>Thread study: Try to draw/paint the opening or any other following images.
Feel free to post your original works as well if you're trash.

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

I don't understand why this is so horrible. The face looks ugly and wrong, but I get the same result from tracing in photo shop and free-handing, so the problem is deeper than just accurate lines.

I dont know what I should be tackling to make this look right. The picture of the pencil 1 is smaller than my thumb print and that is why the lines look so thick.
>>
>>2584828
Why so small? Go read the Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain to understand what you should at least be looking for. Or, since you're stuck on this drawing, try some shading.

i just watched a video telling me i should use a lot of lines to sketch it out and not commit to just 1 line? i thought this is what you call chicken-scratching and is generally looked down upon?
>>
>>2584847
My 2 cents: try to draw lines confidently and gracefully. If you have to draw multiple lines to find the right one, no big deal. It looks bad when beginners are afraid to attempt a long line, so they just draw a bunch of tentative little lines, which ends up with a fuzzy looking result.

fucking hell man i just cant get out of symboldrawing, how did you guys do it?
>>
>>2585028
Try studying things you aren't used to seeing, or things that you don't already have symbols for in your head. The more familiar with something you are in the real world (such as eyes) the more you will have a mental picture of what it's "supposed to look like" interfere with how it actually looks.

Obviously you still need to study human faces properly, it's really hard and takes a lot of time and practice. Best to just break things down and then build them back up.

But you need to learn how to draw what you see. Which means more time looking at the subject than the paper. And making lines that "feel" wrong, but fit in line with how it looks. That doesn't always mean that what you draw will be correct, but it will probably be closer to correct. And getting better is just making less and less of the same mistakes. Sometimes even making new mistakes.

Eventually you'll be able to stop bumping into walls so much and occassionally pin the tail on that donkey. Keep trying m8.

So I tried this, attempted to do something different than my usual study habits.

I looked at the image and attempted to study it and take in what I saw and mentally note all the things I could about the pose. Then I tried to do the gesture, without looking back at the ref. Then I went back and studied again, trying to note things, then I did a sketch over the gesture. Then did that one more time. This was a lot harder for me than just constantly glancing at the ref every other second, but it was suggested by an artist who is *much* better than I.

So I guess I'd like to know the following
1) is there a chance?
2) should I keep going with this one or try it again?
3) plz rip to shreds / critique

It does come down to accuracy. Even you're traced copy is inaccurate. Her jaw line doesn't consist of one smooth continuous line. There are definite changes in direction that can be mapped out. In my study I tried to emphasize the edges and shapes you don't seem to be seeing. For instance, in your traced copy, you used two lines to define the depression in her upper lip. I see the left side of the depression catching light and the other side in shadow. Look for specific shapes and try to define their boundary through line as closely as you can.

First of all, I'd suggest that you study subject matter far simpler than portraits for now. You should study something like still lives so you can focus on improving fundamental skills you need to work on such as seeing the relationships between shapes, perspective, finding angles, etc. At the moment, having to worry about anatomy and drapery will only be a distraction that you're unequipped for. On the right of my redline I tried showing the arrangement of shapes and their spacing that I think of while I do a study. I think you did an okay job at drawing the individual features, but it's their incorrect scale and placement that makes your study fall apart.

What sort of help do you want exactly
>>
>>2585496
Well my biggest worry is that I might continue symbol drawing without realizing it. So my question would be if I'm still symbol drawing.
>>
>>2585500
Yes, you are. You are still drawing outlines of things. You also need to work on your line confidence. The right side of the page, where the cheek is? You need to not do that.

You need to construct your drawing before getting into the outlines. Line up the eyes, line up the nose, line up the mouth. I think I might see remnants of attempts to do that but you need to keep practicing that. Next you need to start drawing the head as a 3d shape first.

It's hard to tell if you are using pen or pencil from the picture, but you should really work on drawing as lightly as possible, just light enough that you can tell you put a line there. Then when you are sure of the line, draw it clearly and confidently and darker.

Go watch some proko videos or look up the other people who are constantly recommended. If you look at their techniques carefully you will see that they are describing 3d forms with their sketches, then pulling the outlines from that information. You should do the same.
>>
>>2585511

Video lessons work far better for me but its when books have pages of nothing but words, and I have no idea what it is trying to teach me.

