what is some advice that you would tell yourself if you could go back in time?

mine:

>don't focus on one subject for more than a week, switch things up hourly

>write down your goals at the start of the day, and what you are now better at at the end of the day

>if you can't proficiently do the absolute basics, you have no chance with more advanced stuff. start with simple shapes

>know your end goal and figure out what you need to learn in order to get there, learning for the sake of learning with no end goal doesn't work
>>

Don't blend.

>>
>>2622264

>>
>you're doing fine. just keep going.

don't see any sense in trying to make my past more "perfect". The mistakes I made were huge learning experiences. they're important.

>Don't pick up drumming/playing guitar. Do wrist stretches and most importantly keep biking and weightlifting.

>Stop sitting around waiting for something to happen. Get off your ass and make something happen.

Why does everyone say this? I knew a skilled artist who tried and couldn't get any buyers. Everyone makes it sound like all you have to do is be skilled, open commissions, and get paid, but is that actually true in real life?
>>
>>2622615
Stop being so emotional and realize your situation. Personal honor, child-like morals and dignity don't matter jack shit when you have bills to pay. They are abstract, they belong to normies to limit their success.
Just a lil' advice.
>>
>>2622621
No, you need a wide skillset of marketing, dealing with people, confidence, self evaluation, persistence and originality.
You can make up for some with the others, but it's naive to think that you just git gud and the audience takes care of the rest for you.
>>
>>2622425
>>2622394

yeah why??
>>
Have more self-confidence. By your late 20's, you will be one of the best working artists in your medium. Don't let your friends and family discourage you. Your work will sell for many thousands of dollars before you're 30, so just keep doing what you do and try to have fun. Leave that teaching job before you're 25. It will hold you back. Don't give most of your money to that girlfriend. She doesn't love you, and you will have passed up at least four other nicer girls who would have been willing to take the ride with you rather than dragging your career down.
>>
>>2622621

No. People just say that because they see a few trash artists get commissions, but they don't see the thousands of trash artists who don't get a cent.

It also gives people a convenient high horse so they can smugly declare "I could do it but I won't stoop to that level."
>>
keep drawing. making mistakes is how you get better.

>>2622791
it sucks that your family didnt believe in you. Although you pushing through it has made you strong
>>
>>2622866
That's the thing. Sometimes you think maybe you wouldn't go back and tell your younger self these things if you could. If what you wanted in life was easy, would it be as satisfying? Maybe the best part is the struggle. I probably wouldn't have developed a unique voice or style without all those rocky patches in my life. This is what compels people towards some artists' work over others'.

None. Both are memes. Shit ass memes.

> Inb4 you're dumb if you think you can pull out 800$ per week out of furry porn trash without any decent drawing skills
>>
Dear me some years ago:

The best critic of your artwork is yourself. Art is something that is difficult to make money off of, unless you are the best. Listening to others and taking their advice is possible, but the person who should be bashing your art the most is you.

In fact, it's almost impossible to please everyone, so you should really disregard most criticism you here. Don't worry, many of them tend to be useless criticism anyway, so you're not really losing anything.

You should also avoid this board if entirely possible. It might seem like the people here are talented, but really it's just a place for people to attack each other.

To myself :
- Fuck videogames. Especially pic related, huge waste of time;
- The learning curve at first is scary, but it gets fun and challenging;
- Always get in the flow;
- Draw everyday, even when you're not in the mood, if you stop for a day or two, your hand will get stiff;
- Draw stuff you'd like to make a living of later not, not random stuff for the sake of "Learning fundamentals";
- Doing NSFW on the side grants confiidence and anatomy practice. Also pays some bills;
- Try to stick to ONE project at a time, salvage unfinished ones;
- Glue a notebook to your butt, store every idea you have on paper, salvage them later;

Keep copying manga and comic artists while you learn anatomy and all the other important shit. >creativity can only be self taught

Would strongly disagree with this. I attended an art school for 4 years where I quickly realized that the curriculum was extremely conceptually based rather than technically. Although most students who graduated didn't have a high technical skill in their mediums, the school DID actually do a good job in teaching people how to be creative. It can be done, and it's something that can be practiced. It essentially comes down to how to brainstorm an idea and different techniques to explore and deviate from a prompt while still solving the problem.

This. Nobody remembers CGI in films but everybody remembers Luke shouting "NOOOO!" to Vader. Nowadays people care fuckall about effects in "Jurassic Park" that were awesome back then and today are just meh, but they sure as hell love the setting and T-Rex chase.

Same applies to paintings/pictures/comics/whatever.
>>
>>2624778

What? Mentioning Jurassic Park is contrary to the point you're trying to make. It wasn't carried by special effects alone no, but it would never have made it if it wasn't for CGI.
>>
>>2624778
literal moron. you're saying jurassic park didn't have a large crew with a huge amount of technical abilities? special effects don't equate to a film being technically proficient dumbass, it goes to actors, cinematography, well written script, good directing and a shit load of other stuff. if that stuff wasn't nailed the film would be utter crap, and it goes the same with a drawing and its fundamentals. without them anything you do is shit and shouldn't be expected to be appreciated. just hire someone with the technical skill to draw out an image containing the story you want to convey
>>
>>2624564
In most instances. The free exploration of any area of a creative art can only come from someone who has no doubts at all in their ability to tell a convincing story. Without this confidence practice isn't enjoyable. It's dull, unrewarding, unintuitive and leads only to anxiety. You're better off killing yourself than putting up with that madness.

