i'll start.
moving in with bf and i asked him what he wants to hang on the walls. he requested a pic of the northern lights and a fjord (he's really into traveling norway and iceland...).
now i desperately need some really awesome paintings with that subject. i've tried to find something but it all looks so cheap and clichée. does anyone know about artists that have something like that that i can actually look at every day without going insane?
pic is the only one of northern lights i found that i like. he isn't thrilled since it's not purple and green. help me!

You should try to balance, drawing with pen mostly will help you make less mistakes over time and visualize your images better beforehand since you can't erase. If you have a preference, do that for the most part, but balance your mediums a bit since they both have benefits.

When drawing from imagination with the subject doing a gesture, is it best to image the subject together with the background or do the subject first and try to "prop" it onto a background of sorts? Wouldn't the latter mess with perspective?

Are you still there anon? I am going to put together a reading list for you. It will take me a couple hours.

If you don't feel like waiting a couple hours, a couple things off the top of my head to get you started.

If you're at the point where you want to understand how light interacts with objects, you're better off reading/skimming basic physics textbooks than reading art books/tutorials on "lighting". obviously you don't have to do any of the calculations, unless you are interested in the actual computer graphics/rendering side of it, but actually draw out the geometry of light and how it interacts with objects. first in two dimensions, then in three dimensions. use simple objects. read about the inverse-square law for light. take pictures of simple objects with simple lighting setups and trace the value gradient (change in value over a surface) to confirm the inverse-square law yourself. again, these are all crude descriptions and experiments and are not going to be as precise as an actual physicist would do them, but they will help you build lighting models in drawings and understand how lighting works.

on a second thought, this is actually the easiest way to learn about lighting

you can either take pictures from google, or take your own pictures (whichever is faster), and then make them grayscale, and then plot the value of the pixels as a function of distance from the light source and see how often is non-linear/exponential. You'll usually find that the more "zoomed in" you are on the picture the more linear the change in value is, and the more "zoomed out" you are the more non-linear the change in value is.

so do this yourself, don't take my word for it. take some images where the distance from the light source is known and plot the value as a function of distance from the light source. it is tedious, and there are going to be people telling you to not listen to me, that it is too much work, but drawing light will be easier because of it.
>>
>>2603098
Dude thanks a bunch. Engineering student here so I've already taken optics but this would definitely be a good time to brush up on it and review inverse square law. I've actually had a good amount of luck so far just using pure physics knowledge and I will continue to put it into practice. I was wondering, however, if there were any "standard' approaches or something used by artists. I was thinking along the lines of a more qualitative than quantitative method if that makes sense? And if you don't mind putting together a reading list for me I would appreciate it a ton.
>>
>>2603006
Scott Robertson's "How to Render" is probably the most thorough and specific description of lighting, shadows, shadow shapes, and the physics of light that has been committed to text so far. Goes far beyond the usual diagram of a sphere with one light on it. It does NOT cover color very deeply at all, if you're looking for that see Gurney's "Color and Light" which covers color in detail but only provides a cursory explanation of what is happening value-wise when a light hits form. It does cover materials.
If you have an engineer mindset, it shouldn't be so shockingly tedious and technical for you (it is for alot of people.) It can be confusing if you don't understand how to construct shapes volumetrically, as with the "draw through" method. See his first book, "How to Render" for a primer on that. They are basically textbooks of Scott's courses at Art Center College of Design.
Also, everything in the books is explained and geared towards inorganic objects. Everything still applies, and you will transfer all of it, but it is not transfer for you in the text.
Best of luck.
>>
>>2603127
Sorry, typod. meant:
"See his first book, "How to Draw" for a primer on that."

also missed an -ed at the end of transfer
>>
>>2603127
>>2603129
Perfect, I've been finishing up "How to Draw" and trying to consolidate the knowledge therein so I guess I'll just jump right into "How to Render" next. Thank you so much for the advice, I really appreciate it!
>>
>>2603110

No problem. Good to know you're applying your knowledge of physics to art. I wish more art students would, since most of the confusion about "how do I make it look realistic" is a result of not understanding how the physical world works. Since I know you already have basic knowledge of physics, I'm going to focus the list on what I have saved in my bookmarks about rendering and geometry.

>I was wondering, however, if there were any "standard" approaches or something used by artists

From the discussions I have had with most realist artists, they use variations of the method, or similar methods to what I described. The qualitative aspects of the method come down to your aesthetic judgement and not about whether the measurements are true. Making aesthetic judgements, is, of course, a purely subjective descision-making process, which is another way of saying that you have to figure out what you like and do not like on your own, it is not something I can teach you. For example, I am partial to symmetry in art, but also symmetry diguised as asymmetry, i.e., things that might appear unbalanced to the 'uninitiated'. Think about a Jenga tower in it's final stages, or any kind of stack of cantilevered objects. In a drawing, it is easier to construct balanced, but seemingly asymmetric compositions. To me, the 'art' of the drawing is in the skill of disguising what are actually balanced structures as unbalanced.

