>want to improve my rendering of lighting in paintings

Share with me anons, what bits of science have you learnt just from your artistic pursuits?
>>
>want to get a bit into world-building for my own art and concepts
> end up learning how plants and insects have evolved and developed and how nature creates the most efficient designs

I have the exact opposite experience. I'm an engineering student so when we were learning optics all I could think was, "Wow, this makes rendering make so much more sense"
>>
>>2502473

There's nothing wrong with that if you want to become a scientific illustrator or something of the like.

If you want to world-build, learn some of the basics of writing, read Tolkien.
>>
>>2502470
well its really taught me about anatomy
>>
>>2502470
Reading up on Rayleigh Scattering and actually understanding what happens with light that travels through air will really help with understanding how objects change in appearance with atmospheric perspective. For example, a white object very far away will get warmer rather than cooler (opposite of what most people are taught).

>>2502487
oh that's interesting, didn't know about that (far off white objects appearing warmer). It's almost counter-intuitive - I've always assumed it all became desaturated and light-blueish. I have to check that out.
>>
>>2502470
learned a lot about biological engineering, leverage, etc. through anatomy studies.
>>
>>2502499
Yeah it's a subtle effect, but they definitely get warmer. It's most apparent when you have a partially cloudy sky, the clouds near the horizon (therefore very far away) take on a slightly orange colour. Basically all the blue light gets bounced away by the time it reached your eyes. Same reason sunlight is red at sunset.
>>
>>2502470
Learned how stuff works (the ear, the digestive track, fat distribution). Also geology. I used to like copying the scientific illustrations from my textbooks and color them.
I was always very proud how my notebooks were always very pleasing to look at with illustrations and neat hand writing
>>
>>2502484
Yeah, I do the writing thing from time to time. I want my art to go hand in hand with my written stories one day
>>
>>2502505
Not that anon bit that's still interesting to know, defo will help me in the future. Also, I heard nowadays this effect is multiplied by the air pollution that wasn't there a few centuries ago. Any info on that?
>>
>>2502774
Smog probably plays into it yeah. I remember visiting LA and being shocked at how strong the atmospheric perspective was. I always thought the artists from around there exaggerated it for artistic reasons, but it really look different than where I come from. Though maybe that's because of moisture from the sea, and not pollution? In any case, in extreme smog scenarios like China and stuff you can see it in photos.
>>
>>2502774
>>2502780
Also forgot to mention, I heard once that in Australia it looks different too. Apparently oils from eucalyptus trees gets into the air and tinges the atmosphere to be more blue-grey than other regions. Not sure how true that is, but it's neat if real.

Ah neat, thanks a lot anon. I'm a cloudfag and this satisfies my needs.

I am absolutely obsessed with game tech. I just can't get enough of new engines, tech demos, and new rendering technology.

When doom 3 came out it completely changed the way I approached lighting in my paintings. I look at cast shadows as if they were stencil shaders and details like they were normalmaps. I don't know why but that sort of technical problem solving easily translate to art for me. it was almost as if overnight I got incredibly better at rendering values and lighting because of that game.

The new BFG version actually makes the game look worse for some reason. Like, they removed a lot of the real time lighting.

Oh wow thanks, that's a fairly comprehensive site on colour

>>2502784
Actually, you might be onto something, when I visited the National Gallery of Victoria, I noticed that a lot of the early colonial European artists (who migrated) couldn't quite capture the atmosphere of the Australian bushland - colours seemed unrealistically saturated and almost yellowish. The artists who grew up in Aus (and therefore more exposed to the atmosphere) did a much better job.

I wanted to draw soldiers and military shit.
I now know how most guns work, primarily through reading firearm literature and watching forgottenweapons videos on youtube.
Not really scientific though, its more mechanics.

I've learned a lot about how water works visually, but nothing really beats "draw what you see".

I post art here sometimes just not a lot and most of it doesn't really show lighting. If I can find some of my older pictures before and after doom 3 I will.

I THINK this is how you're suppose to do lighting in perspective but I don't really know. I just sorta slammed together my own little process to do it based just on how lighting works in that game. This is super rough 10 minute deally but shows the process.
>>
>>2504708
Cool man. Biggest problem I see is you are treating the light source as though it is an infinitely tiny point source. In reality the lamp has a shade over it which diffuses the light a ton (think of how clouds in front of the sun diffuse things on an overcast day). So all your shadows would be much softer and have a large penumbra. There would also be a brighter bit of more direct light coming out both the top and bottom of the shade.
>>
>>2504714
Stencil shaders work by using a single point, which is the thing I'm showin here.

anddd, well, yeah. Making difused light is the same process but it just takes 4 times as long since you have to draw lines from the top, bottom and both sides as well as the center. Which I'm totally not going to do for just one little post.
>>
>>2504721
Alright, gotcha. I just wanted to make sure you were aware that you would need to treat it differently if you were going for how the light would actually appear in the scene.
