There are a lot of good artists that use it as an online gallery, is there something im missing?
if it is so bad, what website should someone use instead?

Nothing wrong with it m8.

The community of potatoids is the only shame in deviantart, but the same is true for any online gallery existing.
Well apart Hentai Foundry. that's just objectively shit
Besides dA, our own personal website, and tumblr. Where would you suggest we put art for all to see?
I was curious to know the downsides of using it, because i am by no means close to be considered a professional, and don't want to put the time and money into a personal website yet.
Ive heard Newgrounds is ok.

It drove artists away and the site kinda died.

Artstation is pretty good imo. If you don't get discouraged by every god-like piece in the front page, that is.
It's a site that only rewards the most obnoxious view whoring because it's almost impossible to build an audience there now without it.
The way the front page system works as well severely benefits people who are already popular.

Reddit and imjur, these have worked great for me as you can find niche communities and still get decent views on your work.Honestly art communities are probably the worst place to get exposure for your art, there is so much saturation of content compared to non-art sites.

Instagram in an excellent way to grow a non-artist audience, which is what you should be shooting for if you want a solid online following.
I've also been on the front page of Reddit a few times, and it's an excellent way to funnel people to your social media sites. My first front page hit landed me about 600 Instagram followers when I only had about 300.

Artstation, pixiv (only works if you have something close to an animu style or inspired by one), facebook/instagram is a good source for likes and spreading your stuff & twitter to chat with your art friendos

It's literally in the name.
>Deviant
>art
It's not normal shit. There's furfag shit and all types of bad. Pros use it just to showcase their work.
>>2599618
It's never the website. It's the people who use it.
>>2599618
Good artist are using just because they started using it when it wasn't associated with degenerates. As an artist you need to curate your surroundings. You don't want to be associated with paesants
>>2600190
You also need to learn English as a self-respecting artist.

It became infamous because of the amount of autistic furries and other fucked up fetishists who filled the site with shitty sonic futa porn and other unholy things. But yeah it's not all garbage.
Pic related, it's from BigKneeLover.

Disgusting but disturbing.

Have not been there for more than a few months. The only places I have seen more weird fetishes are sites with hentai and the d board. Ironicly there is a rule that forbids posting actual porn, what a joke. I have nothing against porn it self, but I do not want stuff like this>>2601015

thrown in my face. It is probably hard to filter these things out as most people at first glance would not see it as sexual unless told otherwise, but they ought to get rid of at least the more obvious content.

Does anyone have experience with a purely art content instagram?
>>2599762
I want to get into instagram but it's really limited in resolution and size, also I can't upload shit from PC.

What's bad about DA is that it's has a widespread "you lick my ass I lick yours" mentality, where people are overly nice in hope that you will repay them in the same fashion. On DA the most pandering and dicksucking artists get seen, while honest working, more introverted artist will have a hard time surfacing.
It's a good idea to begin with, and the site is well built, but by now it's too full of underage, mediocre artists with an inflated ego.
