I would get a charcoal pencil since they're still pretty cheap but allow you a much wider range of values. You'll learn with a pencil, but you'll learn more with charcoal.

Fun fact - he, and many other renaissance artists, used a sanguine chalk for sketching, which is why most stuff you see from that era was done in reddish-brown lines. That's because it was good, plentiful and cheap at the time. Unfortunately, it was such a favorite that the earth's stock has been heavily depleted, and getting your hands on genuine sanguine nowadays (as opposed to colored chalk) is way more expensive than back then.

I have like 150-200 in lead holders and mechanical pencils and other traditional supplies, around 300 in trying different tablets and 200 in art programs and other digital things I've paid for and haven't pirated, 100 in physical books. Like 800 total building my PC which I thought would be my "workstation". This is all since I got my job in August of 14.

Before, I might have had my bamboo ctl-460, a shitty circa 2010 Core i3 Toshiba laptop, pirated Sai and like 2-3 mechinical pencils I had from when I was in school, and I drew so much more back then (2011-2013)

Feels really disgusting typing all that out.

Not him, but have you listened to some of his lectures? It has nothing to do with his skill as an artist, the dude is just seriously fucking uncomfortable and wastes a lot of time making his class "engaging" (god above knows how you can enjoy it).
