Recently bought pic related.

It comes with a stick of compressed charcoal, which I've never used before. And I find it feels extremely scratchy when drawing, is this the norm for compressed charcoal or likely just a trait of the brand? What about natural charcoal?

It also has a stick of oil-based sanguine. The brand also offers 'dry' sanguine separately, and I'm wondering what the difference would be. With the oil version I currently have, it can't really be drawn over, would the dry differ?
>>
>>2623657
The oil base behaves more like a color pencil, and the chalk is more like pastel. I have their oil-base in pencil form and while it's good when you don't want any smearing or transfer, it's not like traditional sanguine at all. Just buy some Conté pencils instead.

Workflow related.

What are some efficient ways to save/document study/sketch/doodle files in photoshop? Mainly photoshop, but if you have other programs in mind, please share.

The past 3-4 years I've been saving as PSDs and they take a lot of HDDspace. Also I don't think a sketch warrants saving a file as PSD. I don't spend a lot of time learning about the program, when I really just want to draw in it. It's just fucking annoying i gotta find out png or jpg gif tiff pdf, save as, save, save for web and all that bullshit.

Also is there a way to just save without needing to choose the file type each time? I ALSO really just want to save it with as a timestamp since I go through so many documents and have to close the program.

I posted before about my art being sold against my will and want advice on what to do next. The company paid what they owed but didn't remove the art and are still selling it. Asking them to remove it hasn't worked.

I haven't mentioned legal action to them, because the amount they're making is almost zero. Should I mention it anyway? Or should I send a copyright claim to...someone? What are the options? I have no idea how this works, but it bothers me that the artwork is up even if it's not selling much, because I trusted them.

Can I use watercolors over it or not? What's this waterproof but not waterproof bullshit? If not are there any nib pens like this that are literally waterproof?
>>
>>2624066
Just buy a nib pen and India ink or noodlers bulletproof black ink. It actually works out as a cheaper investment, because copic pens run out SUPER fast. A bottle of ink takes a lot longer to use up and is guaranteed to not bleed.
>>
>>2624098
India ink bleeds a lot though. Unless you can get a specific kind. I have a bottle of good ink and a nib pen but i'd like one I could use more conveniently too for quick work.
>>
Dr Ph Martin's black star ink is waterproof. India ink can run. Sumi-E ink will 100% pull when wet. But really the best way to go is is paint and then ink.
>>
>>2624066

Water resistant =/= water proof.
Running over water resistant ink with watercolour paint will likely fray the line of the ink, without effecting the paint very much like a non-resistant ink would.

Water PROOF is definitely what you want if you intend to paint over it and maintain clean lines.

That said, they're pretty cheap so if you want to try, it might be with a shot. It may be that the lines will survive a wash of water, just that they won't hold up to heavier punishment if you use a lot of washes or drag the brush around too much.

Ok i think i got it.

Rim lighting looks the way it does because of the Fresnel Effect?
The plane that the rimlight hits becomes parallel with the cameras line of sight. Resulting in more light being reflected and less local color showing through.

1. Whats the best book to learn anatomy if i want more of a manga style

2. Whats a good moniter tablet that isnt $9999 wacom

3. Why is it so hard to draw figures
>>
>>2625270
>1. Whats the best book to learn anatomy if i want more of a manga style
I'm guessing by anatomy you mean how to actually just draw people.
Loomis, what he teaches in his books is how to construct figures and also make them in perspective. You can easily switch out the proportions or the basic forms as you see fit AFTER you know what you're doing and can make it look right.
>2. Whats a good moniter tablet that isnt $9999 wacom
It all depends on your budget, there is a tablet guide in the sticky but I'm sure you didn't even look at it.
You don't need a monitor tablet if you're just starting out.
Go traditional or get an Intous5 Touch Large. It's pretty good and just 300 bucks.
>3. Why is it so hard to draw figures
Because you probably haven't studied them and when you draw them you just see them as their contours instead of feeling them out in space as your draw them. Read Loomis. There is a reason people say it so much here besides the meme.
>>
>>2625279
I've read loomis already, and it was extremely useful, but how exactly do i go about practicing it? Should i be going over things mutiple times before i move ahead a page? I also want a different style from whats portrayed in the book.
>>
>>2625267
You draw a horizonline and two vanishing points within your cone of vision and then you draw lines to your vps
>>
>>2625267
There's multiple ways to do it, but off the top of my head here's how I'd do it:

