Something's broken, what do I do?

What do we draw?

>Whatever you want. At this point there's no required topic so draw your heart out. Make sure you submit at least a half hour of work or you may get a low effort warning.

What's a low effort warning?

>The goal is to get people to draw every day by turning it into a competition. The low effort warning system is to prevent people from posting last minute, quick sketches when they're feeling lazy. If you receive a warning and it happens again within a month you'll be eliminated.

>This rule has been the cause of a lot of concern amongst newer artists so let me reiterate: this system is to police low effort content and has nothing to do with the quality of the work. New artists are more than welcome.

What happens if I'm eliminated?

>A new Last Artist Standing challenge starts every week. If you get eliminated then get it together and rejoin next week.

How can there be a new Last Artist Standing challenge every week?

>This is a way to let new artists join in and to allow re-entry for the eliminated. Every week a new challenge is started. If you joined on week 1 and make it to week 2 then your daily submission counts for both the first and second Last Artist Standing. If you get eliminated then you're eliminated from both challenges and you'll be able to rejoin next week.

Will I have an advantage if I join later in the week?

>The winner of a Last Artist Standing will be the artist with the longest streak. If you join on day 1 and last until day 85 then you'll have a streak of 85. If there's only one person left in the challenge when you're eliminated but they joined on Day 7 then they'll need to continue on for another week. If they're eliminated before then, you win.

let's say you do a painting and you do it digitally

mountains? how are they spaced, what is the negative spacing, what are the shapes, how are the colors mixed, how do I recreate shapes that look natural like mountains? how do I combine colors in a way that looks natural?
really break everything down into the most basic things:

shapes (positive and negative)
lights and darks
colors/values

lordslump, i really like the shapes of your thumbnails! Did you have specific ideas/references when you designed them, or was it a more freeform/half-abstract process? Also i like the character with a hat, looks really similar to her gun.

Mathias, that's a neat handle shape. How's the suction cup used?

Lokki's revolver looks very cool, especially those engravings. I'm not sure if that's intended, but i see a sun and flames shapes on the muzzle, seems like a incinerating/holy artifact.

grach, that laser shotgun looks HNNNNG, i want to wield it ingame somewhere!

AAphk, the muzzle area of that gun seems a bit too bulky in 3/4, compared to the handle part.

Santi, Energy Pistol and Sniper Rifle and Arcane Bolt Pistol are my favorite desings. Scythe Rifle also looks promising, but the scythe part looks not fully defined. Were you inspired by the Warcraft designs? I know i was :3

Regarding the time management, i think the most valuable lesson for me was setting a hard timings (from 10 minutes to 1 hour max) for various designs/part of designs so i don't spend the whole day picking colors or changing the shape of the handle. Perfectionism-based procrastination sucks.

For a lot of them i had the large shapes/silhouette/concepts in my head already, while other times when i was stuck and thought that some piece or a whole gun wasnt working id quickly slam out iterations of some general shape proportions that i like and try and think critically about what works best and what doesnt and adjust the shapes accordingly. Then i just molded designs into the shapes thinking about how im concentrating detail and generally trying to echo the larger form im designing into basically what i always do i dunno

I think streaks instead of weeks goes a long way towards shifting the focus since token losses among the early weeks will make catching up easier for newcomers. Of course it's by no means a complete solution because it's impossible to actively do anything to beat a flawless' streak (besides Loomis'ing us). However, if you have a leaderboard that incorporates the community challenges (let's pretend the topic challenge doesn't exist) in its statistics, people can set achievable goals in terms of moving up in certain rankings if that's what they want to do.

I love the community challenges because they spice up the long vague slog of the primary challenge with short-term, focused efforts. I hope you all keep coming up with fun ones, and I'll try to do the same.

Sounded like it's still 'who has been here the longest' except now there will be a load of different leaderboard order options that nobody will ever click on. If there's an overall rank then the topic people are going to all be top, and the site will be rewarding doing as many challenges, topic, daily submissions as possible, which I think starts to get very detrimental to someone's drawing progress. It starts feeling like all that filler crap companies put into video games to keep you playing long after you stopped having fun.

If there's could be a hypothetical ideal or incentive it would have something to do with assessing someone's progress/improvement over time, but I can't think of any real way to have an automatic measurement of that. LAS does a crude job of measuring 'devotion' to logging into the website and I guess that indirectly correlates to effort but not really. Maybe lava can pay industry professionals to give manual ratings on your weekly progress.
I think challenges are the closest we've come so far, especially the ones that make you study, but there's just no real interest in them here. Nobody talks about them or cares when they end. Some site improvements would help a lot, challenge/regular las submission spotlights on the dashboard, same on user profiles. Also LAS is the perfect setup for having a drawing progress timeline generated on your user page with a little tweaking like you could manually choose one thumbnail from each month to show your history. I hate getting interested in these things knowing that nothing will probably ever come.

