Yeah, it's an ad for a double splash page. It's example illustrastion, but it's mostly an excuse for me to draw dinosaurs. A design company asked for more "product like examples" so that's what i'm doing.

It's pretty rad dude.
However, for an ad, the text seem a bit too discrete, and there's a second major problem: the binding. You sould take in consideration that the binding might eat part of the center of the illustration. sometimes it minimal, sometimes it's a fucking lot. Solution: move the center of interest away from the center (thirds are your friend). In your case, it might be that the dino head would be eaten by the binding. Not great...

It's good pratice to shrink down your work, or squint at it briefly to get an idea of how the darks and lights relate to one another in the compotition. nice shapes, but your image is basically a bright face in the middle of lots of dark tones.

When i get off work, I can play with options myself, but just looking at it, you probably need to move that pterodactyl to the right page, and flip it so its facing the center, then nix the brontosaurus and place the text in the upper left.

Thats the best makeshift option I can see that doesnt involve starting the comp over and planning in your text from the get go (which you should have done)

Hello /ic I'm new to drawing and just completed my very first actual drawing ever. Before this I usually did cartoon faces occasionally during high school but that was the furthest I got.

I tried using a wireframe body (as recommended by http://www.wikihow.com/Draw-a-Body) but found that it would make the forearms and shins look disproportionately skinny or unrealistically fat. Do you guys use wireframe or have a different method for outlining your bodies and faces?

Also, how did I do? This is the first drawing I've ever done that was an attempt at a "realistic" face and I've never attempted to draw a body before so I'd appreciate if you guys give some pointers to the newbie.
>>
>>2652626
it looks dope af from thumbnail size. even if your not trying to blend everything together, try using a smaller sized brush for the facial details, it kinda takes away from the whole thing. the hair is pretty nice tho!

any advice or criticism respect the anatomy, light or shadow? if you ask for the reference i made it without one
>>
>>2652730
>if you ask for the reference i made it without one
This is pretty obvious. It's good to practice painting without reference, but you are at a stage where you should still be using some. Maybe at this point fine a reference of a woman in a similar pose with similar lighting, and then looking at it try to fix the errors you made in this one. Pat attention to the colours, values, edges, the anatomy etc. and then implement it into your painting.
>>
>>2652730
what books did you study?
>>
>>2652730
its not that anatomically correct, but the light and shadow define the forms pretty well, nice for not using a reference, keep practicing!

>>
>>2652853
ty and yes i know there somes mistakes in the anatomy, i have the feeling but i can't see it at all.
>>
>>2652864
Okay since you want specific feedback:
-The colours are bad. You made the skin too pink, but you also made the halftones grey which gives a muddy appearance.
-Anatomy is a bit awkward. The proportions are slightly off and parts like the far arm are lumpy. The legs do not connect to the pelvis well, the shoulders are not well done. There are basically many small errors that add up.
-Bad edges. You painted all the shadows with a soft brush and turned all the forms at the same rate. Some forms need a harsher transition to shadow and others a softer one. I recommend painting with a harder brush and trying to think about the planes of the forms more. Your cast shadows can also be made sharper to distinguish them from form shadows. You also made the silhouette perfectly sharp everywhere since you used it as a base shape to fill in with a clipping mask, but it looks like she is a cutout and needs some variety in her edges.
-It looks weird to have this figure on a white background. The dark shadows imply it is indoors in a studio environment, so the background should be darker as well. If she is in a bright environment then the shadows would be influenced by that and be lighter. Basically there is not much thought about how values are affected by their environment.
-The reflected light in the shadows is not consistent. There are areas like the crotch where it is too bright, and other areas where it isn't present at all when it should be.

>>
>>2652913
You went a bit heavy on the effects. The blurs and chromatic aberration feel too harsh, and the metal hoof things look like lazy colour dodge instead of actual metal. The base and the grass are really lazily done too.

The fact you also stated how long it took in your post shows that you are too concerned with quickly pumping something out and then trying to hide that. Instead I think it would be better if you concerned yourself a bit less with the time and rather focused on getting it done properly. There's some nice qualities to your piece but they are being overshadowed by weaknesses and shortcuts.
>>
>>2652200
You need more contrast, all of your values blend together when you look at it from a distance. Add some pockets of dark and some pockets of light. Add contrast with sharp transitions from dark to light in areas such as beneath the chin and around the edges of her arms.

Try to look at your picture as a colection of clearly contrasting shapes rather than trying to highlight every curve and dimple in the same way.

I think your technique is ok in that I can see where you're going with it and you seem to be heading in the right direction even if you're not quite there yet.
>>
>>2652913
I like it. Just needs some polishing
>>
>>2652914
It would be better to just focus on traditional painting and drawing until you can afford a tablet then. Painting with a mouse is inefficient and can lead to wrist problems like carpal tunnel or tendonitis.

