Something's broken, what do I do?
>The site is currently in the alpha phase of development and is being built around us as we compete so sometimes things go wrong. If you ever need any help send me a tweet @LavaFlake or shoot me an email [email protected].
What do we draw?
>Whatever you want. At this point there's no required topic so draw your heart out. Make sure you submit at least a half hour of work or you may get a low effort warning.
What's a low effort warning?
>The goal is to get people to draw every day by turning it into a competition. The low effort warning system is to prevent people from posting last minute, quick sketches when they're feeling lazy. If you receive a warning and it happens again within a month you'll be eliminated.
>This rule has been the cause of a lot of concern amongst newer artists so let me reiterate: this system is to police low effort content and has nothing to do with the quality of the work. New artists are more than welcome.
What happens if I'm eliminated?
>A new Last Artist Standing challenge starts every week. If you get eliminated then get it together and rejoin next week.
How can there be a new Last Artist Standing challenge every week?
>This is a way to let new artists join in and to allow re-entry for the eliminated. Every week a new challenge is started. If you joined on week 1 and make it to week 2 then your daily submission counts for both the first and second Last Artist Standing. If you get eliminated then you're eliminated from both challenges and you'll be able to rejoin next week.
Will I have an advantage if I join later in the week?
>The winner of a Last Artist Standing will be the artist with the longest streak. If you join on day 1 and last until day 85 then you'll have a streak of 85. If there's only one person left in the challenge when you're eliminated but they joined on Day 7 then they'll need to continue on for another week. If they're eliminated before then, you win.

hillo guys. I was part of las few month ago but ended up leaving because I feel my skill was not high enough. I improve a bit but I was wondering what is bet for complete beginner to do? Especially for landscape environments and doing the paintings. Right now I do the anatomy studies of figures with Loomis. Also how does drawing from still life help me draw stuff? Like if I draw the animal skull how does that help me draw landscape or human?

I'm in the same timezone as you. I submit before I go to sleep every day. If I draw earlier in the day then I just wait to submit it, if I don't have free time until night I draw then. It's simple. There's no need to complicate it like that, just set your own deadline like I did.

It might be barely 30 minutes work each day, but still looks like he's hitting the minimum, so there's no rule breaking.
Making minimal progress on the piece each day, sure. Not learning as much or as fast as they could, sure. But idk their situation or anything, maybe half an hour each day is all they can spare and they want to still finish longer pieces, in which case GG. I have to finish a piece in 1-2 days otherwise I lose all interest and just want to end it.

I'm not really sure where to look for "examples" of things given the internet and google in general.
How do I approach drawing natural scenes somewhat closely without cluttering the page with incomprehensible marks, while also getting overwhelmed with how everything sits in space? How do I digest and arrange everything effectively?
Two days ago, I spent some time drawing a small garden pond, with a small "creek" flowing down, with rocks and clumps of leafy plants (some with a lot of stems, others dominated by leaves, stems almost completely concealed). How can I go about defining the body of the foliage, the rocks and their relative orientation along the plane they're sitting on without throwing so many garbage lines down that don't effectively communicate anything?

However, I don't seem much in the way of drawing landscapes and environments, save for a few perspective thumbnails and that one neat lab picture.
Give that a try. Your challenge is to draw some landscapes/locations/environments. It's up to you whether you're doing it from imagination or through study. Your sense of perspective will definitely help you get started.

Cath, after looking over your stuff you really seemed to get better as you continued to grind the mech challenge. Also the things you have redrawn in the past have, in fact, been better then the original attempt.
Your assignment is to start doing this more often, to learn to try something a few times before committing to a finished piece.
Pick pieces you've already made (pic related for example) and redraw them. Redraw at least two pieces. Use smaller sketches or quick studies to help you along and post them as well.

Most of your submissions look like they were done rather quickly and almost all of them are in grayscale. Your humans are almost always very stylized and your rendering is simple. You don't seem to do many studies, and while it's important to have fun too, you won't improve much if you don't study. Therefore, I want you to spend time both rendering and studying human anatomy. Find two photos of nude models (full body, and if you're not comfortable drawing NSFW find a safe pose or a model in underwear) and draw them, using a full range of values. I want you to really spend time on these, so don't just do one per day for only 30 minutes. Spend at least an hour and a half on each one (you'll have to do a bit more to fulfill the challenge's minimum), and do two (one male, one female). It'd be great if you could spend more time on them, since that's not much time for a good full-body study. I understand if your schedule doesn't well accommodate more than 30 minutes per day, but if you can, 3+ hours (at least 52 minutes per day) would likely be more valuable. Color one of them, keeping value, hue, and saturation in mind. Do them digitally, since you seem less comfortable with rendering digitally. Focus on copying the image accurately, and stay attentive. As you draw, think about basic 3D shapes, proportions (how long is the model's arm compared to their torso, where is the elbow in relation to the bottom of the ribcage, etc), light (where is the light source, how do parts of the body cast shadow on other parts, where does light bounce off skin and illuminate other areas), etc. Basically stay focused, don't copy mindlessly without paying attention. Start off with the basic, broad aspects of the image (gesture/shapes/large areas of values), and slowly refine it into a more detailed image.