>>2603127

These are good recommendations except Gurney's "Color and Light", which is dissappointing if you are expecting thorough explanations and tutorials. It acts more as a glossary of "lighting" and "color" terms which are illustrated with drawings he has already made from previous books and illustrations, rather than walking you through original illustrations made for the book. Also, Gurney is not consistent enough for me. I haven't read Scott Robertson's book on rendering, but if it is as good as his book on drawing I will say go for it.

if these aren't satisfying, not sure how you're google-fu is, but whenever I need good info on a subject/lecture notes I just use

[insert topic] site:.edu

which will usually lead my to a faculty directory, who have usually written a textbook, which is usually listed under

[title of textbook].pdf

and then of course if they have co-authors on non-paywalled publications/articles, those people usually have faculty pages with lectures notes, and so on and so forth, 5 hours later and you have thousands of .pdfs to comb through, but such is life.

Happy rendering. I'll post more that I find. IIRC, CMU has some pretty baller faculty in computer graphics but I could be mistaken (it might be stats/machine vision instead, my bookmarks are a nightmare).

Okay, last link dump, this one has more stuff on path tracing, global illumination, the rendering equation, etc.

http://www.cs.utah.edu/~ctuttle/research03/finalreport.pdf
http://web.cse.ohio-state.edu/~parent/classes/782/Papers/PhotonMap/photonMapping.pdf

I'm not sure how comfortable you are reading lots and lots of documents, so I would recommend not overwhelming yourself by actually reading all of these slides tomorrow or whenever you get the chance, but just skim, read the important bits, and make note of frequently occurring phrases and key terms. Also, always check the contents first, it will cut down on reading time significantly

I think the link below covers the most material and at a gentle pace too. It's from SIGGRAPH (a HUGE computer graphics conference, http://www.siggraph.org/), and one of the lecturers is Henrik Jensen (from the previous link from UCSD on photon mapping) and the other is a guy from Pixar. If I was to read through one of the lecture notes fully, I would probably read through this one and use all others as references.

(very sorry, last post)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cornell_box

For fun, you can draw these in two dimensions to "get a feel" for literally tracing rays, and then estimating the intensity of the effect of the ray after a given number of reflections off of objects. You can approximate values, roughly, by, like in billiards (again, I can hear physicists in the distance tearing there hair out with the analogy, but bear with me), estimating the type of path the photon will travel in the scene. You can start with a single photon and then see how far it travels and how many points it changes the value of (in the imaginary pitch black box with a light source that only emits one photon at a time) and what value it changes them to (by whatever the current displacement of the particle is, which, again, you are estimating (the distance formula is the tedious part because you're just taking a zillion square roots)).

I'm sure this has been asked before, but how would you recommend breaking out of an anime art style/a slump? Should I just start from the basics?
>>
>>2603378

If you enjoy drawing anime, don't stop drawing it.

/ic/, for the most part, has nothing against anime or the "anime style" (as it is often interpreted) we just don't want you to needlessly struggle in attempting to copy it, or, delude yourself into thinking you are making "good drawings", when in fact your drawings are lacking.

Often you will see people complain about this, by saying something along the lines of,

"anime is bad and you should feel bad"...

when they really mean,

"you don't know how to draw a straight line, yet are attempting to describe a form as complex as a human, and even more so in a style alternative to what is observed in nature, making your task all the more difficult than you might realize, something something dunning-kruger, gtfo etc".

If you are having difficulty drawing anime in the style that you want to, it may be because you lack the basic skills that you would learn from the fundamentals, i.e. mastering straight and curved lines, constructing forms in 1 & 2 point perspective, etc. The basic exercises are called "fundamental" because they will give you a greater ability in drawing any style, not just an 'anime style'.

So, while there isn't anything inherently wrong with drawing anime, we generally look down upon people who skip the fundamentals. As Hegel said, "Impatience asks for the impossible, wants to reach the goal without the means of getting there,"- likewise, we want you to be patient enough to draw straight lines correctly before you move onto advanced, stylized forms found in anime.

I mean, after all, this is a website dedicated to anime. If there is any place you should be drawing anime, it's here.

I've been thinking about promoting my art a bit more since i think i don't suck that much now, but i don't know where. Not pixiv, cuz i don't draw manga style much, i've been on deviantart till now but i don't like that site, not only the community, but i don't like the system in general there. I've seen people recommending artstation, reddit, instagram, or making facebook page dedicated to art, but i'm not nearly as skilled to use artstation and i've never really used instagram or reddit. Facebook page always felt kinda redundant to me since i post my art on my profile, idk thought. What would you recommend? what is your favorite site to expanding your fanbase?

