If done correctly, anime is the polar opposite of symbol drawing, because it requires you to understand the facial structure and depict the surface of the face without drawing every little detail. This is a significant amount of the appeal of anime.

Also, why do I have to compare it to something? If I say someone or something is ugly, why does it have to be ugly compared to something else? You're just asking because you want to derail the conversation by attacking whatever it is you think I like, regardless of what I post. Stick to the topic.

You say it's not ugly because it's a matter of taste, and asked me to post examples of what I like. All you have to do is take a look at current anime and compare it's mainstream styles to the ones in the past. It's a fact. Anime now is a lot less defined. There is less structure to the faces making them all look flat and melted. But this also makes them easier to animate. Moe's rise in popularity killed any personality mainstream anime styles used to have. Now trash like pic related is the industry standard. That's the literal truth, or at least a significant part of it. Anime in general has become much more simplified in order to make it look smoother, and to make it cheaper to animate. Shading has been simplified, lineweight is rarely something animators care about and there are generally fewer details. Back in the day, anime was often described as detailed cartoons with poor animation.
