Feel free to post your original works as well if you're trash.
TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.
Old thread: >>2488700
Dumping these feature tuts.
Remember to focus on construction more than features, though.
Hey, I'm trash.
Posted in another thread but this seems more suitable.
First attempt at wet on wet, don't think I got enough liquid white on there prior to starting.
Or are landscapes just considered shit teir here?
I've noticed that the fastest way to learn for me is through watching someone else perform the task before trying it myself. I think it applies to art as well.
I wish more artists would upload or stream their workflow though I certainly understand why someone would think that a bother.

>look how good my first attempt is
>I'm gonna post this over and over instead of doing more paintings
I'm going to buy all the books listed in the sticky, but where do I go from there? What am I supposed to do after I study all those books?
>>2492298
You'll know after reading those books. Reading and understanding those books could keep you busy for at least half to a whole decade.
>>2492303
there are still other things I should learn along the way though. Like anatomy. Am I supposed to just read standard biology class books or what?
>>2492304
There are books for that too, like Sarah Simblet's anatomy for the artist
observation is first
drawing with reference is second
drawing with imagination is last...
>>2492304
books are fine for anatomy but you really should be sitting in on dissections at your local med school
>>2492191
I think it's pretty clear, which is good, but I recommend including more atmosphere. Basically, create depth through adding the colors of the sky to distant objects.

After seeing it so many times I grew to love this piece.
>>2492366
>confident expression
>intimidating pose with finger slightly over trigger as a sign of readiness
>other hand gripping knife covered in blood to imply action
What's there not to love about this piece?
I've been drawing for about a month now and I just find it insanely boring to draw with pencil and paper. I doodled a bit with photoshop and tried to draw with my mouse and ended up getting a better eye than what I could do on paper. Granted I undid a lot of mistakes I still enjoyed it more doing it on the PC over paper. I used to do a lot of graphic design stuff back in the day for fun so I guess that is probably why I prefer digital. However I don't have enough money to invest in a tablet with a screen right now and I can't stand drawing with pencils but I want to practice.
>>2493057
>I don't have enough money to invest in a tablet with a screen
Buy one without a screen? Whatever the new wacom equivalent to the old bamboo is.
>>2492154
can't seem to get the likeness :/, does that come with rendering usually? what sticks out the most?
>>2493101
is this from life? you can't get likenesses from imagination because there's nobody for it to look like, and the way to get the most extreme likeness in life drawing is to draw without construction.
how did I do?
I kinda lost interest after I realized I needed more practice varying line weight. But I'd still appreciate critique or suggestions for what to practice.
>>2493108
You're better than me at rendering so I can't help much, but I think the edges on the cylinder look a little off. The cube looks great, especially the cast shadow and the planes facing the viewer. However, the bottom edges look slightly odd. I don't have the ref so I don't know if it's actually wrong.
>>2493106

>>2493128

>>2493057
The biggest part is loving the process of drawing. Traditional has a lot of upsides when compared to digital, but if you can't enjoy it, there's little use.

>>2493130
The lines are scratchy, elements of plane are bit messy and perspective of upper wing is broken.
Can someone more knowledgeable in perspective explain why vanishing points can be in places OTHER than the absolute edges of the horizon line? How is it possible for two VP's to be in positions like pic related?
>>2493157
I have no idea what that picture is supposed to illustrate.
A vanishing point is always located on a horizon line, but you can (need) to have multiple horizon lines depending on your scene.
>>2493157

Exactly my thoughts. I find it a great way to transition/warmup from doing whatever I was doing into study mode.
>>2493443
sorry didn't realize it'd come out that large, i just took a shitty picture from my phone and didn't check
yeah i gotta work on values (and construction too), thanks anon! will probably start with value shading charts cause my pencil control is shit
>>2493057
I'm in a similar boat, anon. I've always wanted to learn to draw and would, every six months or so, decide to start, buy some pencils, steal some paper from the printer and then attempt to draw for a couple of hours before giving up in frustration and boredom. Something about sharpening pencils and ruining paper with erasers just irritates me.
Until about three weeks ago, when I used some online store credit to get an entry-level Wacom Intuos tablet (equivalent of US$125 in my currency). It was a bit weird for the first hour or so, but I'm basically used to using it now. And I've been drawing every day (up to perspective chapter in the Edwards book) and actually enjoying it way more than I did on paper.
I'm just kinda worried that I'm ruining my chance of ever getting good by starting with digital when everyone says to start analogue.
>>2493555
No rules, only tools anon. Digital is as solid a medium as pen and paper, just try and avoid certain digital shortcuts so you're not replacing fundamental skill with the computer.