Yeah but when you come up with an idea based on some standard procedure it's not going to be totally original, because it follows logically from the premise so it's unlikely to startle the audience. Whereas true genius, even if trying to follow a taught procedure, will have groundbreaking ideas once in a while and produce truly outstanding work
>>
>Keep a sketchbook and a pen or pencil on you at all times. Make quick life studies whenever you're having some time to kill such as waiting for the bus or taking a shit.

>Draw ugly and uninteresting everyday objects from life every day even if it's boring. It's all about training your eye and hand. I promise it will help when drawing cool shit from imagination even though you don't see it now. Don't worry about making beautiful sketches. As long as you're making a sincere effort you WILL improve over time. And life drawing can be really fun, too.

>Draw all sorts of things. Don't be intimidated by any particular subject

>In case of doubt, draw something from life. Don't doodle. Doodling will do very little for improving your drawing skill.

>Draw directly with ink a lot. It really helps your line confidence.

>You're on the right track practicing construction a lot. Keep it up. However draw man made objects from life also, it will help more than just inventing cubes.

>Get into drawing landscapes now. Practice the shit out of simplifying complex sillouhettes such as trees. Don't try to reinvent the wheel idiot, copy the way it's shown in the books. It will help with everything else

>You actually have great taste already. It won't change as much as you'd think. And your great taste is not equal with your skills, so that's why you feel shitty about your work right now. Just keep practicing. Trust in your own taste and do not keep too much attention to trends

>For god's sake if you see art you like on the internet save the damn pictures. Don't count on everything to stay on the internet forever or that you will find it again. People will delete their blogs and forum handles. Posts disappears. Save shit.

I started drawing just 6 days ago, I'm 23 years old.

My advice to my past self is:

>Start drawing early, don't waste time, one day you'll regret disregarding art completely for so long just because your lines are wobbly and you can't make a stickman. Don't give up just because you see a small step in from of you, infact there's an endless staircase waiting to be climbed, with rewards on each step. Don't throw away what you draw, keep it on the step behind you to remind how you have improved when you'll be on the next one. And most importantly, do not be afraid of drawing because it might come out badly.

And that's how I regret wasting years of my life.
I'm 23 and making my 5th drawing right now, prior to this... fear, regret, and blank paper.

You'll find that you'll tend to push your comfort zone more when you're constantly finding new things to draw, and you'll have stronger motivation behind it as well. If you keep a good balance you'll learn what you need to learn much faster.
>Go outside and draw from observation at every chance that you can, you'll find it breathtaking and challenging, and you'll also avoid a severe vitamin D deficiency. Also, keep drawing materials on hand at all times.
>Record or act on every strong idea as soon as you get them, you're not as creatively bereft as you think you're just lazy
>Loomis early and Loomis hard

>If talking to teenage/kid self, take your art classes and potential mentors/art buddies seriously and don't run away from your passions. Read more books, watch more films, fuck video games. Watch the ego.

I relate so much to the unique snowflake shit style

Don't pick up that blending stump you dumb fuck.

Creativity needs a stimulus. It can't be brute forced with nothing but a blank canvas. Look up CYOA threads in /tg/ to spark some ideas.

>Color is in the light, not the object
>>
>>2637223
Well, yeah, but unless the light is reflecting off something you can't see it. That's like saying "there is water in the air", it's technically true, but I don't see how you can practically apply it in art.

It's not a red cup, its a cup reflecting red light.

Point being, I find it easier to consider the color of the light before the object and color is relative, its not "red", it looks red next to "x".

Ultimately it was a realisation that I could paint things whatever color i pleased.

I think gaugin said that that beginners think objects have one color, but the pros know that the color of an object is never static.

Sweet loomis, my head is swirling with the possibilities of applying this knowledge. Is there a book/teacher that elaborates on this or is it just a part of general color theory? I'm still stuck with ink.

Don't draw anime. Don't. Fuckin'. Do it.

Do life drawing, it doesn't suck, and you'll suck if you ignore it.

Learn how to draw realism before you attempt stylization.

Draw every day. If you stop for one day, you'll notice the difference. If you stop for two days, other people will.

Don't take critique personally, even when phrased cruelly. Pretend it's advice from the grandmother you don't like much: bitchy, rude, and more often than not she has a good reason to say what she's saying.

Richard Schmids books on color and painting require multiple reads but you'll get acquire something new each time. Hit up the artbook thread or just buy it.

if your faces all look off in a similar way and you can't work out what you're doing wrong, try tracing faces to 'recalibrate' to what a realistic face looks like.

tracing also helps to practice what lines you do and don't use when drawing to capture a likeness in a face or what lines make a face look ugly or not, which things you should emphasise etc. it also works with figures.

i recommend anyone studying the figure/face to at least try it out once, i was surprised how much it helped me