>Extend your center of vision down the page
>Draw a line from the two VPs of your square down to the center of vision to a point where these two lines are at 90 degrees (you can take a 90 degree corner and move it down along the center of vision until both edges connect with the VPs)
>Once you have that point, (which is your station point), draw a line starting at that point at 45 degrees relative to the VP lines you just made (this 45 degree line should go right between both of the lines)
>take that 45 degree line up to the eye level to find your 45 degree measuring point.
>You can now reference this point to get a 45 degree angle for any objects vanishing to your current VPs.
>Take the first corner of your first square and draw a line back to this 45 degree measuring point. Now draw from another corner back to its VP. Where your 45 degree line meets the far edge of the square is where you should close it off. all squares are bisected diagonally at exactly 45 degrees

I hope that makes sense. It's difficult to explain. I'll draw a picture if it's not clear

drawing square in 2point.jpg

>>2625267
>>2625287
Here's a quick picture to help. The circled yellow point is where the 45 degree line meets the back edge of the square. it's up to you to determine how wide the square is, but the back corner of the square has to form a line with the front corner leading back to the 45 degree MP.
>>
>>2625294
It seems like the right idea,
just make sure that your pink line is at a true 45 degrees from your SP.

To me it looks like the VPs aren't the same distance from the center, but maybe I'm wrong. If you're in 1-point perspective, then that's absolutely correct. The 45 degree line would be going straight up the center of vision if both VPs are the same distance from the center

I uploaded a drawing in 2-point to clarify.
>>
>>2625303
>>2625297
That being said, my VPs are obviously a bit wonky too, so don't focus on my shitty picture too much. As long as you get the principle.
>>
>>2625303
Ignore the part about being in 1-point. It's clearly not. But if the 45 mp is at the center of vision, the two VPs should be the same distance from the center
>>
>>2625267
I don't understand what's going on and why it is difficult.

>>

What's the best way to construct a pelvis abstraction, family?

>>
I've got money to spend for art supplies, but I don't really know what is good.

If you read Scott Robertson's how to draw, you'll learn to put ellipses in perspective along walls, which is handy for Loomis' hip method. Alternatively, you read Anatomy for sculptors and copy that shit.

>>2626070
I recommend learning Proko's or Drawing Art Academy's realistic pelvis so you have a good idea of what's going on in that area and then simplify it depending on the pose.
>Top view - an ellipse of iliac crest + cylinder + plane definition
>Front view - draw a shape of panties like the person's wearing them
>Back view - back and side planes of a box
Different poses show different planes/landmarks, learning gesture drawing will help with simplification.

Nothing really special about it, just boxes and cylinders correctly placed in perspetive. What makes it look so good is the confidence - one line, one stroke. Don't get lazy when hatching. Instead of doing a bunch of squiggly lines, follow the contours of the form and the direction of the shadows, lift off your pencil and work in one direction instead of going back and forth. Yes. Blind, continuous line drawing from nature. Do it anywhere. It's pretty much impossible to truly master it, but you will dramatically improve your hand-eye coordination as a result. Being able to draw "blind" is the most important skill to have, because it forces you to make the connection between your imagination, the movements of your hand, and what you see from your eyes. You feel stupid because your drawings look bad, but it is the most important exercise, trust me.

Ok, I really need help.
What, specifically, makes woman hips so much wider than men?
Is it a specific muscle that's emphasized? Is it the extra fat that women naturally store? If so where are the main contributing ones? Is it because the pelvis is wider?

Help me bros, all my women look very weird.

Women have babies. The opening in the pelvis is much wider to accommodate that. A Wider pelvis also means the legs are far apart, which means the angle will also be different. The iliac crest is more pronounced in women, use that and the top of the femur as landmarks.

Just google that stuff, it's basic education. Well, women are just wider than men in the pubic region for birth purposes. Openings are rounder, shapes are shorter, angles are more obtuse SPECIALLY the pubic arch (although idk if that affects how the crotch looks on the surface)

Thanks bros. I was already aware of the bone structure differences. I guess what I was confused were all of the factors that went into giving a woman her "breadth"

I looked through all of my anatomy books and found this which I think answers my question.