So, I have recently started drawing after many years of not drawing.
I have always preferred of drawing on paper on pen.
But I really wanna start drawing on PC/tablet, I use my Tablet computer but I really can't get same feeling on drawing on paper.
Is it just a rookie thing or shall I keep practicing?
>>
>>2603571

yes, keep practicing. dedicate more time to drawing on a tablet than you do on paper. eventually you will get "the feel for it" back. when I go for months without drawing on a tablet, and then switch back, it usually takes me a few hours of intense 'warming up' to get back into it, then a couple weeks of this for it to feel normal and not require as much effort during the warm up stage. after about a month I am completely comfortable and will then begin making substantial improvements in my digital drawing technique.

Don't be afraid to cheat. Either make a 3D animation or find one on youtube, and observe (read: trace) how the lengths change with respect to a change in orientation of the box.

Remember, you don't have to do everything free-hand initially, you just have to be able to do it free-hand eventually.

An example video from a quick search from the first page of results.

Also, another idea I had. If you're concerned about the consistency of the lengths, rather than draw a row of separated boxes in different orientations, draw square torus/ring, and divide it into equal parts. If you then separate the parts, you will, albeit from one viewpoint only, have all different orientations of a box and the lengths will be consistent, assuming of course you can draw circles in perspective.

If the explanation wasn't clear, I would be happy to post an image to explain.

Where do you live that you can't buy shit online and get it delivered for a couple of euros? Ebay or amazon probably have what you want. Here in the UK, I just looked and found exactly the set you were talking about with free delivery on amazon.

Incidentally, I wouldn't get too hung up on brand. I don't really remember the cheapest oil pastels being any worse than the quality ones when I used them (which was twenty years ago, mind you).
>>
>>2604546

You should start with a pencil, for the simple reason that it's maybe a tenth of the cost if nothing else. You can use a pencil pretty much anywhere, which means you will draw more and, more importantly, draw from life more. The vast majority of artistic skills can be learned with a pencil. Tablets are novelty devices (fun ones, I admit) or for people who have already gotten gud and want to push into professional quality.

I say go for one year (to a GOOD school, not just some community college), meet a lot of people, and then drop out while maintaining those connections. You learn the most in your freshman year, no matter where you go. If you stick around, you might get a couple great teachers, but that won't be worth all the other mediocre to bad ones and unnecessary subjects. Better to take specific classes online from the best of the best, like Schoolism or New Masters Academy.

I usually draw and colour in SAI, just really got used to it, but I export through PS, because I can trim and rescale the end image without losing too much quality. But the problem is that when I port export my project from SAI into PS, I lose lighting, the luminosity effect appears to be much less noticable than in SAI. Any way I can fix his? Copying layer on top of another layer doesn't do anything, even though that kind of technique usually works in SAI.

Do you want to make a living wage? This also weeds out the shit that makes your artistic life miserable. How much would you sell something for?
>>
>>2611384

I played various instruments for about a decade, mostly guitar. If you want to 'master' one, you're probably going to have to drop the other. 2 hours a day is plenty enough to get good at an instrument though, provided you understand how to practice efficiently and you do it every day. You won't be Steve Vai any time soon, if ever, but you'll get good enough to be a serviceable musician after a few years.

I don't really regret dropping music, because it wasn't something I was ever passionate enough about to make something out of. I got pretty good, but every time I'd pick up my guitar, or saxophone, or sit down at a piano, I would feel totally drained and awful. I was forcing myself to do it because I just wanted to be good at something for the sake of it. I enjoy practicing art, so even if I'm older and I'm not very good at it yet, it makes more sense to train in something I can put more serious work into without burning myself out. You'll never get good at something if you don't enjoy putting work into it. Maybe I could've learned to enjoy practicing music now that I'm more mature, but I already had too much negativity and frustration associated with it.

Either way, time is your most precious resource. Most people have a hard enough time putting the hours into one thing. If you really want to master something, you'll need every waking hour of spare time, so I'd say just pick one and devote yourself to it. You can get good at both, but you'll never master both.

You will never be satisfied with your art, because you made it. You will always bear the burdens of its mistakes and problems, no matter how many facebook drones go "wow, amazing work anon!!!"

Stop sitting down with the expectation of doing something awesome. Disassociate your success from the quality of the work, at least while you're doing it. If you do more work, it will get better. When it's time to draw, you should sit down and draw with the goal of "I am going to draw for 1 hour now" and nothing else. You sit down, draw for 1 hour, GREATO SUCCESS.

That's all.

Once you're done, analyse your work so you know the areas you need to focus on improving the most. But don't go back to sitting down to draw something amazing. Just sit down to draw for X amount of time, and focus on doing that.

I've appreciated most threads in which the OP posts themselves per anon's request. I'm considering making my own thread, also providing some clothing props (like shoes, suit-like outfits, etc) if wanted. I have an unconventional face that I would be posting as well, even with nudity.

