Let's get another art progress thread going.

Gross.
>>
>>2642772

I like the 2015 one better
>>
>>2642772
Yea, I hate to say it, but I find the 2015 ones better senpai
>>
>>2642772
While 2016 image is more rendered, the 2015 ones have superior gesture, which makes them overall better.
>>
>>2642772
Yeah 2015 ones are better.

Better shapes.
>>
>>2642772
Anyone else prefer the 2015 version?
>>
>>2642772
this may seem like a strange opinion but does anyone else think the 2015 one is better?
>>
>>2642772
Okay I was gonna say all these guys were trolling but then I realized that the top one is 2016
im gonna have to agree 2015 is better
>>
I have to say something I never wanted to say ever bvut I like the 2015 version better.
>>
>>2642772
I thought the top one was older.

2015 is way superior
>>
Nice bait, OP.
>>
>>2642772
>Art Regress
>>
>>2642772
]: Dude I don't know if it was because of how you set it up, but I thought 2015 was better. There's actually hardly any difference, but 2015 is clearer and the build of the character's is much better, the gesture is more natural.
>>
>>2642772
wow, the regression...
>>
Holy fuck, I've never seen samefagging this hard.
>>
>>2643712
The thread has 16 replies and 17 posters...it's not samefagging. It's probably just a troll thread anyhow where the dates are switched since 2015 is clearly better.
>>
>>2643723
>da website clearly says that there's 17 posters!!!!!!! there's no possible way that they can still samefag!!!!
>>
>>2643729
Yea, because a bunch of anons would go through the effort of ip jumping to tell Op what is clearly there
>>
>>2642772
You somehow degradated?
Your sense of form, design and even values minus the blending rendering itslef got worse.

No, no excuses, I recognize that wonkiness in feet and hands, it's literally

problem

Sit down and start drawing them hands and feet from all angles in all sorts of finger bending ways, for a month or something.
>>
2015 is better senpai, the top ones have wierd stilted gestures and the color design is a lot less aesthetic than the values of the bottom.

First one is pretty good for 2004. In a weird way it kind of captures the zeitgeist of that era.
>>
>>2649361
This. They kinda sucked at rendering and values and shit, but they had a very solid base already. That lineart and and comp are quite good for a "beginner."

It's no wonder their later stuff took such a leap. They already had a good lifetime of drawing from imagination and stuff.
>>
>>2649354
what're they like in 2016

>>
>>2649390
this looks like maybe 1 month of progress...
>>
>>2642772
You got worse. Your rendering is cleaner but the designs have lost character, it's way too dark I can't see any of the details, the use of gimmicky effects is really distracting like the way you've done the shadows and the glaring lights. The pose looks like they're trying to piss out of their guns and their legs look very flimsy

>>2649230
You also got worse, the feet in the first image look really nice but in the second image it looks like you traced them from the sketch without really caring, your hands got worse, the clothing has lost texture, the hair looks like it's floating in space

>>2649317
You've made great progress your values and edge control are nice but be careful with all that composition it's looks like fengzhu, not every landscape has to be perfectly constructed to fit the camera and focus on the subject matter, sometimes a poor composition in some aspects can make the image more realistic

>>2649354
You've gotten better at all technical aspects of art but you've neglected character. the first and second images characters look really interesting and memorable like they have a personality and story and you want to know more about them but the third image is just a girl with a gun, you don't care who's shooting at her, what she does or anything

>>2649390
You spent so much time smoking weed instead of focusing on improving that you've made only a few months worth of progress in 5 years. No need to feel upset you can't undo the past just focus on making the most out of the future, go study

EQG 1 was just bad and boring, (not to mention shit looking, since they had to do it from the ground up, like the animation errors on S1)
2 was meh. I forgot about it after 5 minutes.
3 Was probably the best, that is in the beginning, it started strong but lose steam with the running time, and just became worse and more boring than 2. It had the best song of the entire franchise tho ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dzSwC9HkNxI ).

>>
>>2650286
Then you'll evolve faster than those who practiced much less. Plenty of people have "drawn their whole lives" and by that they mean they picked up a pencil once in a while and doodled shit.

You can also cook your own meals your whole life and never improve too if you don't make the effort.

You can stand far above many other artists just by practicing at all.

>>
>>2650692
No, he's fairly right dude. Look at the pose on the last one, the silhouette. It's just the fucking Charlies Angel pose with a larger gun. Her face looks like she's ready for someone to take her picture. the first one has emotion, a great silhouette. Look at the drawings and the details: you can create a story by looking at them. Even the 2nd one has a strange mix of scifi and fantasy; kinda reminds me of DMC. Sadly the last one does not have much of a story other than... i guess she's being shot at and has stuff falling in the background? She's got some things on her wrists? Despite all the movement in the background she looks completely still, with no wind, while reloading a bullpup rifle. The magazine being reloaded is wider than the open pouch on her side.

tl;dr

Those are book covers (the ones from 2007 and 2009) so he didn't paint girls with large guns out of his personal preference, he just did what the publisher asked him to do.