"Because of the increased pelvic diameters, hip joints and trochanters are both spread farther apart, thus giving the female hips their characteristic breadth. The broadest level of the lower trunk is not at the trochanter level, as found in the male, but just below thr trochanters--corresponding to the gluteal fold of the buttocks. In consequence of the shorter female thorax and pelvis and the more extended interval between them, the flanks are longer. Buttocks reach to a lower level than in the male figure. The flesh around the abdomen is smoother and more rounded; and the navel is more deeply set."

Idk this might seem obvious but having it spelled out this way helps me remember it.

I have another question, though:
When looking straight on, the little part just below the illiac spine/crest...there's usually a bump indicating some muscle there. Is it the tensor fasciae latae or the gluteus medius? Because it's different in Hamptons book, Peck's book, and Bridgman's book.

If I'm understanding correctly I believe that bump is due to the femur protruding due to the sharper angle of the leg, not any of the muscles in particular.

one is the pelvis being wider than men to be able to give birth, the other one is the fat pads they got.

why do art school instructors hate digital art?

they really want me to do everything traditionally, not even for values sake, they just think that digital art is somehow cheating/not art?

but in the industry I'm going to be working digitally most of the time other than maybe sketching and thumbnails so it justs seems a little ass backwards
>>
Can someone help me to understand bounce light on boxes?
>>
>>2629024
I dont know your instructors personally so I cannot say for sure, but if you're a student using digital then suffice to say you have a lot to learn from using traditional media. There's nothing worse than badly rendered digital art, and a lot of teachers try to force it out of their students by making them use quick washes with watercolor and acrylic, or experiment with mixed media.

In short, using different media will help you learn about your chosen media. Look at the best digital artists, take Ruan Jia for example. His technique mimics traditional oil painting. Would he have his own unique mastery of digital painting if he hadn't used oils first? Probably not.
>>
>>2629060
I love learning about traditional techniques and new mediums, but most of the time my instructors just want me to do my work traditional to get the most out of my shading work?
It just saves time for me to shade digitally rather than scrub hard at the paper with a 4b pencil or something darker to get those specific tones/spend an hour blending an area when I could do it in a few minutes on multiply with a nice lavender colour.

time is sort of the essence for me right now because I'm juggling four classes plus work and it takes me about four to six hours each to finish a piece

also I like digital more than traditional because it feels safer, like if I make a mistake I can just ctrl-z and fix it, but if I make a mistake traditionally then I blew it and I'd have to start all over again
>>
>>2629076
sometimes the easiest option isn't always the best one... take a look at your instructor's personal work. If its good and you respect them, then follow their advice. If not, then make your own decision on the matter.

>if I make a mistake I can just ctrl-z and fix it, but if I make a mistake traditionally then I blew it and I'd have to start all over again

You shouldn't use digital because it feels safe, you should use it if you genuinely prefer the medium. When you're a student, you should be taking as many risks as possible. Using traditional is tough because you can't ctrl-z, but sometimes those mistakes can become happy accidents. You can learn more from them. It's a very different process, and one that yields very different results... but those results might end up surprising you or triggering a break through.
>>

Nigga the fundamentals should be your base, your solid foundation on which you build pretty things.
So no, Keys to Drawing merely scratch the surface. Go through Fun with Pencil, Drawabox.com, maybe Perspective made easy or Ctrl+paint, Scott Robertson's How to draw and many others, supply it with Vandruff's perspective, Vilppu's gesture and Hampton's anatomy while practicing boxes, ellipses, circles, straight lines and curves every single day, everywhere you go, because the stronger your foundation is, the more you can focus on design.

So how do you get through all this stuff without being overwhelmed? With your attitude. Be humble and enjoy the process, every line gets you a tiny step closer to mastery. Good luck anon, you can make it.
>>
>>2631503
Thanks for the list,Il go trough those then too
>>
>>2631524
It's not supposed to be a checklist of books to read, it's more about your mindset. The fundamentals should be studied with passion, continuously over the entire length of your career. Learn to love the process and explore all different resources you stumble upon, they'll help you form your personality and unique style as an artist.

>>2627104
that's the fringe effect ?i think ? Disable it , it's next to texture i think. Also ,that effect is good when you want to give a watercolor look to the drawing
>>
>>2631970
The tools never make the artist, but in the world of digital they can potentially break the artist. Anyone that's used a Graphire 3 back in the day will know what I'm talking about. There are some great artists that use bad equipment I can only assume, but they're not doing themselves any favors by doing so.

