Why don't you just give it up /ic/
>>
it's all i have

if i gave it up now i'd have nothing
>>
Ever since I could remember I wanted to be an artist. I let depression cripple me to a halt for too long. No turning back now
>>
>>2518494
is there a sauce for that?
>>
>>2518494
because we would end up like you.
>>
>>2518494
>Why don't you just give it up /ic/
Because I have to pay rent
>>
>>2518494
>that hand
>that everything
If that is autobiographical, nigga should've spent more time in classes.
>>
>>2518496
>it's all i have
>if i gave it up now i'd have nothing
Pretty much this
>>
I know this is a novel concept to some people, but you can be an artist and not be a pathetic failure.
Like... just give it a shot.
>>
>>2518797
People do give it a shot. And the statistics show most end up failures. 90% of art school graduates do not end up with a career in art, and are instead left with debt and a useless degree. I imagine the statistics look even worse for people who try to self teach.
>>
>>2518807
The people who self teach has the advantage of avoiding the crippling debt and useless degree.
>>
>>2518807
art school =/= art class =/= art

Also
>being american
>>
>>2518812
But they have the disadvantage of not having courses and assignments that teach and force a level of productivity. Most self teaching people have terrible discipline. They also have the disadvantage of not having access to facilities, life drawing, feedback on work, and other students and teachers who can motivate or be useful connections in the future.
>>
>>2518494
Never gonna give art up
>>
>>2518817
How to go to an art school and not be retarded at the same time:

1. take a fundamentals course for like 200 bucks
2. get scholarship
2a. Repeat step 1 if necessary

This is not rocket science.

Watts said he needed 15 years of gitting gut after his main job and when wife/children /life were distracting him.

I have time. I don't mind being good at 45.
>>
>>2518828
So you're 30?

Also I doubt Jeff said that. He was already trained by his dad from a young age and by his late teens/early 20's was working professionally.
>>
>>2518828
He just said that to make sure you don't git gud before he's dead and you can't steal his money.
>>
>>2518494
I'll be a useless failure with or without art.

At least art gives some kind of light at the end of its tunnel.
>>
Drawing has been my dream before I even realized it, and I let depression keep me from seeing that. I have to make up for lost time.
I have to get better, I have to learn more
>>
>>2518494
Guys where the fuck is this from?? Is this an edit?
Whats funny about this thread is that if this book is legit than the ending is going to be the artist becoming an artist and proving that guy wrong, obviously.

Nah I don't think it's an edit. Iirc it's from some manga from this woman that decided to do an autobiographical inspired comic on her experience in art school and her strict mentor. Can't recall the name of it though.
>>
>>2518879
I read that comic and I don't think I remember that part. Her dad wasn't that mean, I don't think. Its called KakuKaku Shikajika
>>
>>2518881
Oh okay, I never actually read it, I've just seen pieces of it posted now and then. Maybe it isn't actually from it then.
>>
>>2518838

I'm nearly 27, I give myself 3 years more.

>doubt Jeff said that

He said this in his video
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KX0MrnzBJ8M

and also that he wasn't really interested in art until injury prevented him from going sports. But yeah, he had a father that was a painter.

> by his late teens/early 20's was working professionally

He went to California Art Institute in Calabasas and became illustrator for movie industry, but it was all after he enrolled and was taught there. He wasn't that young before he became professional.

>>2518839

That's true. He often...well, one has to be quite aware of what he says and why he says what he does, it's good to be critical in regards to him.
>>
>>2518897
>and also that he wasn't really interested in art
I don't buy that for a second. I've seen the work he did when he was around 20 and it was quite advanced. Maybe he didn't intend to do it as a career initially, but he was already more skilled than anyone on /ic/ by his late teens.
>>
>>2518895
It's not from it for sure. The art style is different.
Also the one in op looks like some western comic, might be wrong on this one though

because its all I have
>>
>wasting time with drawing -> becoming a screwup who can't get things right

What a dumb premise. At least he has some discipline that the guy is trying to destroy.
>>
>>2518494
>>2518517

Pretty much this. Art is paying my rent, so if I give up, I have to go back home.
>>
>>2518494
I'm good at nothing else but playing video games and drawing. I don't even like playing video games. Though that could change with Overwatch
>>
>>2518494
frankly, I thought about giving up before. But all the positive comments on i/c have kept me on track.

Thank you guys.

