Something's broken, what do I do?

What do we draw?

>Whatever you want. At this point there's no required topic so draw your heart out. Make sure you submit at least a half hour of work or you may get a low effort warning.

What's a low effort warning?

>The goal is to get people to draw every day by turning it into a competition. The low effort warning system is to prevent people from posting last minute, quick sketches when they're feeling lazy. If you receive a warning and it happens again within a month you'll be eliminated.

>This rule has been the cause of a lot of concern amongst newer artists so let me reiterate: this system is to police low effort content and has nothing to do with the quality of the work. New artists are more than welcome.

What happens if I'm eliminated?

>A new Last Artist Standing challenge starts every week. If you get eliminated then get it together and rejoin next week.

How can there be a new Last Artist Standing challenge every week?

>This is a way to let new artists join in and to allow re-entry for the eliminated. Every week a new challenge is started. If you joined on week 1 and make it to week 2 then your daily submission counts for both the first and second Last Artist Standing. If you get eliminated then you're eliminated from both challenges and you'll be able to rejoin next week.

Will I have an advantage if I join later in the week?

>The winner of a Last Artist Standing will be the artist with the longest streak. If you join on day 1 and last until day 85 then you'll have a streak of 85. If there's only one person left in the challenge when you're eliminated but they joined on Day 7 then they'll need to continue on for another week. If they're eliminated before then, you win.

Yeah, LAS' general concept is good, it can still be good, there's a lot that can and should be developed. One of the greatest fundamental flaws with LAS' current system is its inability to retain newcomers.
Most newcomers don't have a reason to stay so we keep seeing a high turnover in the newer weeks. LAS in its current state caters significantly towards week 1 and possibly the single digit weeks, which means its lifespan is essentially tied at the hip with week 1's lifespan. If it continues then LAS will all be dead by the time Week 1 is over, when it should be entirely possible to have a system that allows LAS to continue indefinitely with a healthy population.
We've discussed a couple of solutions (like seasons and a ladder system), the idea being to give some sort of incentive to newcomers to stay. Lava has planned to implement a Leaderboard system which would help mitigate this problem by allowing newcomers in later weeks to climb above lazy users in earlier weeks but with development at a complete standstill we can only wait and watch as LAS shrinks like a slow dying candle.

Blaming the community gets us no where, you can't stop the people you don't like from doing what you don't like outside of LAS. Altering the site is possible, but without fixing what can be fixed things will continue as they are, the fundamental issues with LAS' system will never be addressed, and we'll continue to see a decline in LAS' numbers until the only people left are those that never needed the site in the first place.

That's probably all you'll need in terms of basic perspective knowledge. Marshal vandruff has a course on it as well that gives you a bit more info in video form. After you get the basics down you should move on to Scott robertsons how to draw book for more advanced stuff.

Look at how long the average person lasts on the Active chart. They join, draw for a few days, then either stutter to a stop or quit cleanly.

It doesn't matter how you change the site, people are lazy and inconsistent, and the only way past that is through rewarding their continued effort or by punishing those who fall, e.g. no weekwunner wants the shame of being memed or crossed off now. If you want people to stick around, there needs to be incentive and community, and if you want new people you have to go out there and spread the word about LAS.

I agree with this a lot and it is also why I think there should be a few more features. Like you said the weekoner status is a big incentive... for weekoners... thats about it ya know? Lava has said multiple times that if he were too implement additional functions that require abandoning the week system that he'd leave the currently standing weeks somehow so don't worry.
However a system that actually makes EVERYONE workhard and push themselves is better. Because as it stands, being a week oner doesnt put any reaaaaal pressure to improve, just to post everyday.
Thats why I really really really like the idea lava has proposed several times, but everytime he mentioned it seemed like someone who didnt actually understand what he was saying would sperg out and shitpost. If we had a leaderboard system that incorporated both streak ASWELL as community challenge participation it would solve a lot of problems. (1/2)

And I think the main flaw with the week system is that everyone from the previous week is automatically entered in the next week. There would be no problem if the competition was just among the week you joined, because you have a mostly equal chance. But when you're up against 15 autists who joined a year before you and refuse to die, you can't compete with that. It's like joining a race when everyone else gets a one minute head start. You might be really determined, but so is everyone else ahead of you.

Well the fundamentals challenges are exactly what I thought of when I saw his post. Personally I think THOSE would be the ones that contribute to your "rank" and the fun ones could still just be for fun. There would be two kinds of challenges, or the "fun" ones could be voted on to determine how they contribute to rank.

I also thought of challenge abuse, which is why I think there would need to be a group of people determining the core "contributing challenges" that people can use to skill up their rank or whatever.

So anyone can make and post "fun" challenges, but the rank-adjusting challenges have to be approved by the community. That way we get a balance.

Luci here, yeah I spend about 3hrs every day (Unless I'm away from home) yesterday I spent 5. I always do about 20+ min of gestures but I rarely scan them because I don't have time to scan that much paper.

I agree with these. I feel I don't really deserve a score higher than 3 and that's pushing it. I don't explore colour as much as I should and a lot of my stuff still feels static, but I'm feeling a bit more flow in some of it.