The biggest advantage a Cintiq style tablet has to its counterparts isn't the fact you're drawing on a screen, but its 1:1 drawing surface-to -screen ratio. Conversely the biggest disadvantage of conventional desktop style tablets is that they're cramming a 15-20 inch monitor (or more) onto a drawing surface nowhere near that size, it's a similar sensation to when you crank your computer mouse's sensitivity up.

Having a big ass tablet like any among the largest Wacom Intuos models or Huion's Giano helps alleviate that problem for the most part.

Probably a stupid question but do you think it's possible to change your style?

As of right now, my style is based on Bridgman, Leyendecker, Karl Kopinski, Steve Huston, and a few smaller known artists. And I'm not really sure if my stuff is really exactly where it needs to be.
Should I just keep looking at other artists? I'm trying to get an Iain McCaig look with a bit of Huston mixed in it. So would you think that if I just kind of "think" like those two, I can get out of this style I'm in right now? (Pic related is iain mccaig)
>>
>>2635293
I think you should leave it to your audience to decide whether your style looks anything like another. Thats kinda pretentious/boastful talking yourself up like that, especially because how close(or not) you are to another artist is not quantifiable.

ill be your audience;)
>>
>>2635167

I've actually found a pretty decent amount of stuff on pinterest and tumblr. Tumblr has a few dedicated blogs for WWII photos.
>>
>>2630705
Are you looking for print work? The art directors are usually listed and credited in magazines and newspapers. You should be able to just go to a library or something and write down all of them. It would be the same info you'd be paying for.
>>
>>2635311
>that's kindap pretentious talking yourself up like that
You're right. I didn't mean it like that. What I meant to say was that I look to those guys for answers to my drawing "questions." My stuff doesn't look like theirs, rather it is inspired. (I take a bridgman arm, a kopinski head, and render them like huston...or whatever)

Anyway back to the original question, can a style change just by looking at different artists?
>>
>>2633741
hmm I don't really know of any that actually contracts the muscles but you could totally use 3d scans I guess (new masters academy has some, if you have that already)

>>2633764
Holy shit I was tired last night, I mean that you should go the traditional route and then worry about learning digital. You can learn digital (once you feel confident enough to try painting and shit like that), you should learn from ctrl + paint how to paint.
Hope this is more clear.

>>
Is it possible to git decent at perspective without learning all the measurments stuff and use rigid traditional methods?
>>
>>2635659
nah no way, if your work is good and you have a style that fits whatever the art director has in mind they'll touch base. Its definitely worth sending a targeted portfolio for it.

Is there a good comprehensive digital painting book thats recommended? Most of the ones Ive glossed over don't seem very good, they usually focus on a single piece of software like PS or Painter and don't cover the breadth of techniques Ive seen in smaller tutorials.

Is there a way to "paint" with graphite?
I feel like having a nice value "painting" before I scan it into Photoshop is more beneficial than using mainly lines with just pencils.
>>
>>2636272
Learn how to shade properly, use watersoluble graphite, or draw with charcoal (use fixative before scanning).

Or, you know, use actual paint. If you're only doing black and white just buy a couple of tubes of gouache.

>>
>>2636593
It's just a fancy word for extreme concentration, when working on something (doesn't have to be art specifically) gets so captivating so you ignore all small distractions and perform more efficiently. In that state you usually can't even approximately tell for how long you've been working.
>>
>>2628885
i went to massart for 3 years and it was a huge waste in learning fundamentals and realism, most people there dont care. it's great to be surrounded by "artists" but if you're at an open studio you already have that major benefit.
art school is mostly there for connections i think, you can get the skills for much cheaper. if you're like me and hate pretentious rich kids who are just there to fuck it's probably not for you. go study something else besides art if you need school, otherwise you're probably better off on your own.
although i admit there ate some amazing resources college offers that are harder to get on your own so definitely dont take the decision lightly, im just speaking to my own experiences and observations.

>>2635457
I dont use MS but this might help, should be more or less similar across different software.

Depends on what you're trying to improve, Anatomy for Sculptors is nice for anatomy, read Frame Ink for composition.