>and it will be forever challenging until the day you die.

>>
>>2615866
You have absolutely NO idea how light works do you?

There is no "local color" or whatever the fuck you're talking about. The color is determined by how much of the visible light is absorbed by the material and how much get's reflected back out. Which is the color you see.

If the color that get's reflected back isn't present in the light being cast onto the material then it won't be reflected at all... because it wasn't there in the first place.

As for white rim lighting, if you flood the material with enough light it won't absorb enough of any one distinct light waves and so much of it get's reflected off no distinct colors are visible. You get all of them. Hence white.

This is why when you mix two compliment colors it turns to shit. The light hitting the two pigments get's absorbed and what get's reflected is indistinguishable. Technically, in a perfect world, that brown should be neutral grey. Except we don't. Our brain makes shit up on it's own (aka purple) and there are a shit ton of non-visible light that also plays a part in what we see. In fact, MOST light we see isn't part of the visible spectrum.

From practice its best to do the subject first. If you draw the subject first than make the perspective off of the subject you wont mess with the perspective.

Basically set the height, width, an distance of other objects based off of the subject and you wont mess with the perspective. Drawing everything at once will fuck everything up unless you're Kim Jung Gi.

What are some reasons for starting a new tumblr account from scratch?

I want to one day create a more professional and anonymous persona online and the problem with my former tumblr was that I showed it to people irl, and many people online knew who I was. At first, I didn't think that was bad, but I was told in order to move on to something, you have to dissociate yourself with drama and what not. It's discouraging to have some followers to none, and also, I have no artwork to show people irl anymore, unless its from my sketchbook.

>the natural color of a thing in ordinary daylight, uninfluenced by the proximity of other colors.
Which... has nothing at all to do with the person I quoted said.

"why does rim light ignore the local color...." Which means there is CLEARLY more lightthan natural daylight... meaning local color can only be present if there is no other light source, such as rim lighting.

The concept of "local color" is one of lighting. The quoted person implies they thing "local color" is just the color of an objects and not the results of a specific type of light interaction.

This is backed up by the fact most rim lighting is usually depicted in dark scenes... which have no natural white light.

Which of course if you paid the fuck attention you would notice the quotations around local color, as it was obvious anon didn't know what it meant.

All colour is the result of a specific type of light interaction. That's what colour is.
Local colour DOES refer to the colour of an object independent of lighting factors. If I photograph a banana under a red light, it will appear more or less red, but the local colour is still, and always will be, yellow, no matter what insane lighting conditions it's under. To say there is no local colour makes no fucking sense.
The fact that you're too autistic and abrasive to interpret what was being asked is your own failing. Obviously local colour won't be present in a rim light, anon was acknowledging that by the very nature of asking why that is. Obviously he has no idea how light works, that's why he's asking the fucking question, you mongoloid. It's a shame because, to a certain degree, you obviously know what you're talking about, but it's obscured under such needless vitriol, arrogance and absolutely abysmal communication that it's essentially worthless. I already knew all this information and it took like 3 reads to figure out what the fuck you were trying to say.

Ok, there was an image tutorial that talks about using curves to plan out your gradients. While that's great and all, I got really confused.
I was looking through my old warhammer, and this really cool lighting scenario happened, with the nice warm light and the blue skylight. I snapped a picture and got color picking. And what I found was exactly those curves the tutorial was talking about. But what was interesting was the direction the curves went.
Scheme 1 does a J curve, scheme 2 does a U curve, and scheme 3 does a sort of S curve.

When I'm planning out a gradient map, how do I determine which direction I curve or the shape of the curve? I'm not even sure if there's a "correct" answer, but I'd like to hear what you guys have to say.
>>
>>2617611
Blue sky light reflects off of glossy black surfaces really well. So the black curve goes saturated when bending towards the sky light. With the matte Caucasian skin tone the blue color in the skylight is nullified a bit, so it bends towards gray instead.

Scheme 3 is dealing with a bloody colored shadow area due to subsurface scattering so it stays more towards the saturated end.

>>
>>2617597

>>
>>2617625
You explain that just one step further?
So the material the object is made up of determines the curve? So more revlective objects will have a U curve as they can preserve saturation. And more matt objects will have a backwards C curve as they dont preserve saturation?

So reflected light is more saturated on reflective objects and less saturated (more neutral) on matt objects?
>>
>>2617950
I've never thought about this curve idea so I don't know how consistent the curve shape is based on matte/gloss alone.

But a matte object is basically scattering the light more, so the reflections aren't as intense. So the more matte an object is, the less colored light it will generally reflect. The highlights will be less intense and closer to the base color than a glossy object usually.

But in addition to that, the skin is a warm color, which basically means that it is reflecting warm light waves and absorbing cool light waves. I think this is also a factor in why the blue light isn't as saturated on the skin as on the figure.

