to the head, the collar looks poorly done. Like a rush job. It lacks refinement and looks flat. You've tried to hide/avoid strong outlines in the head but they are strongly present in the collar, making it more of a cartoon drawing than a realistic sketch, which clashes with the rest of the drawing. Try to avoid that by suggesting volume with shapes instead of lines (you added a darker background which you could have used to suggest the outline of the collar).
- The left side of the neck (from our point of view) does not have a nice volume. It does not suggest a round neck with a collar curved around it. The strong diagonal line of the collar is not helping.
- I have the feeling there is more contrast in this drawing than in the source picture. Unless you are drawing someone in direct sunlight, there is no need to use such strong shadows. Try to use contrast as a tool, to draw the attention of the viewer to the important parts, like the eyes, or in case of a full figure drawing, the shape and volume of the human form (or part thereof).
- Additionally, if every part of the drawing has the same amount of contrast, every material will start to look the same. Be it stone, human skin or linnen. Besides texture, different materials absorb and reflect light differently. Try to incorporate that in your drawing, to make it visually richer.
>>

You really need to rethink those breasts on catwoman and black canary(?).

I get what you're going for, but you pushed it too far, especially on catwoman. It gives the impression their ribcages are deformed.

Also, is this digital or trad?

yeah focus on softer curves, showing that people arent just pure muscle they have fat too and use less lineart because three stripes like that almost looks hairy. so you dont need to go full manga you just need to clean up and go over the body shapes in more stereotypical fashion.

also try adding more detail into environment, not just short distance objects but scenery as well, it makes the picture feel less flat IMO

I disagree. Depends what you want to do but, straights are usually more interesting than curves. The figure is full of curves, you have to fight for every straight you want to get.

Please say yes.
>>
>>2730084

I'd say it is both.
It is the contrast/interplay between straight lines and curves that create interest.

If you decide to use only curves or straight lines, that would be a more stylistic choice, in which case you should look for a different way to add interest, for example line weight.

Even at a small amount anxiety can hold you back in art, since it'll make you want to finish something faster instead of taking your time to make it right.
I'm guessing it because of your inking, it looks like it starts well and then is rushed at some point.

There is one big point to be made - crosshatching. What makes crosshatching so awesome is that it can both imply shadow AND reinforce the form.
To quote Michael Hampton - Never, ever use line to go against the volume created by your form.

I don't get this meme.
Is it supposed to be a guy's strawmen/personal grudge against Frank Frazetta or someone trying to replicate Frazetta? I don't know how many times I've seen threads start with the amazon girl pic.

I can get MercWIP in a way, since there's an overabundance of "professional art" that follows the trend of mixing military warfare stuff with sci-fi akin to Gears of War on sites like DeviantArt and some corners of tumblr; but I have no idea about this meme.

meet Comics Jenny
her power is any comic she touches she gains the powers and abilities of any one character in the comic, and can only use each comic once. Can be good, can be bad, touch a Superman comic... might get Kryptonian powers, might get reporter powers from Lois Lane. :/ always a gamble.

how this works for me is everyday i go the the random power generator and create a persona based on the role. No re-rolls unless its one that has been done already... lets see what happens.