Use a higher opacity 100% hardness default round brush, or a high opacity textured brush, and get better at picking colors. You're using black and shades of tan/brown at low opacity, so they're killing the other colors, that's why it looks muddy.

Also your face is horribly unsymmetrical, flip the canvas horizontally occasionally to spot the errors quickly. You can make a custom hotkey for it.
>>
>>2585056
That depends on what you're after. You could call it done now, or you could add details and color everything until it's photorealistic. You said it's for an animatic, I'm assuming that means it's for preproduction and will only be seen in-house, in which case I'd call the piece done. If you plan on creating some kind of refined animatic as your final product for public viewing, you'd probably want to make sure the level of detail matches the backgrounds for the other scenes so there's no jarring transitions for the viewers.
>>

Use a reference or imagine in your mind what the light would look like bouncing off the object in question.

Human skin has subsurface scattering, light shines on and THROUGH the skin, picking up color from under the surface on its way back out. That means skin around the light-source is often a more saturated color (not necessarily lighter or darker).

Light picks up colors as it bounces around (or rather, loses colors) that's how we see color. This means differently colored objects near each other often end up bouncing color off each other.

It helps to always remember that you're not drawing the object itself, you're drawing the way light information interacting with the scene reaches your eye.

TL;DR: It depends on the situation.

>skin around the light-source
Skin around a bright highlight/rim-light/back-light*

try the vilppu drawing manual

it has pretty good step by step exercises. but desu it's a bit advanced

i would go

1. drawing on the whatever side of the brain

2. draw a shit ton of still lives

3. draw a fuckton of self portraits

4. enroll in a live-model figure drawing class

5. read vilppu drawing manual

How many of these have you drawn? Draw it again. And again. Until it looks close to or like what it is supposed to. This is not something you personally are just gonna get easily anon. It will take literally hundreds of these to get it down and be able to do it well. You have posted 3 so far. Do another 10. Go do something else. Then do another 10. You can obviously see your mistakes, use that knowledge to correct it. Don't accept a mistake if you can see it. Do it again and fix it. This is how you will progress.
>>
>>2585847
you got it boss!
>>
>>2585828
Do you want to keep working on it?

Either fix it or Polish it.

Fix: them hands, those scraggly lines. Add some legs and a background. Firm up those forms.

Polish: Pick some colors, pick a direction for a light source or multiple light sources. Start coloring and rendering with that info.

Don't want to keep working on it? Go do something else.
>>
>>2585858
To be honest, I have no idea how to polish it, render it, even colour it. I tried colouring and it literally looked garbage and better the way it is now. So i have no idea where to begin after just the initial sketch and was hoping someone can lead me with a direction.
>>
>>2585865
This where you are either going to have to take the plunge and experiment or start researching how to render and color. No one's gonna be able to tell you exactly what to do with that piece.

Go look up color theory it will get you started on picking appropriate colors. Color it. If you want to keep going start studying chiarroscuro and how to shade things. Use that research to shade it.

Well, there are a lot of things I do to get the lines good. For the brush its a mixture of 2 that I had to make. Pic related are the brush settings. I usually sketch at like 12 flow and go up to like 70 or so when doing the dark lines. I also use a soft eraser setting to get rid of the sections I don't want. You can also watch some videos on CtrlPaint to help stuff out.

Drawing, especially as a beginner, is going to be really disheartening. If you let it get to you often you aren't gonna make it. Just have realistic goals and expectations (along with discipline) and don't worry on getting good "fast" - just aim for being better than last month.

>>
>>2585976
No problem man! I tried to do this quickly to give you an idea of the kind of still life I suggest you should be doing. I think they're useful in clearly exposing what you need to work on. For instance, I notice that I generally made the scale too small and got certain alignments off such as the mug and the glass bottle. These problems are a lot more difficult to figure out when dealing with a portrait study, where anatomy becomes a factor. The skills you'll be working on are what you'll need to do a solid portrait study.
You shouldn't be discourage by becoming aware of what you need to work on. The only way to improve is to identify your faults and fix them.

Here are drawings I need in order to train on drawing women. Posted few of them on others threads but I would like more critiques.
I may be drawing since years I never took the time to really study. I'm just starting to finally draw women.