So dont hate on his ideas..

Also your values are all pretty low, you need a bit more contrast to make your images pop.

I know its been echoed a lot here, but you should try photo realism before developing an animu style. I won't claim to be any good, but when I tried this approach to faces, after just a few weeks I found I could draw faces of all styles better.

Its all a matter of understanding what forms you're simplifying with the style.

drawing hasn't felt as magical recently, and I've been aimlessly practicing without a clear goal.

I envy him.

I have so many days of "I don't know what to draw, I don't feel like anything, I guess I'll just study" and it usually leads to forced crap. I'd love to have a subject matter I enjoy to the point I could do it for nearly a decade and not get bored of it.

Slowed down a lot in 2016 once I'd gotten over the initial hurdle and didn't practice as deliberately. Dose plateau feels.

My imagination stuff is still mostly trash tier though, and I've had the problem that I tend not to spend longer than 1 or 2 hours on any given project.

It's not real. These people find a technique and exploit it. After repeatedly doing it they get gud at that technique. But the reality is they have limited themselves to only doing that technique well enough.

literally everyone slows down after about 3-5 years. it becomes exponentially harder to improve your art the better you get.

What do you mean when you say "one technique"? Are you suggesting all artists should use every possible medium? Or that specialising in an area of interest / aesthetic one enjoys is the wrong way to approach it? Can you give me a few examples of what "techniques" the artists that prove your point use?

Your "point" is so vague that literally any example could "prove it", provide some criteria, give us a metric.

imho the biggest problem with people not improving in art is the general lack of objective.

For most of us, we don't draw with the explicit intent of getting better at drawing. We wanted to draw something and we did, whether we're happy or not with the result doesn't matter and acquiring experience or skill is just a logical side-effect.

I'm pretty sure that anybody here who has a few months of drawing even at leisure knows that one thing or other any artist must do to improve. Be it drawing from real life, studying perspective, drawing hands or feet over and over, analyzing another artist's work, or even watching some China guy babble on Youtube.

The difference we see in these "art progress" threads is that the people who improved vastly through the years had the objective of getting improving in sight and those who did not had other things in mind.

Personally, I think you can draw 8 hours a day for a thousand years and your sonic drawings will still look like shit if you focused only in what you wanted to draw and never what you wanted the finished drawing to look like.

I'd agree with this. To elaborate though even "git gud" or "get a job in the industry" isn't a strong enough goal on its own. You need clear, measurable goals.

It helps a lot to set monthly goals that contribute towards your big end goal. If you want to git gud, identify your weak points and at the beginning of each month set an objective, like "15 hours of perspective studies" or "read 3 books on perspective". This sort of stuff gives you something concrete to work on and a sense of achievement when you reach it, whereas "become a good artist" is nebulous and your idea of what a good artist is (and what standards you hold yourself to) is probably going to change as you go. God knows I aspired to emulate some pretty mediocre artists when I started, because I didn't have any eye for quality.
>>
>>2681040
>15 hours of perspective studies
Even this is way too vague. I mean it is something you can do, but you need a concrete goal, what is going to be the use of those 15 hours of perspective study?
I'm thinking something along the lines of "being able to create an image in three point perspective with multiple boxes at different angles, overlapping" or "create an image of a busy marketplace from bird's view with primary focus on correct perspective".
Then you have something you can actually check on, an application.
Study with a specific goal like this in mind, so you know which information to prioritize or else all is just noise.
Or you know, whatever, I don't even know.
>>
>>2681056

I don't disagree that you can narrow the criteria for a goal further. Different people will probably have different levels of specificity they're comfortable with.

I set monthly goals that are flexible but relatively concrete - I know what constitutes practicing perspective and I know for sure when I've done 15 hours of it (as long as I keep track). What to do within that criteria I can choose day to day depending on how I feel.

Day by day I might set goals like your example, a specific project to work on that hones perspective skills.

My theory (well it's not "my" theory, I've picked it up from elsewhere) is that productivity is all about setting up concrete goals and then breaking those goals down into measurable objectives. Both my example and your example are measurable, but yours is more specific, which can be good for a short term but maybe a bit restrictive for a month's worth of application (IE a month of bird's eye view practice). Having a big, overarching goal that's a bit more vague (like "make it") is fine as long as you don't leave it there.
