I want to commission some artwork and I would like to browse through a bunch of portfolios to see whose styles I like. How is this generally done? I'd like to avoid trawling through terabytes of Sanic fan art and furry porn if possible.

How much are you willing to pay?

What do you want made?

Anywhere from a couple hundred to a couple thousand. I am looking for an illustrator for abridged books.

As much as I hate to say it, a site like Upwork.com fits what you're looking for. Upwork is a site where you post your project description and freelancers make their pitch. They'll all have portfolios so you'll be able to scan through many people and see who will work best.

Upwork isn't without it's problems though. For freelancers, it's a race to the bottom. There aren't that many quality illustrators on it and third-world illustrators will undercut others for the gig. You'll be able to hire someone for very cheap, but don't expect the best results.

Other than that, I recommend simply reaching out to any artists whose work you like online. Anyone worth working with should have a website and email to inquire.

If you're willing to work with someone on /ic/, you can post an email and you can definitely find someone here.

Remember also about Behance and sites like Concept Art.org

God damn - can't believe I forgot about that. Dribbble too. Dribbble tends to be a bit more on the higher quality side.

>ConceptArt.org
Unless OP is looking for a scifi/fantasy artists, they won't really fit the bill.

Any suggestions for discovering artists whose work I like? Blogs, for example? When I lived in Boston I had an RSS feed from the Weekly Dig (a Village Voice-like local paper) and found some gems that way. But that was a long time ago.

I recommend following popular art magazines/collectives/galleries on social media. Juxtapose & Hi-Fructose are solid choices. Check out Mondo Gallery out of Austin, TX - they're a personal favorite of mine. Anytime something catches your eye, you can usually find a link to their work/blogs.

I'm aware that Imgur.com will stop allowing adult images since 15th of May. I'm taking actions to backup as much data as possible.