Black absorbs all light waves, so maybe it isn't as biased? White certainly likes to take on the color of it's surroundings.

A painter might intuitively arrive at these curves anyway, since you don't need to go for a true blue when you are painting near warm colors. A gray will appear blueish when you paint it on peachy and reddish skin. But to get a highlight to look blue on a black object, you probably have to put more blue into it. If you use the same gray as on the skin it might look a bit warmer when on the black object.
>>
>>2617950
Different anon, but I think you may be trying to over generalize. It's not just the material that will affect what colors appear where, but also the local color of the object and the color and intensity of the light sources.

The other issue with your curves is that you're ignoring hue shifts. Scheme 2 isn't just something becoming more saturated, but something going from a warmer color to a cooler color.

>So more revlective objects will have a U curve as they can preserve saturation.
Not necessarily. Remember that we have a blue secondary light. Imagine that the secondary light had the same qualities as the primary light. It would instead look like the start of a U going down and to the left, then reverse it's way back up along a similar path up and to the right.

>So reflected light is more saturated on reflective objects and less saturated (more neutral) on matt objects?
Do you mean bounce light or secondary light sources? Either way it is a light source and the color of the light source relative to the local color of the object will affect what you see in the end.

Let's ignore subsurface scattering and take the example of sunlight on a figure. Ignore blue skylight too. You might find that some shadowed areas are more saturated than others, depending on if they're receiving bounce light from other lit areas of skin. You might have the underside of the chin receiving bounce light from the upward facing planes around the upper chest area. That bounce light is skin colored, amplifying the skin color present in the shadows leading to a more saturated shadow.

Think about what each of your light sources is doing independently, then realize that they additively stack on top of each other to get what you see in the end. You could even use photoshop to isolate the affects of each individual light source, then using various layer modes and opacities stack them together to get a decent approximation of the end result.
>>
>>2615866
Rimlights have a strong specular component. Specular reflections are more 'mirror-like' in that it shows the color of the light source more-so than a diffuse reflection. This means that a blue rim light will still look blue - at least bluer than it would than if it were angled to show off more diffuse than specular reflections.

Accept that you're probably going to make shit drawings today and that's okay. Set a goal that doesn't feel overwhelming, in fact it should sound almost too easy. Set a timer on 10 minutes and during that time just draw stuff from life around your house. Maybe a chair or a soda can or something. Something simple and ugly. Tell yourself that you only need to do 10 minutes of drawing today and pat yourself on the back after you've done it no matter what the outcome. As long as you've done your best effort during those 10 minutes you have accomplished your goal. When you have low motivation and discipline it's best to start small.
>>

what he said >>2618000

Also focus on what you've learned, and what you're learning during the process. Treat it like solving a series of small puzzles and acknowledge every time you solve a piece. And when you struggle, step back and problem solve rather than paralysing yourself by thinking you're just not good enough.
Break things down pragmatically and focus on your own journey of improvement, don't worry too much about the years ahead of you, or the people who are years ahead of you. A thousand mile journey begins with a single step.

By the way, here's that curve idea that I saw in a tutorial somewhere here.
>So the more matte an object is, the less colored light it will generally reflect. The highlights will be less intense and closer to the base color than a glossy object usually.
That makes sense

>But in addition to that, the skin is a warm color, which basically means that it is reflecting warm light waves and absorbing cool light waves. I think this is also a factor in why the blue light isn't as saturated on the skin as on the figure.
Hmm, I get what you're saying. If there was a warm secondary light in place of the blue skylight, then -theoretically- it should become more saturated? I say theoretically as I can't really test it irl at them moment.

>Different anon, but I think you may be trying to over generalize.
I'm using generalization to understand the subject in it's most simplest form. I agree, though, that I am probably going a bit too far.

> You might find that some shadowed areas are more saturated than others, depending on if they're receiving bounce light from other lit areas of skin.
But wouldn't the shadow be brighter? Both the saturation and the value would be high right?

Sorry guys about the million questions. It's just I wish I could turn into a 3d rendering software, zone out, and just render away. There just seems to be so many little variables that go into color and light. In comparison to the rules of straight black and white value.

Anyone used water mixable oils? I paint with wc/gouache mostly, but I love the look of oils, I've just never used them because I don't like the idea of all the messy/toxic solvents and junk. But water mixable oils are on sale at Utrecht so I was thinking of giving them a go, eyeing the Winsor Newton beginner set.
Would standard oil art instruction still generally apply?

Space is also a concern. Stack sheets of wc paper somewhere, no problem, but oils will need to be on canvas right? Maybe it's just not to be right now.
>>
>>2618190
Oil-based and water-mixable dry so close, almost no one can tell the difference. Water Oils do what they say, you can clean and thin them with water. They mix exactly like Oil-based paints and accept the same mediums.