VitaminNeko, i looked through your older stuff and it seems that Figures, Perpective, Lineart and Character Design are your strongest areas, with Vehicles/Mechas close by.
Looks like you can already tell a story or describe a character/scene with his shape, gesture and expression, however i think that there are two incredibly powerful tools for setting a mood that will benefit you immensely: Lighting (values) and Colors.
So for your challenge i suggest you to:
1) As a warmup, do 3-10 quick master studies (like ~10-20 minutes for each) of the pictures which mood and colors you love (could also be photos). It looks like jmgn posted a completed commission for 119 of his 176 submissions. Assuming that's his average rate of commission completion (also assuming he's posting all of them, and not doing more than one/day) he's averaging 0.68 commissions/day. Crayne, Crayne, Crayne! I know you haven't been here for too long, so I'll do my best to take what I can from the 15 posts you DO have. First I wanna start off by saying that your gesture work looks to be your strong suit. I get a good sense of fluidity and movement with them, so good job, KEEP THAT UP! Also your construction looks quite good as well. Continue to foster those skills. As for what I see that you can improve upon, it looks to be your faces and values. I pulled pic related from your submissions as it demonstrates exactly what I'm talking about. I noticed that you HAVE been making efforts to improve these areas, so that's good. My critique for you regarding your values is, definitely try to keep things as simple as possible. What I mean by that is, you should work with as little values as you can right now. Pic related in particular has a LOT of changes in value ALL over the place. Try painting something with 2-4 values. Focus on contrast and when you should and should not add areas of heavy detail. Remember that areas of rest are as equally as important as areas of heavy detail. Try to think more in the realm shapes for creating shadows, rather than smoothing everything out and blending ever single shadow into the face. This can often just make your piece look like melty ice cream and can take away from your overall focal point. Contrast is extremely important as well, remember to always be keeping it in mind. Based on your pic related, contrast looks to be a big issue. Moving on to the actual head construction. Proportions are off in a lot of your heads that I've seen, and the face often looks flat. I recommend the Reilly Method for head construction and for learning the planes of the face. This method pairs nicely with studying values, because the planes are given to you already, all that's left to do is fill them in with the appropriate values based on a lighting scenario. You are focused rather on drawing now and your few lineless pictures shows lack of experience in painting area. So here is 2 exercise, both is paint from ref (use something with good colors and light, photos, movie screenshots, good artist works):
1) take your ref, turn it to grayscale (optional), and then try to paint it in 5-6 gray tones, use only hard brushes with 100% opacity, be loose.
2) similar to first but with color, use big brush size and small amount of strokes, do not fall into render, make it simple.

So, make a few of both and I think your paintings will be better.

You don't have to stay in LAS because I said so dude, I just think if you quit you'll regret it. Lurk other threads on /ic/ and you'll find a bunch of people who gave up on art or didn't have time for it for one reason or another and stopped completely for a couple of years, and then they come back to it and forever regret how they wasted all that time and could have made so much progress.
I barely made anything for about a year and a half after uni because I was spending all my time working to pay all them bills and shit that living alone brings. If I'd made more time for drawing and painting then maybe I would have "made it" by now, or at least be getting commissions.
A break might be good for you though if you feel like you're stuck in a rut and not making progress or enjoying anything. Maybe take some time out and just chill, and then after a week or two look for what made you want to be an artist in the first place, what kinds of films or books or games or whatever make you want to draw and create things yourself. Take a break, recharge, and then come back with a clearer direction to go in rather than it feeling like you're just treading water in the same place, if that makes sense.
Also the fact that you're posting here asking for someone to tell you to quit shows your heart isn't entirely in it I think. Putting your fate into someone else's hands either to avoid hard decisions yourself or as a cry for help/attention. It really is up to you dude. I could crit what kind of things you should be studying and trying to do instead of those semi shaded heads every day but if you need a break first then maybe we can talk about that when you start up again? I figure that there's probably some logic in their mind that relates it that I'm just not picking up on. Especially since once I got called out for an unrelated submission when I thought it was obvious. For more unflexible, easy topics like "cloth" you could easily tell if it fits or not, but for really vague ones like "visionary" I just give them the benefit of the doubt.
Also, I understand the suffering of the topic challengers so if they don't want to put a lot of effort into making their submission obviously related (or try to sneak an unrelated submission), I get that.

I have seen your last 180 submissions and I have concluded that your art suffers from many problems, but since this is a short challenge, here's what I think would benefit you:
Study the bones, muscles, proportions and general anatomy of the head and face. Bonus points if you do it in both traditional and digital. Don't pay attention to rendering, just the structure and proportions.
AND
It seems like you are interested in painting, so render a cube, a sphere and a cone in 3d space in as many different materials and lighting schemes as you want. Try to pay attention to the edges. Bonus points if you only use hard round.
