Acrylic gesso is completely different than Rabbit Skin Glue Gesso.
Making gesso with water, RSG, and Gypsym results in gesso that's extremely brittle, which is best for hard supports like wood.
However, I have noticed one interesting thing; If you make RSG and gypsym gesso, and apply it to canvas, then paint a picture on it, by applying heat, then pressure on the dry picture, you can cause the gesso to crack, like old paintings. This can be brought out with a dark wash, but the crack patterns resemble old paintings perfectly. This was what art forgers did to forge old looking paintings.
I'd recommend buying Acrylic Matte Medium in bulk. You can paint a thin layer over a drawing that you then paint over, with the drawing showing through. It's basically Acrylic Gesso, without the gritty binder and white pigment.