The only thing you're missing out on is the range of colors already out in Oil Paint.
If you're worried about toxins, buy yourself some Gamsol. 100% Mineral Spirits that isn't toxic just really flammable. So I'd recommend investing in a metal trash bin. Turpentine is trash, don't even bother.

Oils can also be used on gesso'd hardboard, cardboard, illustration board, wood, and even metal. As long as it's gesso'd it'll be alright.

>>
>>2618188
>But wouldn't the shadow be brighter? Both the saturation and the value would be high right?
It'll only be a little brighter, but noticeably more saturated. The bouncelight from skin is still substantially weaker than the sunlight hitting the lit areas. The value of the areas hit by bouncelight should still appear darker than the darkest darks in the lit areas (and in scenarios where it isn't, you can make it that way just to have your forms and larger value shapes read easily).

>If there was a warm secondary light in place of the blue skylight, then -theoretically- it should become more saturated? I say theoretically as I can't really test it irl at them moment.

hmm it would be interesting to test. I would expect it to be more saturated on the skin than the grayish tones created by the blue sky light. But probably still not as saturated as the mid tone colors. Depends on how close it is too. Skylight is a very diffused light.

It would also be interesting to get the black figure in there again also. There might be something about black in particular that reflects blue really well. You see it happen on very dark skinned people too. While highlights from skylight on a pale person often seems more like a pink or lavender. In a lot of older languages the word for black and blue were actually the same. Maybe there is something funky with physics going on there.

Was there some sort of agreement that said they had full rights to do what they want with the art once you hand it over?
Does giving them free work allow them to sell it to customers? Would it be possible to negotiate a percentage of the sold art that goes straight to you?

>I did the free work to be able to put it on my resume
First mistake. Never and I mean never work for free. I bet they promised you "exposure" too?

I would say remove the work that they were selling without your permission unless you both can come to an agreement.
Unless you're really close with these guys I personally would consider pressing charges. They took your art for free, selling it, and calling it a "mistake"? If it were me I'd be outraged.

Who cares if they spread bad word, they're probably a local literally-who company anyway. As long as you say that they sold art without permission no one is going to think badly of you. It's their fault, bro.
>>
>>2618351
>some sort of agreement
The contract gave them permission to display the art but not to sell it. They did give me the option of selling it, but I didn't agree to the contract, because it wasn't fair ("get one dollar and we can do whatever we want with your art forever").

>I bet they promised you "exposure" too?
Yes. The statistics they gave me for my artwork indicated millions of hits, but I finally got analytics, and my website hasn't gotten any hits. They also promised future paid work. I only did it because I'd been unemployed, and I thought having something on my resume would be better than nothing, even if I didn't get paid. They're a subsidiary of a multi-billion dollar company, so no one has reason to believe my story over theirs. It would prevent me from ever working with any of this company's branches.

>would consider pressing charges.
It's spare change and not enough to sue over. I am mad. That's the reason I'm asking here, because I can't think objectively about it. Thanks for your thoughts on the matter.

Ok so I did a bunch of testing.
Let me explain this fucking image.

It basically confirms our suspicions as well as a few other things.
Focusing on the Model's Curves, we can see that all of the curves go from Left to Right. The Orange curve being the most saturated, and the orange curve represents the model on the blue shirt. The least saturated curve (purple curve) was a result of the blue skylight, and the only reasoning behind it being so desaturated is because skylight is very diffused which loses a lot of its own strength. The green curve (red reflected light) also shows that even a warm color can be very saturated on a black surface.

Now, moving onto the skin, we have two backwards C curves and an L curve. The most saturated one (green/yellow) is the one with the red reflected light. The next most saturated is the one with natural skylight (light blue). Then the L curve is the one with the reflected blue shirt light (purple).

Basically, this confirms that:
1. The local color of an object determines whether or not the reflected light will be saturated. A warm-colored object with warm reflected light will have more saturation in the shadow. A warm-colored object with cool reflected light will have less saturation (more neutral colors) in the shadow. The opposite for cool-colored object.

2. Dark objects such as this model or any dark-skinned person tend to have very saturated shadows, regardless of what color the reflected light is. The only variable is how strong the source is.

3. Shadows get more saturated. But as you introduce more reflected light, only those that are similar in temperature to the local color determines how saturated the shadow gets. (refer to the red reflected light against the skin vs the cool reflected light/skylight against the skin)

I think because black absorbs all of the colors, it is able to reflect light at a high saturation level. Physics may prove me wrong, but just look at the pictures. The proof is in the pudding.

I look at people drawing using tablets in youtube vids and they do shit i can do with a pen and paper, but on tablet it gets wobbly and the lines dot go where I want. How do i figure out if my tablet works 100% as it should?
>>
>>2618927
Draw fast circles. Draw really slow circles. Draw a straight line very quickly, and draw one slowly (use a ruler for these).

If you see any sharp corners or unusual wobbliness, the problem could be the tablet. If it's a wacom it's often a driver issue. IIRC some drivers are more stable than others, and 6.3-63? might be the most stable.

