What is your favorite work of art?
Can be classical, modern and so on.
I'll start;
Ezekiel's Vision
>>2568781
THICK

I
C
K
Hard to pinpoint 1 in particular, but this one is up there.
Probably this one
>>2569082
edgy
>>2569192
How?
Karamazov.
The frame is great too, but I couldn't find a good image.
>>2569192
doesn't matter though
>>2569222
Thats Klimt, yes? He is amazing.
is it cheating if I consider this to be one work of art composed of many?
(chose a few of my favourite parts)
dem bois
The one where he kills his son
>>2569567
for me is the one where he eats his son
I'm a sucker for crossovers and school of Athens will always have a place in my heart.
I also like the one where Kronos is eating his child.
>>2569548
What is this?
>>2569979
What is reverse image search?
>filename??
Mucha's Slav Epic
Rob Evans "Refuge"
I just love the atmosphere he creates here. My other favorite would have to be Ivan the terrible killing his son by Repin
David with the head of Goliath.
Caravaggio painted himself as Goliath, the story behind is interesting.
>>2569639
>insert muslim men joke
>>2570298
You got those roles reversed senpai
"Golden Stairs" by Burne Jones. Super evocative, harmonious, purely aesthetic while having this gentleness about it and sense of mystery, bordering nearly on occult.
>>2570397
Also from contemporary: Takashi Murakami "Tan Tan Bo".
Third place would be probably Podkowiński's "Szał uniesień" (Frenzy of Exultations)
>>2572102
Prob Muddy Alligators
Rubens
>>2572114
yes
>>2569222

>>2572120
i like his boats a lot more than the alligators

Mind that I'm a man who can't make up his mind so it changes quite often, but I've always had feelings for this one. Seems really nostalgic for some reason, makes me think about good summer days spent with my family- holidays and such, Kind of weird considering I've never been to France, or actually any place even remotely similar to this one. The power of art I guess
>>2572061
Francis Bacon, good shit ma nigga
>>2568717
I can't pick my most favorite work of art, too difficult and so many options.
But I do consider this pic as one of my favorites.
>>2572098
Wyeth. He's beast.
I'll post a few of my favourites.
>>2572836
More Mark Tansey.
>>2572838
>>2572840
>>2572843
And finally, this.
>>2569957
THIS, cavemen were better artists than us, they got the gesture and everything right, no need for values or rendering, this is the purest form of art
>>2572355
Nigga go watch Ghost in the Shell
>>2569084
i can't hold back my laughter every time i see this
Most paintings/ pencil work by Mucha. If I had to pick one, though, it'd be Summer from his Seasons collection.
I wish I could paint with gold leaf but I won't buy it for myself because I'd probably screw something up and end up wasting it
>>2572900
Those weren't drawn all at the same time. They would draw one, then another on top when they returned to the cave another time. They're built up and overlapped over long periods of time.
>>2573467
You can use imitation gold or copper leaf to practice your technique.
>>2569548
I like Mucha's anime art better
>>2568717
Analysis of this painting
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rKhfFBbVtFg
As a Finn, I will always have a soft spot for our painters of romantic era.
The von Wright brothers were indeed skilled, their skills matched that of their peers or even surpassed (maybe biased), but since they happened to live in a remote northern corner of the world, they did not become very famous
>>2574815
I should add that by their peers I mean other painters of their time, who specialized in birds
>>2572456
Holy shit how have I never heard of this. Thanks anon.
>>2568830
Zak Smith?
>>2572100
Seriously? A template human model with some fancy textures and materials rendered in keyshot with a preset hdr? That's your favorite?
>>2575895
>>2572936
>overrendering
That's only when a piece has high contrast detail on every inch; in this case those pieces are balanced by areas of detail next to areas that are more simple or less contrasted.
I love Edward Austin Abbey, but I rarely see others bring him up
Zorn, Sargent and Repin are current favs atm
>>2575897
fucking nice
>>2575610
who?
>>2575610
gigeresque
>>2575626
Yes, Sir.
>>2572237
ingenious use of color
>>2572247
that rendering is sublime.
>>2569084
as expected /ic/. but can someone clear up the lore behind merc.wip? who made it? how did it become a meme? what even is the joke behind it?
>>2576659
You are my nigga
Killer surrealism before surrealism was even a thing
>>2576681
iirc, some anon posted it in response to the ever prolific "post your work" during an argument, and for whatever reason it took off. I don't remember if it was actually the artist of merc_wip himself, or if that anon simply took some random person's work and posted it to shitpost.
>>2576658
This shit right here is sublime
>>2568717
My favorite artist and art idol Vlad Tkach drew these amazing concept works for Metro Last Light.
>>2569188

nice nazi dubs btw
>>2569639
Astonishing work.

