The real answer is that it's mostly me just running with an initial shape or interesting feature and trying to get it to work. I've also done a fair amount of designs in that same world, so I reuse a lot of memes from previous designs like the skin drapes and distorted anatomy.

but i haven't really looked at the sites so idk if any of the themes are viable for an art blog.

personally i would recommend something easy to navigate, especially through tags(if you draw stuff with a lot of different subjects), and something that shows off multiple posts at once without looking like a cancer premade overly-complex hipster theme(if that makes sense)
keep the colors simple as well, avoid tiled/complex backgrounds

Is DrawCrowd good for getting feedback?
Tumblr is the best for whoring, but offers zero feedback. So are Pinterest and Instagram.
dA is best for storing your art since it's size limits are stupid high and it allows PNG. But the users are fucked up and don't offer feedback either, just weirdness.
Facebook is ok for both but has way too many limits.

use a bigger brush and more paint

try to be more intentionally calligraphic with your stokes, with gouache it's more of a pain to smooth them out than it is with oils so you have to be intentional

You should maybe study necks a bit, the neck here is much too stiff and resembles a pole rather than an organic bodypart. The contour of the neck is perhaps a bit too straight. The face's features are decently placed with proper value locations, though, Keep it up :)

I thought I might aswell ask here.
I am in the process of building a web portfolio, or rather would like to get started on this.

I have a very precise Idea of what it should look like and am able to code it myself. The catch is I don't want to deal with buying web space/FTP server etc. but would get a domain later down the line.

So, I made my own research and tumblr seems pretty good but I refuse to believe it is the be all and all for this kinda stuff.
All sorts of community page are out of the question. For example DA, Behance, etc.
I want the portfolio to be as isolated as possible that it looks like a personal website.

Now, wordpress is weird. Mainly because I feel to restricted in what I can do even though, theoretically I should be able to customized at will for no costs. But the whole site just puts me off.

Blogger is google. Does not work for me. I refuse to use google services since 2009.

Then there are all sorts of other less known blog-tools but they don't feel polished at all.

Tumblr is really the only one so far that easy to use and maintain later with quick and uncomplicated uploading processes. ALSO the most important I can build my page/theme entirely from sratch or improve an existing one without much of a hassle and I have the freedome to remove all hints that it might be a tumblr page, even the link itself.

Soooo... is this is?
Its tumblr after all in the end it feels subpar. I dunno.

Maybe I am just to much of a cheap faggot to just go and host my own shit.

You could try making a Wix site. Wix has a huge array of customization available, but Tumblr is probably still probably better in the end just for the large user base.

Let me give you an overly nice "collegy" critique
You have a good foundation in color theory. I love your choices with the "Peridot Painting." The basic coloring version especially highlights your capabilities in that field. I'd suggest improving on your rendering methods, as the final version of the piece is weaker in a few ways. Though your color choice was great, the shading style still makes the textures come off as muddy. I'd also recommend working on your construction, as I'm finding a few perspective and anatomical issues. Normally I'd also recommend that you focus on improving the line-work, but since it is a style choice I suppose that might be going just a little bit off-path in your particular case. Regardless I still suggest mastering multiple line-art techniques: it is an important skill to hold whether or not you use it too often, and it never hurts to pick up multiple drawing styles. Otherwise, I simply suggest improving yourself in the same way we all do, through a steady pace with increasingly rigorous practice. I'd love to see your improvement over the course of a few months, as I'm seeing a lot of potential from you.

Ill do some research on your critiques and try and learn as much as i can with them in mind. My shading is a bit avoiding 3d shape, but In that piece it was intentional as I felt a real persons shading would be more complex than basic shapes, but none the less, ill start trying to shade with 3d in mind. I have already started practicing with my lineart, and will continue to do so. Additionally, does anyone have anything that can help me improve with perspective? I try to make my scenes somewhat interesting by adding a curve in the land or extreme uses of distance, but i will also try and improve on that. Thank you guys so much!

I don't update very often cause I draw everything traditionally and I don't have a scanner and I want it to still look nice so I only post loads of stuff when I get the opportunity to scan my stuff and that's not so often.
I'm more active on instagram, but I use it for personal stuff too, so I'm not going to promote that on an anonymous chinese cartoon forum.

This is really weird:

I had an illustration garner 7000+ notes in the past few days, yet it has only yielded about 37 new followers. The post had obviously links to my page and a call to action (ie. Follow me @____!), but still. It doesn't make any sense.

In contrast, I had 2 posts on the Radar about 2 weeks ago, both getting about ~3000 notes each and it brought in 550+ followers to my Tumblr with some noticeable spillover to my Instagram.

Just thought it was strange. By the way - I think submitting your work to http://art.tumblr.com increases the chances of your work being featured on the radar. My two illustrations that were on the radar were featured on this site first. I recommend submitting your work to lots of different sites, including this one.

I'm curious, how long have you been at it with tumblr?

My blog is much smaller (around 500 followers) but I notice pretty much the same trend. Certain submissions can do really well but not really garner many followers, and I haven't really hit a point where my blog has 'taken off' (my follower count generally increases around 30-50 month to month ever since I started, and I was definitely a lot worse back then).

Part of this, I acknowledge, is from my lack of skill and broad appeal, but did you hit a point where you just got a fuckton of followers? At my current rate it would take me several years to hit 9k.

I made my Tumblr in the summer of 2014, I think. After the first year, I think I had around 1000 followers. Once I started gearing my stuff to be more shareable, things started picking up. I don't think skill necessarily equates to popularity, but I think the other thing you mentioned - broad appeal - that's what really hits home. Making things that other people connect with in some relate-able way can make people want to share it. My blog is http://ronanlynam.tumblr.com . I really think half of my followers are inactive though - the average post gets around 200-400 notes.

Some things that can bring in followers:
+ Submitting regularly to all the large art blogs (eatsleepdraw, fuckyeahillustrativeart, art, etc.) is a good way to basically get a very large blog to reshare your stuff
+ Posting your stuff to Reddit is a total gamble as it'll probably fly under the radar, but landing on the front page can give you a really nice boost, even if it's the front page of a smaller subreddit.
+ Tagging well can sometimes help. Generic art tags won't help much, but subject matter & colors are solid tags to use. Remember: only the first 5 tags are shown under searches.
+ Fan art can definitely work wonders for you, since it's very relatable to a large amount of people and - in addition to regular art blogs - you can submit them to all the Tumblrs based on that fandom.

I should note that my medium sized following has made no noticeable effect on my life besides just being nice to have. Maybe it has caused a few people to buy prints, but beyond that - not much.

If you're looking for an alternative to Tumblr, I highly recommend Instagram. It's still very, very popular and I find it to have a higher level on engagement from fans than other sites.

There isn't, except time. I think it's important to adapt your work to each platform the best you can though, which takes more time. For example, I've found that Instagram responds better to art prints of digital work than just throwing up a any old JPG straight from PS. Another example is I find Tumblr responds better to photosets, perhaps showcasing WIP's or detail of a final drawing. Tumblr also loves GIFs, so perhaps animating a subtle element to your drawing can help increase how shareable it is.

I find it useful to set aside a time each week to prepare content for a few different sites all at once. It goes by faster, IMO. Scheduling work to automatically be posted is also very helpful. Tumblr has this built in.
