I wanna make a web comic (kind of to act as a resume for an internship junior year)over the summer but I am no architect, I have been copying so environment/setting stuff trying to replicate if, am I going about this the right way?

You talking about backgrounds? Learn how to paint landscapes. If you need help with references, try examining the work of famous artists. I personally like Edward Hopper.
