Something's broken, what do I do?

>The site is currently in the alpha phase of development and is being built around us as we compete so sometimes things go wrong. If you ever need any help send me a tweet @LavaFlake or shoot me an email [email protected].

What do we draw?

>Whatever you want. At this point there's no required topic so draw your heart out. Make sure you submit at least a half hour of work or you may get a low effort warning.

What's a low effort warning?

>The goal is to get people to draw every day by turning it into a competition. The low effort warning system is to prevent people from posting last minute, quick sketches when they're feeling lazy. If you receive a warning and it happens again within a month you'll be eliminated.

>This rule has been the cause of a lot of concern amongst newer artists so let me reiterate: this system is to police low effort content and has nothing to do with the quality of the work. New artists are more than welcome.

What happens if I'm eliminated?

>A new Last Artist Standing challenge starts every week. If you get eliminated then get it together and rejoin next week.

How can there be a new Last Artist Standing challenge every week?

>This is a way to let new artists join in and to allow re-entry for the eliminated. Every week a new challenge is started. If you joined on week 1 and make it to week 2 then your daily submission counts for both the first and second Last Artist Standing. If you get eliminated then you're eliminated from both challenges and you'll be able to rejoin next week.

Will I have an advantage if I join later in the week?

>The winner of a Last Artist Standing will be the artist with the longest streak. If you join on day 1 and last until day 85 then you'll have a streak of 85. If there's only one person left in the challenge when you're eliminated but they joined on Day 7 then they'll need to continue on for another week. If they're eliminated before then, you win.

but if it's token loss, it should take into account the state of the user at when the cheating occurred, so if they cheated when they would otherwise lose a token then it should be a token loss, but if they cheated when they would have died then they should be treated like they really did "die" back then (all the challenges up until that point invalidated)

That's the one fatal flaw of the community. Now that names are attached, a lot of users are afraid if they ask for crit they'll be memed to death in future threads, which has really only been an issue for one person so there's no reason to worry.

Posting your work is very dangerous. There was a pretty new artist named fuckyoumang who came into this thread asking for help and he just got memed into oblivion. People were insulting him left and right and they started doubting that he even spent 30 minutes on his art. The poor guy ended up streaming his entire process and people still hated on him, they eventually reported his submissions and got the poor fella eliminated from las. He also couldn't draw/paint women well, and the Sistine Chapel looks really weird up close due to the illusionistic elements used to compensate for the vaulted ceiling. Only use textures when they match the detail level of the rest of the piece, and not to define the detail level. Filters can be somewhat useful for some specific effects if applied subtly enough that you can't tell one was used at all.

Similarly, tracing can be helpful for beginners to unlearn symbol drawing, and photo-bashing can be a great way to set-up a thumbnail. The stuff you draw without reference is all pretty heavily stylized, nothing wrong with that if its for a project but you don't wanna internalize that; you haven't done a serious anatomy study yet

Sorry to have hurt you anon, but your anatomy needs work. If you want to learn and improve, anatomy books are an okay option. I like Atlas of Anatomy for the Artist by Steven Rogers Peck, but I hear really good things about Anatomy for Sculptors by Uldis Zarins and Sandis Kondrats.

I would very much like a critique of the first two images in my submission. Both are works in progress, but fresh eyes could still be helpful.

The first one, which is also the thumbnail, is what I'm doing for the Ounce of You challenge. It's a character design that I did a while ago that hasn't been used for anything anyway. I still have to finish the "hair," feet, shoulders, faceplate, and hand. I feel like the sword is a little wonky, so if anyone could help with that specifically, I'd be very grateful.

The second one, the bug guy, is my first draft for the inner critic thing. Don't really need a critique, but I would just like to know what bug he reminds you of.

I did try to use reference for the second one, but I found it much harder than I would have thought to find a good photo, and it was just a 5-10 minute sketch that I inked.

Friendly suggestion: use a broader and/or rougher brush to throw in your flat color faster. You're spending a whole lot of time on a level of accuracy you really don't need. Alternatively try using the lasso and fill tools.

Thanks a lot for looking through my stuff! My life goal is getting invited to work as a concept artist/illustrator in US (Blizzard is a childhood dream) and also do some animation for personal projects.
So with your suggestions i adjusted my schedule like this:
1) 30 min of studying Hampton every day and 1-2 hours of applying what i've learned. After finishing him switch to Constructive Anatomy (or possibly learn from both of them at the same time).
Also figure drawing classes two times a week (1 for quick gestures and 1 with 2-hour long pose).
2) Stop polishing turds and switch to lots of thumbnails and sketches, every day just to build looseness and explore ideas (maybe with pens/brush pens instead of digital?).
3) Break from the comfort zone and spend 1 day a week focusing on hard surface stuff (desu i was ignoring them because i'm not really interested in vehicles, but maybe i'm just too close minded and need to at least give them a try. Maybe base my designs on animals/insects).
