Something's broken, what do I do?

>The site is currently in the alpha phase of development and is being built around us as we compete so sometimes things go wrong. If you ever need any help send me a tweet @LavaFlake or shoot me an email [email protected].

What do we draw?

>Whatever you want. At this point there's no required topic so draw your heart out. Make sure you submit at least a half hour of work or you may get a low effort warning.

What's a low effort warning?

>The goal is to get people to draw every day by turning it into a competition. The low effort warning system is to prevent people from posting last minute, quick sketches when they're feeling lazy. If you receive a warning and it happens again within a month you'll be eliminated.

>This rule has been the cause of a lot of concern amongst newer artists so let me reiterate: this system is to police low effort content and has nothing to do with the quality of the work. New artists are more than welcome.

What happens if I'm eliminated?

>A new Last Artist Standing challenge starts every week. If you get eliminated then get it together and rejoin next week.

How can there be a new Last Artist Standing challenge every week?

>This is a way to let new artists join in and to allow re-entry for the eliminated. Every week a new challenge is started. If you joined on week 1 and make it to week 2 then your daily submission counts for both the first and second Last Artist Standing. If you get eliminated then you're eliminated from both challenges and you'll be able to rejoin next week.

Will I have an advantage if I join later in the week?

>The winner of a Last Artist Standing will be the artist with the longest streak. If you join on day 1 and last until day 85 then you'll have a streak of 85. If there's only one person left in the challenge when you're eliminated but they joined on Day 7 then they'll need to continue on for another week. If they're eliminated before then, you win.

I don't know if I'm gonna make it guys, My ligament is consistently feeling worse and worse each day that goes by that I don't draw. Watching others who have the spark pass me by only compounds onto the fact that I'm beginning to rapidly lose Neuroplasticity.

Others have also said my lines aren't very 3d looking.

Not only that, when people ask me to show them my work, this is all I have to flash them.

It's true, my environment art is lacking, but thanks to LAS I put more work into it than I normally would, I still have a long way to go and I'd love to make background art similar to samurai jacks once I learn the fundamentals

I've gotten off my ass and started rewriting the tools I mentioned a long while ago. Namely the graphs that I was posting. I'll implement them again but with less shitty code, so you can generate your own etc without me having to post them here.

For today I just added the image grabber, which lets you view a user's submissions easier. If the images aren't direct links it doesn't help any though. I'll see if I can grab images through tumblr post links or imgur albums and such, but I doubt it.

I'll get on adding some of, if not all, the graphs tomorrow. If there's something you'd like to see me add feel free to mention it to me and I'll see if it's doable.
I wanted to do it today, but I spent a lot of time setting up centos properly and forgot the time.

I'm mostly just struggling to find which paintings to study and for what reasons so I thought he could help. Google hasn't been a whole lot of help for me when trying to find specific practices to improve my environments. The general advice seems to just be "work on perspective", but I honestly don't know what they mean by that, since I do already know the fundamentals of perspective.

Resist the urge to just drag the colour slider down towards black and call it a shadow. You want to bump up the saturation a little. You need to know what type of light is in your scene, warm lights like the sun create cool shadows so you slide the hue a little bit to the cool side, the opposite for cool lights like fluorescent bulbs. It's something you'll start to get from experience, life studies are very good.

For things like skin it's a little harder, subsurface scattering makes the form shadows warmer and even more saturated because the light likes to get jammed up in there and bring out some of the redness of flesh and blood. The skin directly in the light will just reflect that surface colour, not what's underneath. So that's what you were imitating in your recent drawing even if you didn't know why.

Added the submission time stability and submission times graph for single users. Anything else that might be graph-able when it comes to a one person?

Else I'm moving onto the overall statistics stuff, like the decay of flawless, overall submission times and eliminations now that lava added the elimations page that I can parse through.

I like the Russian landscape painters a lot, guys like Shishkin, Isaac Levitan, Orlovsky etc. If you want some more rocky/snowy mountain type landscapes try E. T. Compton, if you want gorgeous lights over waterfalls and such try Albert Bierstadt. Or if you mean more concept arty type designing environments then maybe look at Dorje and Sparth.

Awesome dude, exactly what I was looking for, thanks.
The one guy I did find and personally liked myself was actually Bierstadt, since his paintings have some nice deep blues and greens which a lot of the other landscape painters I found does not, so I'm currently doing 2 master studies of him, but he was the only one I found.
I really like the look of the painters you mentioned too, especially ET Compton. You seem to have really good taste, I've got more than enough to work with but just while we're at it do you have any other landscape painters that isn't just yellow/brown/desaturated?


Also I'm currently doing imagination sketches whenever I feel tired from doing tedious and analytical studies just to get some energy back, which I've felt kinda guilty about since I was just postponing my real studies, but I guess it's actually a smart thing to do now that you mention it.