How does one go from not having any ability in being able to draw to fairly competent in being able to get ideas from the mind to paper?

I've never drawn seriously before. Only embarrassing stick figures. I looked at the sticky but I can't fully understand what the best decision would be.
>>
I'm going through Keys to Drawing and I'm getting really bored. Where can I actually draw and not learn to draw when I take a break from it?

I have a super retarded autistic question. Let's say i have the basics and i'm not new into this art stuff , how the fuck do i develop a style ? Is copying the drawings of my favorite artists (let's say a month for each artist) a way to do it ? Also , when do you stop hating your own style , because i don't like mine yet. I bet you see this question alot but i'm kinda stuck right now. I was thinking of finally writing a webcomic the next year , starting in january but i'm just not satisfied with the way i draw characters etc etc.
>>
>>2619157
Literally , read the sticky , nobody will answer your question , since you can find it there , and we can't help you with the fact that you draw them too far apart. You have to fix that by yourself . Use reference and keep measuring .

If you can get a free pdf, maybe.

I think the intention of the book is to provide pose reference with general mass conception.
As it says, its function is to inspire.
That being said, his tumblr should provide as much use as the book itself, he's been at it for a minute.

best/easiest way to torrent schoolisim classes? I have no money and need to learn from Nathan Fawkes
>>
>>2619618
It's floating about, but hard to find.
Schoolism cracks down on popular torrent sites. They even had vids taken down from cgpeers.
>>
>>2619214
Sounds like you don't have the basics if you ask yourself this question. The studies provided can be used on all things, including how to break down a stylize character.

In animation classes, you're even taught how to mimic other styles (since that's basically what ya' gotta do), but in order to do that you need the basics down, and then some.

If it is this troubling, try taking the self taught Schoolism. Do the Gesture course, then head over the Character Design, and then Advance Character Design to get an idea of how styles work.
>>
>>2619618
RuTracker. The Fawkes videos aren't very good though, try Painting with Light and Color instead.
>>
>>2619728
Its a shame too. They had the sale on recently but even still it was too much of an extra expense
>>2619741
I've got the book but I feel like I need to supplement it with something. I figured the color and light from Nathan would be closest I could get. I was also looking for composition but beggars cant be choosers. Thanks for the help
>>
>>2619763
Just gotta bite the bullet and settle for the self taught stuff. It's good, they even leave a lot of student critiques you can view.
>>
Question for you guys. Do I need to be a good artist to criticize art? Frankly, I've gotten in many small fights on FB, Twitter etc. saying my opinions on their work
>>
>>2620543
You do not have to be a chef to know food tastes bad.

You do not have to be an architect to see something is wrong with the Leaning Tower of Pisa's foundation.

You do not have to be an artist to see that a picture looks bad.
>>
>>2620543

No. It's generally good form not to give criticism unless asked for on social media though.
>>
>>2620543

You need to know what you're talking about. You don't have to be good in practice, but you have to know some theory. And your criticism should provide advice on how to improve, not just point out flaws. Bad artists aren't bad because they can't tell the difference between a good drawing and a bad one, they're bad because being able to actually make a good drawing takes years of theory and practice.
Giving people unsolicited criticism is generally bad form, and the fact that it would ever turn into a fight says a lot about your approach. It takes two to make an argument. If you're giving genuinely useful criticism and people flip out at you, you don't need to respond and should take the hint that you're wasting your time trying to help them. Of course, I have a feeling that's not what's happening, but benefit of the doubt.

Criticise all you want in private conversation of course, but if you're going to make your opinion the artist's problem it had better be worth something, otherwise you're just being a dick.
>>
>>2620543
this>>2620617

on social media (dA, facebook) ppl don't post for critiques, that's reserved for privet places, or forums designed around the idea of critiques (/ic/, crimson daggers)

I am 19 year old guy that wants to fucking do vidya games, and I got a chance to become an intern at a game dev studio making a game right now, NDA and all and if I go through with this I might even go to E3's and all that together with the team later.

The problem is that I am basically shit and the only reason why I have this chance is because I broed up with one of the lead devs and he really likes the fact that I've played through shit like Ultima series and Wizardry even though I am young.

I am complete shit tier, got my wacom like 2 years ago and barely trained in that period and what I did was mostly characters for my tabletop campaigns.

I will start working there somewhere in mid august, and I will mostly do environmental concept art, something that I am basically completely unfamiliar with. On one hand all of this is great because I will finally get motivation to train constantly and experienced artists to help me out, but on the other hand I don't want to go in like a fresh faggot that will slow down any assignment he is given.

Basically what I am asking for is some sort of a crash course on environmental concept art, mostly cities because that's where majority of the game is set. I fully understand that I need to practice my volumes, lighting, color theory etc.. in general for any sort of art but right now I need something that will prepare me for basics.