>>2636105
There's a nice major update to Krita not long ago, so some issue might no longer be around. I m using Krita on Windows and it works fine with my Huion tablet.

>>2635925
I believe it's ok to use Ctrl + Z to a certain degree since it's harder to draw with tablet in general, most people did that anyway I'm sure. Anyway more practice would be totally fine.

what are you even asking here...
painting = using paint, do you mean shading, like doing values that look smooth? then learn to do that with a pencil, it IS possible (go for a smooth pencil like 2b and upwards)
Or you could actually use gouache/watercolor/diluted china ink, you might need special paper for this though, but I think is worth it... or go digital.
>>
>>2636261

what do you mean by "get better at color theory"? understanding it better? being able to find a good set of colors fast?

for the first one I'd watch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qj1FK8n7WgY

for the second one I would watch the video then use http://paletton.com/ to be able to pick a palette really quick, challenge yourself to do some exercises and understand how this tool picks the colors for you and you will be able to do it yourself.
don't forget to also do color studies of other paintings.

>>2636593
well it can be various things, in drawing normally it means the direction of the subject you're drawing, the gesture. You hear Vilppu saying this a lot.

Before diving into that kind of stuff when i was just starting out I built up mileage just by finding cool artworks on deviant art I liked and copying them. (or like copying anime or whatever) Remember to keep doing what you like and maybe set aside 30 minutes at first for copying some loomis figures/ heads or whatever.

You could also check out proko on youtube, who goes over some loomis stuff. Make sure you pause the video and take in/ copy though.

Obviously will vary from monitor to monitor, but for the most accurate picture you usually want contrast in the middle and brightness low. An ideally calibrated monitor has a luminance of 120 cd/m2. Without calibration tools the best you can do is go to one of the various sites like http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/ and do it manually as best you can.

Keys to drawing->Fun with a pencil(optional)->Succesful Drawing->Figure drawing for all it's worth->head&hands->creative illustration

Keys to drawing is about observational drawing(just draw what you see), Loomis is about construction(simplify shit into basic shapes, draw over them). You need both to draw so you kinda need to learn both anyway. Start with Keys to Drawing because it tackles symbol drawing which you need to get out of the way in the very first place.

I guess what I'm asking is how to get silky smooth gradients in graphite. I mean, I have and can do it by a ton of tiny little strokes, but I'm wondering if there's a way to do it without killing my wrist. Blending stumps are trash too.

Probably powder is the way to go. Or maybe a graphite stick?

Beginner here and was wondering...
Is this picture done with construction or any other fundamentals in mind?
I really like Rayman legends' drawings and sprites, yet they seem to have that random wild factor of not constructing or anything, just straight into lines.
This is more or less what I liked about my own drawings before trying to apply fundamentals to everything.. Now I can't make these characters with this really free expression and pose anymore. Due to construction "limiting" my intuitive dynamic choices somewhat.

I hope you can understand what I'm saying. This art is not necessarily bad because of no construction/fundamentals and I'm feeling conflicted whether to keep practising with them because I also like the results of drawings without them.

What should I do?! Thanks.

Check out "Fun with a pencil", it's a fairly simple Loomis book on construction

I don't know how to put it well, but if something is drawn in cartoonish style, doesn't mean it's "random". Artist can exaggerate something or skimp on details, and you can't exaggerate or discard something you don't know about. If people jump straight to drawing, it usually means that they have a good idea of the underlying construction without putting it down on paper.
>>
How do I lineart?
Specifically in Manga Studio 5. Do people use a tool for it or just simply trace over it and have magically stiff hands? My lines are way too shaky when I clean up my sketch by drawing over on another layer.
>>
>>2638249
Drawings like these require a very different kind of fundamentals than anatomically correct drawings. It's more about having a sense for design, making attractive shapes and proportions and lines happen. Look at how asymmetrical the character is, how different parts have different sizes (compare the legs to triangles, for example.) and attractive shapes. "Shape design" is one of the keywords you should search for.

As for the poses, try drawing figures in motion and try to develop a sense of weight and elegance.
>>
>>2639063
I think most drawing programs have a on option build a spline instead of a "freehand" line, but this is a crutch

If your lines are shaky, then you're probably drawing too slow. Try doing your lines in a single motion.
>>
What free drawing program do people use?

Krita, Gimp, FireAlpaca, MediBang Pro
