Why is it that on some colour wheels blue is the opposite of red but on others the opposite of red is green?
Because red is the opposite of green, and the other is wrong

Isn't the opposite of red just cyan which is why people are confused if it's green or blue? I don't think the CMYK palette is necessary or practical when painting, but if you really want to be 'correct' about complimentaries and color mixing in a technical sense, the CMYK color wheel is what you want,