Should I just practice from pictures of cities? The problem with that is that I also need the speed because it's concept art and lots of assignments a day and composition ingenuity because I will at least partially help with the look and feel of the city by helping other artists that do that...right?

Fuck me, please help me out and guide me on the right path.
>>
>>2621398
Also I have additional pressure because I am in a country that has never produce a single proper vidya in it's entire existence and this might be the first. All of the guys here worked at other dev studios abroad and got enough experience to pull this shit off and on top of that all of them seems to actually love vidya...and they are not casuals.

I want this to work, then I can proudly say that I took part in vidya history for my country.
>>
I wanna go through the sticky and train my fundamentals but I think I don't really need fun with a pencil and keys to drawing. Is it okay to skip them if I have some drawing experience?
>>
Im just not getting gesture.how do i feel it?
>>
>>2621625

Dip your hand in a bucket of opaque substance and slam it against the wall. Lift your hand off the wall and see your result. That is gesture. You felt emotion. You felt anger. You FELT something.
>>
>>2621635
So try and judge the emotion in the pose then? any tips regarding the center line thing
>>
>>2621639
Yes to the first thing.
>center line
Center line is more of a construction thing unless you mean line of action and in that case LOA is more of a 'most importance line'. In all honesty there is always going to be that one pose you cannot lay-in because due to the nature of its perspective. Now noticed I said lay-in and not gesture. You should think carefully on what it means to be gestural vs motionless or naturally posed.

Take the random picture I grabbed as example. You cannot find this pose in this angle in a life drawing session. So all your life drawing techniques for gesture seems to be challenged at this point. This is when you need to incorporate a different plan of approach to "lay-in" the figure rather than stating with a "gesture". To me a gesture is a figure in motion, a clear action. For this picture, I would use a different set of tools to establish the overall picture. In short, there really is no one fool proof plan of attack to get every pose. No one tool. Sometimes you just got to start with shapes and volumes.

Hope that makes sense.

>>2621639
Follow the spine
>>
>>2621668
So gesture regards a figure in the process of moving or doing something. and with poses such as the tits, build from basic shapes? im sorry but im struggling lately.
>>
>>2621685

It's all situational. You'll figure out what to tools to use and when with practice. The thing to take away from my point is
>a figure in the process of moving or doing something. and with poses such as the tits, build from basic shapes?
You won't know unless you begin to draw it. But to stick to one hammer and nail to solve all your construction problems is being an idiot.
>>
>>2621691
okay
>>
Why can i not get any of this fucking shit? its like theres a fucking wall in my brain and the information i try and fucking digest from videos and books is just shit being thrown harmlessly against it. Nothing goes in.
>>
>>2621736
You take a piece of information, then you put it into practice.
Like you see how someone constructs an arm or hands or something right?
You don't wait until you decide to draw the full figure to try it out, you do it then and there just drawing the arms or hands or whatever.

Got anymore like these?

What are some good resources for drawing nature?

what categorization would this type of drawing fall under, and are there any specific ways to practice it? kinda sloppy, half-sketchy but still very recognizable
>>
>>2622060

Specific feedback is very overrated, beginners rarely need it unless they're going way off in the wrong direction. When you're new to something, the things you need to learn are the same things everyone needs to learn, and too broad for someone to individually teach to you.

Before asking for feedback, simply consider if you can find the answer yourself. What can an individual give you that a passive resource can't?

Create a focused question for people to answer. You want to whittle down the options of what people have to say to you, otherwise you risk asking too much and being ignored, or having someone answer and being left feeling overwhelmed and unfocused from the fact that you need improvement in such a broad way. That kind of broad improvement is much easier to gain from a well organised book/etc.

Personally, whenever I try to ask for feedback, I find that just through composing a post, trying to clearly and concisely articulate my problem, that I almost always find myself on the right track simply by 'talking it through with myself', basically analysing the issue and my own work before anyone else has to, and I no longer even feel the need to post anything. And even when I do need to post it, my meeting people half way by trying to be specific generally yields much more fruitful results.

It's not just about presenting your work and having someone tell you what's 'wrong' like a teacher grading a quiz. Hearing you talk about what you were trying to achieve, what you think the problem is etc, makes it a lot easier to see WHY something is wrong an point you in the right direction.
>>
>>2622295
second this?

I really like this style
>>
What does it mean when you show someone a piece of art and they look at it for all of 30 seconds and say one thing about it or say "cool"?
Does it mean the piece is uninteresting/bad and they don't want to say it, or do they just really not care one way of the other? I usually get this response, and it gets on my nerves a little.
>>
So I tried downloading lots of books and look at /ic/ reccomendations but there is so much stuff that I get lost, I am a shitty artist with not much motivation but I would work my ass to improve. So someone has some kind of exercises that I can keep doing to improve? Something that I can keep doing even for hours just to get better
