>start to take art seriously
>have done nothing but reference my entire life
>anytime imaginative drawing was attempted I lost confidence
>tfw I feel like I've been lying to myself about being able to draw

Pls help, guys. I know this is a plebian post but I just don't know what to do. I see people talk about how amazing it is to let their mind bleed through their pen n' shit and I just want that so bad.
>>
>>2494329
same here drawing some shit several day year, but still can't draw any thing without references but even worse thing is i can only do a study
>>
If you don't have a solid visual library, drawing without a reference is really hard.
>>
how do I avoid becoming like OP? I'm still learning from references but i'm not where I want to be yet

Sorry about the potato camera

And this is my absolute best from imagination from like two months ago. My favorite part is a reference--i.e. the steam
>>
>>2494336
50 % references 50% imagination
>>
>>2494348
Yes that's the only way I can cope with being a photo addict. I just add a little style and feel okay.

I googled and found a cringefest, thanks

>>
>>2494347
I think you should keep drawing from imagination, just doodle away, don't bother with finished works. you're bound to "get it" after a while, and then that visual library comes in handy.
>>
Just pull up refs as needed - and most importantly, when needed. Wait until you're stumped, don't collect a dozen refs before you even start your drawing.
>>
>>2494346
well its not like your referencing skills are that good either.

but on point, rather than just copying from reference, copy the pose but don't actually copy the image. ie construct the pose yourself, don't just mindlessly copy it.
>>
>>2494412
agreeing with this anon OP, you've been learning how to copy and not really how to constructively draw. That's probably the big component that's stumping you from drawing from imagination. There's a lot that needs to be learned.
>>
>>2494404
This This This. People don't know this yet?
>>
>>2494412
Honestly, I have no idea what to consider good at this point. I don't even know what to aspire for. Everything I consider(ed) good, everyone here goes, "nope" (and I mean other artists).

What would you consider, "good"?
>>
>>2494346
You're allowed to use refs when drawing from imagination. Just use multiple and make a composite, while adding your own flair
>>
>>2494422
Good just means better than the average artist. But you shouldn't strive to be "good" you just strive to be better and eventually you get passed being just good.

You never reach the skill level you're aiming for, if you aim for good you'll always be subpar, if you aim for great, you'll always be just good.

Aim as high as you can possibly think of.

Another reference

BTW I'm not just seeking approval, I want to know what people like and to see through their eyes.
>>
>>2494329

I can't answer that question without asking a couple of my own.

Do you have any stories you want to tell?

Do you have any images in your mind that you want to exist in the real world?

I fucking love giants, bruh

>>2494467

Draw giants till you're sick of them.
>>
>>2494339
Practice and persist instead of getting frustrated and giving up after like one attempt. If you try to do something that's unfamiliar to you, of course it's going to be rocky at first, what do you expect? After you study something from reference, like the muscles of the arm, put it away and try to duplicate it from memory.
>>
I have the opposite problem. Can't fucking draw from reference. Looks like shit.
>>
>>2494361
I think I just found my new ringtone.
>>
>>2494346
I wish your construction was as good as mine and my shading as good as yours
>>
>>2494421
I didn't know until just now. I have a folder of hundreds of potential refs that I've never used...
>>
why do you people think using reference is a bad thing?
>>
>>2495476
I'm studying construction now, but I keep getting distracted by books.
>>2495486
It's not "bad", it's just that reference art isn't really creation. Reference is just practice.

You're completely missing the point of reference. You're confusing a "study" with "using reference". Reference isn't copying a pose 1:1-- you dissect reference analytically and apply it in the context of your work. That's why it's not useful to hunt for reference before you've even started drawing. You don't even have a context with which to fit the reference in.

Pic is of Krenz using reference.
>>
>>2495656
is he just using reference for the perspective?
>>
>>2495656
What was the point of that reference?
He literally applied none of it.

Is this the right thread for illustration/ tattoo art?

Could use some critiques, I'm an apprentice currently. These are mainly sketchy practice work.
>>
>>2495662
Yes, he's using the picture as reference to find the right perspective and how to place people in that space. There are many ways to use reference, this being just one of them. When you analyze some aspect of an image and apply it to new contexts then you're using it as reference-- whether that be consideration of perspective/anatomy/pose/color palette/composition or literally whatever you can think of. For example, looking at someone else's art and reducing it to large abstract shapes just to figure out how they fill the space on the canvas is also using reference.

It ceases to be reference when your goal isn't to create something new but to copy some aspect 1:1-- that is, doing a color study, anatomy study, compositional study, etc.

>>2495673
I'm not even sure what to say to this.

I know the faces are somewhat wrong, but I'm not used to breaking up the image into symbols and gradients for tattoos yet. It's like learning to draw again
>>
>>2494353
That's the way everybody does it, are you fucking kidding me?

You're either drawing from life to study or using references for creative shit.

I had no idea, thanks.
>>
>>2495679

I'll say something to this.
>>2495673
Since something should be said and you didn't.

The point of this piece was to illustrate using ref without copying it 1:1 (as >>2495679 put it.)

It is, however, not the norm, nor what you should aspire to do with ref.

It is a piece specifically made to dissuade people from doing 1:1 refs. It is a loose, non-academic use of ref, for fun.

>I used this reference
>With it, I made this! Haha!

It's more akin to an exquisite corpse than it is anything else.
>>
who drew op comic? i like it
>>

>>
>>2495679
you dont need that entire process when you can drop simple perspective in
>>
>>2496121
>>2496177

It's not really him using reference with the purpose of doing one particular piece, but rather a study and creative exercise in one.
>>
>>2496121
I can understand it from a "look what you CAN do" point, but posting it as an example of what a ref would be is just completely wrong.
Nobody uses refs like that when actually drawing. It'd be like posting spongebob when someone needs help drawing a circle.

I don't usually use references and never had anyone rate my doodles, what do you guys think of this? Sorry about the shitty quality, I took the picture with my phone and the original got destroyed in a house fire.