Also, I'm wondering what technique there could be to render the illusion of a city faitrly convincingly without spending a gazillion hour rendering each building.
Same question could apply to the waves I guess.
>>
>>2652941
Is that orange smudge by the front of the helicopter supposed to be the sun? If so, then the image should be more backlight and probably warmer since it's a sunset. Right now there's not really consistent lighting in the entire image.

>render the illusion of a city faitrly convincingly without spending a gazillion hour rendering each building
There's lots of "tricks". If you play up the atmospheric perspective on the far ones you can just detail the closer ones. You can paint windows and things in a flat on view and then skew it into perspective on each building. You can use photos.

Basically, if you're unable to draw confident, singular lines, that will only hold you back. Chicken scratch takes longer, and you're asking less of your brain essentially. Having to make bolder strokes means you have to be confident in what you know. It makes you have to learn your shiz.

A lot of people have issue with him spamming the same image over and over while making tiny changes that are hardly noticeable and while ignoring major issues in his image and ignoring advice people give him. He also seems to be stuck in a comfort zone of painting the same features on the same face from only a couple angles.

That said, he seems like a nice bloke and I hope people aren't too rude to him and scare him off. Furthermore he is just a hobbyist so I don't think should be held to the same strictness that an aspiring pro would be.

Simplify your values, there is too much variation in the top right torso. The left back is better but the edges between each value zone are too uniform and it destroys any sense of form. Bottom drawing is okay but very flat.
>>
>>2654032
noted, thank you. how do I make the edges between my value zones better/do you have any examples of this?
>>
>>2654037
If the there is a sudden transition between two planes then it looks like a sharp edge, like the edge on a cube. If the transition is a bit softer then that edge is softened, like a cube with a beveled edge. If the transition is completely soft you get something more like a soft turning of form on a sphere. Essentially a value change = a plane change...so how quickly you transition between those value shows how sudden or gradual that plane change is.
>>
>>2654053

It was just a blob of color resulting from how I got the palette, I was hesitating to keep it depending on how it should affect the lightning of the scene. Given that I would probably just remove it.

>You can paint windows and things in a flat on view and then skew it into perspective on each building.

That's a pretty good idea, thanks.

It would work really well if some light value was place on the buildings below to make it look lite up.

Honestly, looks pretty rad. Love that clean, hard linework. Looks nearly digital--the dark lines. Though the pinky on the further hand looks offputting, and because of how detailed the rest of the drawing is, her feet bother me. Particularly the further foot. Still, those lines, man. Nice whites, too.
>>

Cool, might colour pick the version you post and overlay the colour.

I can't figure out the perspective issues with the pathway but yeah something is definatly off with it :/

I've made some tweaks. I can't be bothered to make all the changes, just some. Also, maybe I'm wrong on some of this, I'm drunk, sorry.

First off, the tower peak is so very close to the center, go ahead and make the exact center to complete that triangle composition. I added some atmo. perspective and surrounded it by light clouds so its silhouette stands out. I also made sure to push all the dark clouds to the outside to frame the whole thing.

As for the road: it's more engaging if the viewer is closer to the perspective of the subject. I would nix the moon and have the dominant light source come from the top of the tower. I would REALLY simplify the city/geometric shapes you have on the bottom - so the focus is on the tower and your eyes are drawn toward it.

As for the floating hunks of land, either have them distributed evenly throughout the space, or only on the bottom.(I've nixed the one you had up top).

I'm a fan of there being a local light source close to the subject, but I don't think it should be a street lamp. You have this awesome, FFVII, medieval, fantasy-esque tower - then a paved road and a street light. It doesn't mesh well to me. Make the light source something more interesting and magical.

For the construction of the castle - anytime you have a circular platform, go ahead and draw you out a ellipse with your ellipse tool or ellipse marquee tool to use as a guide. Your ellipses are god awful. I'm sure you know there's plenty to improve as far as perspective, but there's a start. The ellipse guides are to be used for the tops of pillars as well.

Sorry for the tl;dr - hope this helps.
P.S, i know it's a WIP
>>
>>2654574
Also, I made that pathway pretty boring and uniform, which is unnatural, so use your judgement on the actual design of it, if you decide to listen to me
>>
>>2654574

>>
>>2654574
Man I can't seem to write a concise thought or shut up - but one last thing

the reason I chose a winding road is because the bottom half of your painting is boring as shit when compared to the top half. I may not have found the answer, but something needs to be done to add visual interest to the bottom.

The buildings in the bottom right were supposed to be eye candy but they were axed for the persepctive to work

>>2654588
>i don't feel like the winding road works. hides the grand size of the structure, which i thought looked great.

