FAQ:
Something's broken, what do I do?

>The site is currently in the alpha phase of development and is being built around us as we compete so sometimes things go wrong. If you ever need any help send me a tweet @LavaFlake or shoot me an email [email protected].

What do we draw?

>Whatever you want. At this point there's no required topic so draw your heart out. Make sure you submit at least a half hour of work or you may get a low effort warning.

What's a low effort warning?

>The goal is to get people to draw every day by turning it into a competition. The low effort warning system is to prevent people from posting last minute, quick sketches when they're feeling lazy. If you receive a warning and it happens again within a month you'll be eliminated.

>This rule has been the cause of a lot of concern amongst newer artists so let me reiterate: this system is to police low effort content and has nothing to do with the quality of the work. New artists are more than welcome.

What happens if I'm eliminated?

>A new Last Artist Standing challenge starts every week. If you get eliminated then get it together and rejoin next week.

How can there be a new Last Artist Standing challenge every week?

>This is a way to let new artists join in and to allow re-entry for the eliminated. Every week a new challenge is started. If you joined on week 1 and make it to week 2 then your daily submission counts for both the first and second Last Artist Standing. If you get eliminated then you're eliminated from both challenges and you'll be able to rejoin next week.

Will I have an advantage if I join later in the week?

>The winner of a Last Artist Standing will be the artist with the longest streak. If you join on day 1 and last until day 85 then you'll have a streak of 85. If there's only one person left in the challenge when you're eliminated but they joined on Day 7 then they'll need to continue on for another week. If they're eliminated before then, you win.

Lava: nice thumbs but the layout seems a bit too dull, the spacing is all the same and you have too many portrait size panels. I suggest using MangaStudio/ClipStudio for making layouts, it makes panelling 100 times easier

aimai: nice work as usual, although in your last comic is there were some pages that were a bit unclear in which direction/which panel I was supposed to look next. but overall I like the vibe you got going here. looking forward to reading the next chapter

lonku: how many pages are you doing? don't tire yourself out too much, the sketch on comic rough 2 looks neat, but try to avoid square speech bubbles and use a tail as this was my main gripe with your last comic

RyderJax: try to focus more on the composition and layout when doing thumbs. I recommend Gnomon (Syd Mead) 1 Thumbnail Sketching and Line Drawing avi

I was told to keep it simple for my first attempt so I went the watchmen route. I limited myself to what can fit on a 3x3 grid. When I started the challenge I was reading Sandman and wanted to do interesting layouts but I was warned against it. I'll work my way up I guess.

Oh and I don't have clip studio so I'm stuck with Photoshop for now. It's not too bad with the cube layout thanks to stroke for the panel borders and guides make it easy to chop them up however I want. I'll stick with the current panel layout for the rest of this story then try something new

Use the side of your lead as well as its tip to shade, same as you would do with a everyday pencil, use cross scratching as a method to create detail and texture rated than render shadows (you can do as you please once you master the tool though).

Also, unless you are working in a rated large canvas you shouldn't expose your lead this much, it's a bit overkill for what you are doing, and It will totally mess with your ability to control your mechanical pencil.

Hey man, some of your lines are actually pretty promising but most are an eye sore.

I know this is a thing that comes with practice but if you're more conscious of it you might be able to do better lines more often.

Line exercises aren't the devil, they do help as a good warm up. And don't be afraid to turn your paper if it helps you get a better, more confident line.

Get some tasty drinks (coffee) and snacks to support you in the process and draw something from your comfort zone, studies or fanart. Or simply start scribbling and drawing geometric forms and then try to develop characters/environments from them.

What helps you do other stuff when you're feeling down? It's different for different people.

For me, I like doing something I wouldn't usually do, like trying a roll thread or a drawfag thread on another board, drawing a fanart of something I'm not a fan of, or copying a picture by an artist whose style is completely different than mine. These kind of things put no pressure on me, and sometimes I even feel like I'm actively wasting my time because I should be drawing something else, which is a bonus when I'm sad and in a mood for self-sabotage. Except it's not really a waste of time. Usually I feel like drawing more when I'm done, and even if I don't, I still managed to doodle for at least an hour or two.

Get ctrl+paint basic photoshop rendering tutorial (to learn some fundamental techniques) and any random gumroad tutorials that look nice to you (to look at workflows of different artists) (anthony jones and zedig have some pretty straightforward, easy to understand vids, from what I remember). Do some photo studies and copies of artwork that you like.

You will need some light and color info too, for which I recommend scott robertson's how to render matte surfaces and jermey vickery's practical light and color.

(All of this assuming you're a beginner.)
