Artists who ape established artist usually make it. It's not until later they develop thier own style and truly stand on thier own. Early on they mimic/copy styles that are already have the people's attention and develop from there. This is true in both comics and mangas.

I do that because it gives me a fall back so that if I have to change something later on, I wont have to go back to rendering more of the background. That's happened with pictures in the past and it's super disheartening. Also with this I wasn't sure what I wanted to do with the water.

It's coming quite nicely, I like where you are headed. But focus on those waves that different objects cause. Now we can see a faint stream on those rocks, but leaves tend to cause waves into all directions? If those are floating along the stream, force is not applied downwards. Besides it takes a bit of mass to actually cause clear waves.

Also try out different values on that surface, for me it seems bit dull. I would try really strong contrast that happens often with water. Shameless self promotion, but this was my approach some time ago and maybe it helps you.

More tests, india ink and kids plastic crayons on glossy cardboard. Subject and proportions were all fucked, so I ended up testing weird combinations.

This is quite interesting mixture, because it works in a similar way with overlay in ps on grayscale. Also that surface is quite durable and handles water better than I thought, at least it's about 3-4mm thick. I happen to have this material hundreds of square meters, because it's used as a packaging material for industrial printing plates.