The incentive is the external motivation the site provides that supplements whatever internal motivation got you started drawing in the first place. Whether it's the "don't break the chain" mentality or the appeal of making and participating in community challenges. A leaderboard has the potential to add another dimension of possible motivation to the site for the people who are spurred on by that kind of thing. For those uninterested in a rat race, I can't think of a better mechanism than the community challenges, but obviously they need the support of the community to come up with interesting ones.

I agree that the profile pages need substantial revamping, even if it's just turning the list of dozens or hundreds of links into a gallery of thumbnails like the submission page. There are a lot of opportunities there like giving the option to curate a set of submissions you like.

The "pay for professional critique" is absolutely hilarious, by the way.

One thing that would vastly increase the importance of community challenges would be an easily-accessible submission gallery. It currently takes 4 clicks from the dashboard to see a single submission whereas the main LAS gallery is reachable in 1. In terms of web design that means the former is completely irrelevant unless you are very intent on reaching it.

I feel so lethargic guys.

For two months I've been doing the bare minimum except for a few challenges. I don't have the motivation to pick up studying again and I can't think of anything I want to draw from imagination.

How do I get out of this?

So I was trying to defend myself on the tribunal and my comment was too long so I'm just gonna post it here.


I know this doesn't look like 30 mins, but I did do a lot of off screen cleaning/preparing in regards of setting up my folders, / layers / brushes in SAI that will help me when I'm coloring and shading. I don't do a lot of drawing on the computer either so I was really unfamiliar on how to set up my layers with right mode and opacity and ended up generally experimenting which did take half of my drawing time as well as my drawing confidence isn't as strong as traditional. The other half was me looking up references and deciding which colors to choose that would resemble the show. Finding the colors for rarity bedroom was a challenge. Also you may have not noticed but I did do a base color for rarity, which I actually did twice because the first time I didn't like the color. At this time I realized I needed to leave for work so I panicked and did the shitty background shade to help look I did something different. Unfortunately I wish I could do more than 30 mins, but I have been put on a different work shift and I'm barely struggling to keep 30 mins to draw especially since I don't like to rush ;_;

I don't want to punish you because a lot of us have days where there's really only 30 minutes to spare, but if you knew you only had that much time, why did you work on something that took so long to set up? 10 minutes into setting up (at most) you should've cut your losses and started on something new. At least then you'd have more luck convincing us that a 20 minute sketch took 30 minutes.

What do you guys think about some kind of permanent challenges?

Like for an MMO or Destiny or something there's always some non changing ones that will help you get to an ok level before needing to grind the daily and weekly challenges.

It could be more skill based too, like have a few permanent challenge trees, like animation challenges 1-5 and you have to work through the first one to unlock the second, which will then take longer but reward you with more XP/whatever to move up the boards.

This way we could have some permanent challenge trees that could basically be a practical sticky: challenges to work through Loomis or Hampton and draw all the exercises, or a challenge where you do ever increasingly complex poses from imagination, or one where you learn to draw shapes then objects then eventually a room/building/vehicle from imagination in perspective.

It'd take some dedication to plan out and set up, but I'd be happy to do much of it, since people would gain leader board levels and maybe a medal/badge for each challenge tree (book/area) completed, but more importantly they would be actively getting gud along the way.

I like study plans like the Huston Challenge had, they're nice.

Could even have suggested trees depending on what the artist wants as an end goal. The Drawing 1 and 2 type challenges would be standard, but if you choose animator then emphasis would be put onto animation, gesture etc challenges, if you choose concept artist then more emphasis on perspective and design trees, if it's illustrator then more focus on the thumbnail/readability, colour, composition and rendering type ones.

It really will take a while to plan out but if anons can make the challenges for each book or area like the animation ones then it should be straightforward to plot out the challenge trees and recommended routes based on what you choose to specialise in.

After going through the challenge trees for basic skills and Loomis etc, you can choose to specialise and the suggested tree routes will show up; like in Civilisation games, if you're going for a certain victory you'll need a certain route of technologies. For space you need Flight-advanced flight-etc.

If its done well enough then you could follow a study plan that's tracked on the site that rewards you for completing books and areas of study, and then how you use these new learned skills I'm your own submissions or whatever is up to you.

Good point and I should have done this, but most of the time I have no idea what I'm going to draw until i start. You can do part time schooling on the side if you want, or working might make you realize that school is worth committing to fully.
