I've heard that before you start drawing more subtle casual poses, it's best to practice extreme/dramatic ones. Can anyone vouch for this?
>>
>>2656987
Well it helps to prevent you from drawing symmetrical stiff poses, but you as long as you prevent yourself from doing just that, you should have no problem doing casual poses.
>>
>>2656987

What's your goal?

A relatively stiff pose where you can see everything is handy if you're practicing anatomy/proportion and stuff.

If you want good gesture, a more dynamic one is better to practice with. Trying to gesture draw a stiff pose isn't going to work out well.

Likewise if you want to practice perspective and foreshortening dynamic is better.

See for yourself. [left to right]:
The face is too wide
The eyes are in the wrong position
The nose should be more upturned (lower left nostrill) and sideways
The face is too broad (missing shading from the hair suggesting the head's roundness)

Nice work for the rest. Don't worry about it, faces are the hardest thing of drawing: proportions are hard to get right, and humans are extremely well equipped at noticing 'wrong' faces.

Very nice! Blog?

Just be careful in a couple areas, like the wrist on the left you painted the structure in an odd way that doesn't fit the ref or reality. Or the foot in the ref is behind the stool so is cut off, but because you didn't paint the stool it looks like a stub foot. The facial features also look slightly misaligned in yours, and the eyes are totally flat, even if they are unfinished. The leg on our left too where it meets the pelvis/torso looks strange in yours. Overall you got the major forms down very very well, it's just some small minor forms and specifics that are a little off.

Nice blog man, your work ethic is admirable. I think your approach looks like it's on a very good track. My one suggestion is to try to fit in more creative work and painting from imagination. Gotta apply those studies!

Anyhow, you inspired me to do my own 1 hour study, ref is from the beginner thread.

I don't think it's a bad idea to render stylized artwork realistically but I'm gonna have to decline your request because I've got other stuff I have to paint

>>2662851
that's really good! love the painterly feel, especially how you did the hair. watch out for noses and ears though, otherwise looks neato.

I do mostly imagination work actually but not all of it gets posted, thanks for the suggestion though, I'll try to post more
>>
>>2662877
Thanks, yeah I gotta watch out for the features. My draftsmanship is pretty weak and unfortunately that shows in quick things like that.

I took another look through your blog and see you do actually draw from imagination a fair bit, but it's almost all just figures or heads on a blank background. I would try doing some scenes where you need to place a couple figures in an environment of some sort, maybe try to tell a small story with it, so you'd need to come up with poses and the lighting and maybe a costume with different materials and have the figures interact somehow, that type of thing. Like I'm not sure what your end goal is, if you want to be an illustrator or concept artist or fine artist or what...but regardless I think it is good to try expanding out past just the nude figure and portraits. When it comes to commercial work, you are pretty much never going to be asked to paint a nude figure, you always have them in some sort of clothing or armour.

You seem to have a very good grasp of form and values, but I don't see you able to handle a full scene or environment. The only time I see you try it is in that one with the elf girl kneeling in the grass next to a mushroom, and it is noticeably much much weaker than the rest of your work. I'm probably a bit biased since I look at a lot of old illustrators and Mullins. In any case, maybe try it out, it will certainly challenge you and cause a lot of growth I think.
>>
>>2662897
I agree 100% - but the reason I keep doing figures and heads in perspective is mainly because I don't consider them good enough construction-wise to move on to something else. the reason I did that elf girl was to see what I would struggle with when tackling a full illustration and painting her was the main thing that I had a hard time with, so much so that I didn't even try rendering the environment, or finishing the thing in general. so yeah, I definitely gotta try doing some of the stuff you said, but being able to paint a nude figure is my priority atm. most illustrators like the ones you mentioned go through academic training which involves basically a ton of life and cast drawing, I'm trying to get the equivalent of that while staying at home. thanks a lot for your feedback, took note of the stuff you said. don't hesitate to message me on tumblr if you wanna keep in touch, you seem like a cool dude
>>
>>2662877
if you can render anime the way you render figures pretty sure more people will give you notes
>>
>>2662927
Cool, I can respect that you want to do it thoroughly and in order like that. There's several different ideas on how to best learn, and that's one that's difficult to follow through with but can produce great results since it builds a solid foundation.

