Something's broken, what do I do?

What do we draw?

>Whatever you want. At this point there's no required topic so draw your heart out. Make sure you submit at least a half hour of work or you may get a low effort warning.

What's a low effort warning?

>The goal is to get people to draw every day by turning it into a competition. The low effort warning system is to prevent people from posting last minute, quick sketches when they're feeling lazy. If you receive a warning and it happens again within a month you'll be eliminated.

>This rule has been the cause of a lot of concern amongst newer artists so let me reiterate: this system is to police low effort content and has nothing to do with the quality of the work. New artists are more than welcome.

What happens if I'm eliminated?

>A new Last Artist Standing challenge starts every week. If you get eliminated then get it together and rejoin next week.

How can there be a new Last Artist Standing challenge every week?

>This is a way to let new artists join in and to allow re-entry for the eliminated. Every week a new challenge is started. If you joined on week 1 and make it to week 2 then your daily submission counts for both the first and second Last Artist Standing. If you get eliminated then you're eliminated from both challenges and you'll be able to rejoin next week.

Will I have an advantage if I join later in the week?

>The winner of a Last Artist Standing will be the artist with the longest streak. If you join on day 1 and last until day 85 then you'll have a streak of 85. If there's only one person left in the challenge when you're eliminated but they joined on Day 7 then they'll need to continue on for another week. If they're eliminated before then, you win.

Why'd you not join the challenge tripfag?

Nathan Fowkes said that he had spent somewhere around 20 000 hours (No I didn't mistype) doing life drawings. How the hell do you get to do that much? Say I did 3 hours a day of life drawing, one year would still only amount to 1100 hours, so If I did that which I already would consider to be a lot it would take somewhere around 18 years.
Is that really what it takes to reach the top? I just don't even understand how he did that much.

Seperate from other studies, atm I spend pretty much the entire day either looking for information or looking into art, then about 5hours doing actual work. Thing is I'm seldom doing lifedrawing, I'm mostly doing various studies of other pictures of drawing from imagination, so fitting 3 hours of real life drawing into that routine would be a lot to me.

What's it mean by life drawing? Drawing still lives for 3 hours a day? I dunno how'd you get a live figure model for many hours every day.

Exactly. Three hours is "serious hobbyist" levels of work but far from "obsessed professional" effort. The 20k number is probably a gross overestimate anyway. People aren't very good at estimating such large quantities of time.

Specific numbers aside, I want to do environments in the same way that he does, but it worries me that he has so much time in figure drawing and life drawing. Is it truly necessary to spend that much time drawing from life if you just wanna do environments? I can see how doing figure drawing and such helps you to see and create a natural flow of shapes, but is that the key to his success?
I would MUCH rather spend thousand hours painting actual environments and, doing master studies, and practices. Can I not learn the same principles that way?

Figure drawing teaches you foreshortening and hones your knowledge of perspective. It also helps you to better understand flow and rhythm. While it may not be wholly necessary for everyone, it's a good learning experience for anyone.

I have personally improved more in figure drawing classes than in any other class that I have taken, so I would really recommend it at least once.

Many community colleges and 4 year state universities offer figure drawing classes. If you apply as a non-degree seeking student, then you can usually just take one or two classes. You'd probably have to pay out of pocket though, so I'd stick to a community college.

After you've taken a class, you can probably find a circle in your area that hires a model as a group. It usually works by everyone there throwing in 5-10 bucks, and the model gets paid without anybody having to break the bank.

I've done a year of art school, and the first two months we did pretty much only that, and after that we had a model for one day every week. I can definitely more easily draw organic shapes, anatomy and living beings, but I haven't really felt that I've done enough that it can truly help my environments, like Nathan Fowkes says it has done for him.

I just find figure drawing to be extremely draining and boring when compared to stuff like master studies or general practices, so I wouldn't really want to do more of it unless its absolutely necessary. My plan has been to do just enough figure drawing classes that I can comfortably place figures into scenes in a natural way without having to do to many details like faces or hands.
So If I got the anatomy part down and can throw out the rough figures I need for my environment concepts, do you think I'd still have bigger use of figure drawing over other practices like say studying masterworks?

Requesting critique for my thumbnailing process. In normal paintings i go straight to color (starting with super unsaturated colors like Mike Azevedo does), but with these iterations i decided to follow the advice of pros and do the values thumbs first and then just apply color schemes to them with the Color blending mode.
The result, however, looks extremely shitty - unpredictable colors all over the place, i have now idea on how to control them except for going in manually and redoing every single thumbnail.
So the question is, what should i fix/practice to have color thumbs that can be shown to art director/client as a final choice before the rendering? Should i also have a cleaner lineart for them?
Also if anyone have good examples or artists that do and post these online, please share them.

That's pretty good. I just hit 16 Sunday. Quick tip, capture a ton of Weedle, Caterpie, and Pidgey, each only needs 12 candies to evolve to their second stage. When you have a metric ass ton of them, activate a lucky egg and start evolving them. You'll get 1000 exp for each one that you evolve, and you'll level up crazy fast. Transfer the Metapod, Kakuna, and Pidgeoto that you get for extra candies if you run out before you've evolved all of the Weedle, Caterpie, and Pidgey.

You might be able to get by with just master copies, and I'd be happy to list a few good names for you to look at if you need them.

Probably the most important thing for you to take away from master copies would be the way that light acts, as I can see that being easily applicable to environments, but the balance of positive and negative space, as well as finding attractive shapes would probably help too.

I'd also say to just learn about rules of design and composition. Thinking about stuff like the rule of thirds can really improve a composition.

Alright that makes sense, I think I have a very strong sense of shapes due to my visual library being so big and always being passionate about the art aspect of whatever I've been into, so then I think I'll stick to the plan and learn through the mediums I enjoy , I think I have a enough figure drawing in the coming year of artschool too, even if its less than the average school would have.

Thanks a ton for the insight, I'd absolutely LOVE to hear any recommendations for masters to study as that has been a huge issue for me to figure out on my own.
