Hey OP, there's a guy who does exactly that technique, check pic related, the elephant guy to the right by devin platts, check it out, he explains the whole process in like 2 hours.

But the thing is I can never follow those steps it's too unnatural to paint like that, just rendering while thinking about the light and everything at once is simpler, try it I guess. But your lineart has to be fucking spot on if you want it to work.