The image is shit, but I can't do better, everyting is classified by creation order

first thing I noticed was the shoulders look too big and muscular. you have comic book/wonder woman proportions in general, i think you should draw hands and feet smaller, and heads bigger. keep in mind that breasts point away from the spine, not forward

women are really delicate and frail. even when they are muscular they look child like

Is Iterative Drawing useful in learning how to draw or is it a meme?

>>2586809
Depends. It helps people with lower attention spans because it resets the train of thought while still giving them mileage, but for higher attentions span people like me (not saying that likes it's any better or worse, just different) it's better to study in depth because zoning in is easier for us.

>don't use symbol drawing

so what the fuck is symbol drawing?
>>
>>2587212
Don't confuse using foundation guidelines with drawing an oval with a circle in it and calling it an eye.
>>
>>2587212
Mistake #1- It's not a circle it's a sphere.

Mistake #2 - "Symbol drawing" is drawing what you think something looks like. Not what it actually looks like. Using forms to construct a proper drawing is using the knowledge of what the thing actually is and the space it takes up in 3 dimensions to your advantage and working off of that. This is instead of working off of what your brain thinks is there. Eventually you understand enough you no longer need it at all and can just construct without using these forms at all, but for most people in this thread (myself included) that's a long ways off.

But yeah, this is a meme, take it or leave it. If it doesn't work for you by all means find your own way to do it.
>>
>>2587212
you are supposed to use shapes (not really cicrles, more spheres), to grasp the concept of drawing 3d and to ease poses, gestures, shading and lightning.
sympol drawing is when you have the idea in your head that an eye looks like this. it does. it has a circular iris, it has lashes and the eye-opening is roughly shaped like this. but an eye on a face, with angles and lightning NEVER looks like that irl. especially since symbol drawing uses outlining. that's unrealistic.

Absolute newbe here, Aside from fixing symbol drawing, angles and proportions (which I believe that can be fixed with practice. and anatomy and perspective studying) I think that my lines are very lackluster. What should I do to fix them?

Drawing on the right side of the brain, Keys to drawing. Work through them all.

What if I am poor? or is the latest book (and not the website) just fine?
I know very little about the practicalities of art, but I want to take a more technical approach and end up as a realistic artist, I love other stiles tho, but I am very attracted to realism in the human body.

No, the ref I used was a frame from the show Naked and Afraid. I work in television, and one of the benefits is access to tons of content. And I work over night, so when things are dead I just turn things on and draw. I could find the ref if looked for it. Maybe I'll post it tonight.

I was very tired last night but are you saying that I don't always have to use shapes to draw stuff? I hope that is what you are saying. I've always been very literal when someone tells me to do something. For example when I had started my new job, my team lead told me I needed to do something "THIS" way. It took forever, was very inefficient and tiresome. Until one day my coworker said to me that you don't need to do what they said word for word. It made things a lot easier. Everyone keeps saying that you have to draw using shapes and honestly, the stuff I draw without laying down """"3d shapes"""" look better than with.

Draw what you see.
>>
>>2587828
But I feel like I am drawing what I see, then I use my stupid fucking hand and it doesn't look like what I see.
>>
>>2587831
You're drawing what you think you see.

Look for example at where you put the shirt collar, it's not even close. Don't think "Now I am drawing the eye", just draw all the shapes in it.

I tried again, just drawing the shapes rather than trying to construct. Better I think but everything comes crumbling down when I start to draw things like the eyes and later on when I realise I made something slightly too long and now the entire face is broken.

Use construction before putting down the shapes if you have trouble with keeping things on scale.

Took a crack at the same reference.
>>
How much are you d/ic/ks drawing per week?

No lies.
>>
>>2587903
Between seven and twelve hours. It really should be much more, but it's hard to bring myself to do much of anything each day once I get home from my soul-draining call center job.
>>
>>2587870
You're still drawing what you think you see. Look at the chin area especially, you can see how different it is.

Get a new reference, flip it upside down, try again. Shapes only.
>>
>>2587915
>>2587870

Adding onto my post here, look at the far eye, you draw it completely, but on the reference you can't see the very end of it, because the head is angled away from the camera. You get to certain parts and go "it's an eye, draw these shapes, but they have to look like an eye cause they're really eyes".

Just shapes. Don't worry about it looking like a person, just work on being able to translate lines to paper.
>>
>>2587913
7-12 hours is alright though when you're also doing something else and ain't a complete NEET. How's the progression, how long you been cracking this at?