I love you too! <3
>>
>>2518955
Second that.
>>
>>2518995

Same thing I've thought about it before as well. Honestly I keep going because I don't really like much else. For me even playing video games and watching tv gets boring after a while art has so much to it its hard to really be bored with it, there is always something to do and improve at.

I wouldn't suggest doing it as a career unless you can't imagine doing anything else for a living. I don't think you need to feel amazing just doing it but you should have a intense desire to improve and show what you can do.
>>
>>2518494
That comic panel looks cringy.

Maybe learn to vent your anger in some other way than passive aggressive shitposts on 4chan

>haha look how annoying i am isnt it funny guys
>haha nothing will ever be funnier than contrarianism
>im being a faggot and no one can stop me

Theres something to put in your trip you useless shit.
>>
>>2518995

>I only draw because I'm bitter about people shitting on me for being an egotistical attention-whoring cunt
>>
>>2519318
im not angry
>>2519339
wait, so im actually talented and people are just shitting on me for being an egotistical attention-whoring cunt?

Fuck ya!
>>
>>2519378

Are you so delusional that you think talent is a requirement for people to shit on you for being an egotistical attention whoring cunt?

No, the only requirement for being an egotistical attention whoring cunt is beingan egotistical attention whoring cunt. You being a hack just makes it more cringeworthy.
>>
>>2518955
>>2518517
What do you guys do that you can pay rent from art?

I just started taking on comissions this year and theres no way id be able to afford rent from that alone, but that is my goal.
>>
>>2518817
All of those things are merely tools to becoming better.

If you lack discipline, you're shit out of luck, college or not.
>>
>>2519863
>If you lack discipline, you're shit out of luck, college or not.

Agreed but I think you'll get to a professional level faster going through college than through doing it part time at home.

Unless your rents just let you go full neet and don't care letting you practice 12 hours a day, for most people though they'd need to have at least apart time job to practice on their own.
>>
>>2518494
Because I used to be a DJ. I thought playing other people's music was an actual talent. Then I realized I was just a human ipod and I had a breakdown and feel into a deep depression. Now I draw and I go to school and life is good.
>>
I am thinking about it. I decided that I want to learn to draw well in 2014,( but I even had some attempts earlier.)
But in 2014 I swore that I will prove to a certain someone, that I'm not worthless, by producing quality work.
I have a bunch of scenes, drawings, paintings, charachters stuck in my head that I want to put on paper, but when it comes to actually draw them..
There comes a mix of not having the skills to do so, but more importantly, this really crippling feeling of anxiety that I HAVE to do a great job. I can no longer enjoy the process, and lately I've been thinking that maybe because I've been doing it for the wrong reason.. and because of that I feel empty and shallow, and cant figure out, whether I truly want to learn it (it's just that it's hard to do without proper instruction) or I should just give up completely. But I would have nothing If I gave up. It really is all I have, no matter how bad I am at it.
>>
What bothers me is that nowadays I draw because I want to get something out of it. Not so much for the fun of it.. I'm stuck real bad.
>>
>>2519721
I would imagine that they either got gud or draw a lot of furry porn.
>>
>>2520992
>>2521003
advice?
>>
>>2521528
draw subjects and scenes that are fun for you and also target the areas you want to improve.
>>
>>2519381
im a hack? Sorry but I got this good thanks to hard work. You wouldn't accusing of being a hacker if you tried harder.

Might I remind you of the art 'schools' that your cited data was likely pulled from?

>The students dont want to learn they want to dress themselves as works of art
From that one infographic.

Its definitely tough when you weigh too heavily the opinions and the boogeymen and the stigma and the "holy shit what am i doing with my life i am so pathetic" bimonthly crisises. But really, you can make it. With honest effort, and just ducking under the smog of stigma by submerging yourself in love and/or fascination of the "craft." At that point, you just keep moving forward.
>>
>>2518828
From around the age of six, I had the habit of sketching from life. I became an artist, and from fifty on began producing works that won some reputation, but nothing I did before the age of seventy was worthy of attention. At seventy-three, I began to grasp the structures of birds and beasts, insects and fish, and of the way plants grow. If I go on trying, I will surely understand them still better by the time I am eighty-six, so that by ninety I will have penetrated to their essential nature. At one hundred, I may well have a positively divine understanding of them, while at one hundred and thirty, forty, or more I will have reached the stage where every dot and every stroke I paint will be alive. May Heaven, that grants long life, give me the chance to prove that this is no lie.