That said, I think there is value in jumping around a little bit. If you can do the perfect figure but nothing else, then when you try to learn illustration you will fumble really really hard. But if you do a bit of illustration type stuff from the start then all your skills will grow at similar rates, and as you practice different types of things they will complement each other and help you grow in each other area as well. Or at least that is my feeling on it. Figures are such a tiny sliver of all there is in art that it's almost dangerous imo to focus only on them, it would almost like doing only bench press when you want to be an athlete. At the very least I would try to paint some backgrounds for them to get comfortable with relating the figure to a value behind them and having the figure standing or sitting on a proper ground plane and seeing where you want the figure to get lost in the bg or pop out from it and stuff, having the lighting on the figure be influenced by the enviro etc.

Last little point, those illustrators didn't learn like that, that was more in the academies before it, but those methods imo are not well suited for today. Harvey Dunn (student of Howard Pyle, teacher of Dean Cornwell) would get his students to do the following 3 month program of 12 hours painting every day:
-landscape painting before breakfast
-at 8 am do a still life
-afternoon outdoor figure painting
-then a quick sunset painting
-at night either an outdoor moonlight study, or indoors composition invention

I don't use tumblr really, I haven't posted to my tumblr in like a year so it's basically been abandoned for ages and I never log on either. If you wanna chat or whatever I prefer email: [email protected]
>>
>>2662966
oh man, I already follow you, and I'm a huge fan of your work, seriously awesome stuff. about the masters thing, I'm sure a lot of them were trained in different ways, and Mullins has some great pencils in his gallery that I think are from his artcenter years, but I'm sure that you know more than me on the subject so I won't try to argue, though I will say that at the moment I'm more interested in character design than anything else. But I'll take your word for it and try to expand my horizons, been doing still lives for a while and materials and clothing are next on my list, guess I'll force myself to be more flexible. on example I've been following has been Igor Sid, who basically only painted nudes for a long time, or Ayran Oberto who only does portraits.

btw thanks a lot for the advice, I really appreciate it, and keep it up man, your work is amazing
>>
>>2662988
Ah thanks, I'm always a bit embarrassed when people like my work since I hate pretty much everything I paint. Don't let any of that stop you from emailing me though, if you ever want to chat or have any questions or anything feel free to contact me.

Ayran and Igor are both fantastic artists so following their footsteps is certainly not a bad idea.

If you want to do character design then I would start studying design and materials and coming up with your own characters too right away. Your figures are more than solid enough for that, and learning design and building a visual library is something that takes years. You can always continue working on figures at the same time.

Might not be the correct thread for the question but

Is there like a book/chart/catalog or something that shows pictures of people of different races?
I just need the faces, front and side view
>>
>>2663960
Is this a cosplay of someone in particular? Or just a schoolgirl uniform with a katana?

There was that project that used some software to figure out average faces, and they did a series of them based on country. I think they also had the base files there before they were averaged that you can view. Do some googling for it ("average faces by country" or something) and I'm sure you can find it.

Otherwise using actors is a good idea. If you know of a specific actor who is of a certain ethnicity you want to study you are bound to find hundreds of photos of them from every angle and lighting situation.

Why does America get separate spots for their black and white people yet every other place that also has different races simply have them all merged in? Seems like a desperate attempt to not have the "average american" face be brown when literally no other place that does have significant racial diversity gets this privilege.
>>
>>2665553
Because those pictures are about ethnicities. "German" is an ethnicity. "Irish" is an ethnicity. "American" is not an ethnicity, however, "Black American" and "White American" are ethnicities. Why do Europeans ask stupid questions?

Other than the various boards here, do you guys have any sites/blogs to be used for reference?

Talking specifically for objects and animals. For example websites/blogs with photos of cars, mechanical stuff, animals, nature, etc.

I use these two to draw people and want to find out as many different resources for any kinda objects.

This is kind of interesting to see, but when would you ever want to use this type of thing in a painting?

The steroid abuse though has messed up some of the forms like blown the fuck out of the lats and messed up his gut, then he has cut an unhealthy amount of fat and water so that he looks fucking shrinkwrapped. You would never use that in a painting. Something like the guys who compete in strongmen competitions are more appropriate for exaggerated bodies that are at least functional.