Yeah the graniosity is a main part is emphasising how far away it is in the sky
>>
>>2654588
I agree, my winding road, hastily done, doesn't seem to push the building into the distance as much as it should. That can be solved by making it much thinner in the far end, and placing the proper values. A winding road isn't needed, but a road that comes almost directly at the viewer is a mistake I believe.
>>
>>2654590
I'm all for eye-candy. I really like the idea and it adds to the concept, but it needs to be done correctly

Youd go far if you read this >>2645782 and the rest of the images in the animation thread. Take notes when you get to the tone section and the thumbnail section. Actually just read all of it thoroughly.

2 things that dont read immediately that you want to read:
the cast shadow of the figure
the stationary bike

You can solve this by grouping all the areas in the light (and the cast shadows caused by it), let the silhouette show clearly. If your subject is in the shadow, blow out the light value range, so you have a larger shadow range... hm i cant explain it v.well
>>2645805 example, house on the right. You have focus in shadow, so you can use more values (you can see the side door and window), but your values in light are limited (compare front doors). You should apply this to your painting.
>>
>>2654261
neat
>>
>>2654790
Also is that table at the back purposely rotated? You can simplify all that shit you know, stick to a 1vp perspective and add perpendicular surfaces (complements 1vp perspective). If youre gonna add forms that don't conform to 1 vp, make them not take up a large proportion of your image.

Its probably your intention to make it very cluttered right? You can probably make a circular arrangement around the bike from the boxes and props. Play with the boxes/arrangements so it converges to your focal points... anon this is really basic shit. I cant believe im posting this. Did you make thumbnails at all?

Improvement. More. Midtones. Especially in the lower half. If i adnt been following your progress from the sketch stage i would have a hard time deciphering the bike. Differentiate the bottom of the bike from the floor and the pedal from the bike more, value-wise.

I am a naturally skilled drawer and sculpter. In fact, in the 3rd grade i was able to accuratly draw a womans or mans figure at just about any position just like you are doing now. But not the same way. I was able to pic up a pencil and from memory just draw. I'm not bashing you techniques at drawing, but I have never understood why people need to use underlining to draw simple stuff. I was always able to draw what I see just how I see it, shading aswell. My technique is to look at what u want to draw, and imagine it 2D or flat, then draw it as you see it, also for shading, just add shadows and dark areas just how you see it. And then once you draw it once, u can draw it anytime without n

the reason its a bit more cartoony is cause i did the drawing for it in paint. so all of the proportions are a little pushed out or in cause the measurement lines were thicker. this is the most successful i've been doing it this way usually i do a pencil drawing and follow it really strictly but it'd be nice to be able to skip that and go straight to painting.

Use a reference if you can't completely understand what you intend to do or how to do it

People here all about dat dere figure lineart drawing but once you actually get an interest in color, clothing and design having a vast visual library is a must, and an advantage

Or simply if it ever comes to the point where you know something is wrong from your imaginative drawing and don't know what, compare it and fix it accordingly

Diggin those hands man. What type of charcoal do you use? Honest question: are they from photos or do you disfigure yourself like someone with cerebral palsy to draw those from your live hand?

Picking at this. Trying to make it not so boring. Something is off about his far eye.

those are from months ago. i dont really post the hands i draw on here anymore i do about 4 pages a day and at this point they just look like hands so any crit would be "yup thats a hand".

its just too fun to stop. i do them in 8B pencil mostly. exercises my imagination and helps with my observational skills. id recommend it to everyone who wants to do fine arts.

To start working the rust off after being in the hospital for over a year I decided to do some random requests and... yep

I'm really looking to correct any mistakes now while it's easy, for my own growth and the satisfaction of my receiver. Can I get any pointers on how this pose could be better or needs to be fixed... concerning matters of anatomy and perspective mainly. As for matters of taste, well, I think it's perfectly OK if a consenting adult wants to look at a picture of a robot with a flashlight giving a man a hug with their long, flexible, robo-arms, and that stance probably isn't budging.

The bra-looking thing is a referenced blindfold that won't look so vague post-sketch, the bot isn't actually the squid thing from Doc Who tho they do look similar enough, and that vibrator looking thing HAHA DIDN'T I TOTALLY IMPLY THAT'S A FLASHLIGHT? Yep, no robo vibro tentacle art here. That would be nsfw.

I'm going to shorten/reposition the human's right arm, I just spotted that.

It's a little hard to tell how much would be final in this drawing, but I think I can already tell, those legs seem preetttyy flat. Very chicken-scratchy, and that's telling. Try to define them a bit more. Look at the proportions of his actual leg. The tops of his legs are longer than the bottoms because you took the beginning of the pants as his crotch. Other than that, looks like a fun concept.

Anatomy on that arm is absurd- left forearm looks like it has a tumor

Should probably add a light source and try to push depth with perspective

Should avoid draw a perfect profile of a face, it flattens the drawing
