This stuff never, ever ceases to blow my fucking mind. I might not be much of a fan of the themes but the technical skill alone is insane.

Stuff by Ingres comes to mind but I can't really choose the best painting.

You have it wrong in the first place. All those things are indeed important in the art of painting, and yet the important question is not what shows them best; for the better in art doesn't concern showing, but hiding. Excellent skill ought to be employed and there should be nothing to be censured in the skill, yet individual means should not attract more attention than the whole of the art, which is the end. The hardest thing is to make a difficult thing seem easy.