>>2577401

>>2577491
Your personal preference is someone copying nazi uniform but leaving out details?
>>2568717
Always been fascinated by this one
>>2572102
done seen it at the russkij museij. Amazing.
>>2576865
Afraid of water or something of the sorts I read
>>2572102
Wut. I've seen a better version of this piece. What up with that?
I like all of Renoir's paintings and people who say they hate Impressionism make me very upset.
That said, pic related is my favorite painting. I used to judge art on the basis of how well it communicated a message or emotion universally - would future generations still think this is powerful and evocative without knowing the context.
But knowing the context, I personally think this painting is very powerful and the imagery is very memorable.
War is less a romantic adventure and more a dark room filled with chaos and destruction where mothers weep over dead infants and soldiers are trampled underfoot by rampaging beasts.
>>2577748
That painting is autism, sorry friend
>>2577749
That's fine. Do a little research into the circumstances surrounding its creation and you might think differently. It's not a painting that exists for its own sake.
>>2577748
Surrealism 4 lyfe

>>2568717
really most of Millais' stuff. Big fan of van gogh as well. I'm not too big on classical and renaissance art, it's just not as intelligent to me. Well constructed, sure, but a Monet landscape has more interest than a Raphael vision
though I'm learning more about art history so I might change my mind
>>2577850

Emotions and situations have nothing to do with sacrificing skill.
>>2577850

>>2581270
Oh don't worry, that was a shitpost.
Also, do you suggest any manga? I'm a big action fan, not very receptive to SoL mangas, but I don't like big dumb fighters either. Stuff like TG, DRRR! or AoT are right up my alley.
>>2576834
funny that you mention nazi dubs because the artist,Arnold Böcklin, also did a painting hitler considered to be his favorite
>>2581286
Hoshi no Samidare is great even though the beggining is kinda slow.
Vinland Saga and Berserk are classics everyone should have read.
Getter Robo and Devilman also are p. cool not sure if it's your style but w/e
Also Dorohedoro is best manga ever.
This thread made my dick hurt.
>>2580587
I don't recognize the left and right actors. Beelzebub on the left?
Pure formality done right.
>>2581312
Cool, I'll check them out! Thanks!
>>2581312
>Also Dorohedoro is best manga ever.
Checks out, design is great.
It's nice to see the attempts at perspective done by the renaissance artists
>>2569557

>>2572109
Interesting collage work if nothing else.
This. Not in the least because despite the general theme it has almost no elements that are "magical" or "unrealistic" by themselves. Pretty much everything is conveyed view lighting alone.
>>2581286
>I don't like big dumb fighters
>TG, AoT, DRRR
>>2583534
Compared to Fist of the North Star, Naruto or One Piece, they're not.
>>2583539
To clarify, I meant that I liked action, but I enjoyed plot behind it. I can't watch something plotless, nor something actionless.
Things like Akira or Ghost in the Shell are prime examples of hitting the perfect balance.
>>2568717
The hands are so I can love you better.

At first my favorite was The Dream of the Fisherman's Wife. You know, the one where that bitch was getting her pussy licked by an octopus and another octopus is doing some shit with her mouth. Fucking classic. I did come across this other picture that I fucking adore and it is the one posted. I think it is called "Taira no Kiyomori in the Ghosty Garden" or something like that.
This one. I forget the title, but it was made by Camille Rose Garcia.
favorite portrait ever

wow! I didn't realize this painting was situated in a room, cool.
Gonna have to go with Blue Poles.

Skill can be found in minimalism, abstraction, symbolism, etc etc etc. Not defending what you're referring to necessarily, but wanted to put it out there.

>>2575664
don't worry your use of jargon and feeling of superiority is what counts as intelligence these days

>thinks terms like "overrendeing" are to do with "bare bones basic composition"
you're not good at context anon
>>2592098
maybe try not looking to impress with bullshit
>>2592104
Then why not explain why something is bullshit in the first place instead of just shitposting?
>>2592101
Composition is merely design, and decisions made with placement of subjects and their details are all part of the composition.
Not my all time favorite, but for some reason it's just so fucking cool
>>2572247
This terrifies me. Being helped to the chopping block. Jesus.

Sometimes feel Alma-Tadema's work is a little insipid but this is the only painting I can honestly say i looked at for over an hour the first time I saw it
>>2591421
I´m aware, but the problem rises when most people cover their own lack of skill saying it is minimalism, cubism and the others.
Picasso was talented in realism when he transitioned into his own technique.
>>2581508
I fail ya bro.It is a Ricardo Federici artwork for one of his graphic-novels:Saria.
>>2576764
>>2576681
The anon who actually drew merc_wip wasn't even in the argument. Some other guy just posted it when asked to post his work.
He had only posted it once one or two days before the argument and he had been drawing for 4,5 years before the picture was made
It took off because its basically a lot of tropes with some artists all condensed to one picture. The generic design, still lifelessness
and the "mercenary" while having decent rendering. All combined became the epitome of cliches. And thus it became a meme.
I probably shouldn't post my favorite piece of art from Okiyo, but here's one I'm fond of. I just live how the artist handles detail, anatomy, and form. The irony is that I don't do lewd or furry art(not that I judge others who do).
Can't say I have any one favorite, but I love anything from this guy.
>>2577748
>>2577751
So what if a painting doesn't exist for it's own sake? That doesn't make it any less shit. An autistic elephant baby might have drawn two strokes of green paint on a canvas, and when I hear the story I would say "aww that's cute and sweet" but how can I say that the painting itself is good or has any merit? The painting itself is SHIT and that's all that matters. If I posted pic related here that supposedly depict just as edgy shit like "it's a scene of modern life, where sisters and brothers know not each other and sons forget their fathers while mesmerized by the screen of white" would you think it's an amazing artwork? Admit it, you're fascinated by the story, not the art itself.
>>2603545
the story is part of the art dumbass
>>2576658
my grandmother has this hanging up in her house haha
>>2577748
Serious question: are you capable of thinking for yourself? Do you have your own opinions or do you get them all from art history textbooks?