Would drawing from a reference sheet like this be a good way to learn?
Im currently drawing it but at a larger size to try

Perspective is honestly the easiest part of drawing. You just need to find a few good examples to learn. I would post the Loomis page if I had it. You can do it.
>>2493645
No , i don't think it's a good idea since those bodies have some exaggerations. I recommand studying the body after photos of people , then after you manage to get a grip of the anatomy and be able to draw without reference a proportional and acceptable human body, you can start with drawing after the pic you posted

thank you. the idea was that it was some crustacean monster awaken from a damp crevace. so vrey limited lighting. That being said, compression lowered the contrast of everything in the picture, so it looks darker than it should
>>2494204
Push the values on the left claw, especially where it's blending into the leg. Try to push contrast throughout the picture.
Paint it's bottom. It wouldn't be completely dark, there would be some reflected light
Try to think about using value to show the change in distance from the front to the back of the scene
You can find a lot of great advice for these kind of pictures here

guys how do i water
/ic/ ive been at this for almost two years and made lot of progress but i still cant do lines for anything. am i retarded or something. ive been doing peter hans warm ups everyday for the past few weeks but i just cant seem to have it translate into being useful in practice. do i just accept my fate that ill never be able to draw efficiently. am i fixable?
>>2495043
>do I just accept
No you dingus. You won't improve your lines unless you specifically practice them. Post what you've been doing.
>>2495013
Having fun drawing is going to help you retain your interest but it's probably not going to help your ability to draw in the long run.
Loomis is boring but keep at it. Retaining the information in those books will carry you far.
When drawing from the shoulder, using tripod grip, is the hand supposed to contact the paper? It feels more stable if it does, but the friction is uneven as the hand slightly catches the paper or not, and that harms the lines. Also the friction completely changes at the edge of the paper. Am I supposed to support the hand in free air? Or use a slippery glove?
>>2495046
i did this

At your level there is absolutely nothing wrong with using a ruler to help with straight lines, especially in a piece like that where perspective is important.
If it's really bothering you, block out some time and just draw lines every day. Line confidence and stability are things you can grind out with some patience.

proport guy, any word?
>>2495770
I've always felt like gestures are actually a pretty terrible beginner exercise.
Better you get the hang of forms and proportions first. Yes, they'll be stiff, but I think you'll learn more from doing some stiff figure drawings and constructions than you will from dozens of 30 second gestures at the start. A good gesture is basically depending on letting your muscle memory and intuition take the reins, and if you don't have muscle memory or intuition it's not going to do you much good.
>>2495867
The problem is that pretty much everything is wrong. Your proportions are completely off, it looks flat, your line control is bad, etc.
What have you been working on? Have you read any books yet?
>>2495874
I've been trying to copy human figurines and measure the body parts. It's not as simple as it seems. It's really confusing to measure as well.

it would do you well to go through keys to drawing again(assuming you have, it's a must for any beginner.), also head construction and building with forms so you can feel the shape, since this looks very 2d.
>>2495951
Thanks, yeah i have not fully gone through it I'll focus on reading/doing it all. I'm just trying to not overwhelm myself with too much information. I just wanna focus on basics right now and learn to draw what I see properly.
So I just got finished with chapter 2 of Keys to Drawing, Do I have to repeat the projects if they look like shit? Or do I just need to get through the book first? I get the lessons and I do my best to follow the instructions but every project is different so I feel like I'm not getting enough practice with any particular one of the lessons.
I was about to complain that I draw everything out of proportion and then I noticed chapter 3 covers all that.
I have like 50 sheets of gray construction paper, so I decided to draw something on it. Some of the colors are transparent, so I think I'll just stick with working in monochrome on it, or change mediums.
>>2496059
Also didn't realize the file was so big. Sorry.
>>2496043
pls help
>>2496082
Alright, thanks. Also should I keep drawing from real life after I'm done? I kinda want to draw animated (western) stuff more than anything. How do I begin to go down that road? It's not as complex as real life.
>>2496089
no matter what style you're going for, drawing from life lets you have a solid grasp on how to stylize things when you do draw them
>>2496094
I see, thanks. But how will I turn that into toons? Should I try to draw the characters from my mind or do I trace them as I see them? When can I start to make them pose how I want them to?
I know I'm getting ahead of myself but it helps if I see the path forward.
>>2496059
>50 sheets of gray construction paper,
lel gj
>>2496098
It was for my basic design I class. Literally only used 4 sheets, and 50 pack was the smallest amount. So, I'm trying to use them up.
>>2494729
>end of part 1
check your retinas
>>2496096
>how will I turn that into toons?
That comes along the way the same way "style" does because if you think about it, they're not very different. Focus on your fundamentals for now and your toons will emerge from the way you draw certain things.
You're going to be discouraged when you draw from imagination because it's a fairly difficult task to do, even for people a little above beginner level. But the important thing is to keep grinding.
>>2496128
And how does that grind look like exactly? focus on a small aspect you suck and keep trying till it gets better?
>>2496150
What do you think it means?
>>2496152
I dunno, I suppose it means to keep trying to get to where you mean to go?
Now I'm not in a rush to buy a tablet although I could easily afford the cheaper versions. When should I start thinking about buying one? I'm telling myself to at least stick with this shit for a few months before I go and spend money.
>my stuff is looking the same 8 days later
So much for thinking that I am improving. In terms of drawing the body, is it efficient to start with faces first or the whole body without details then work on the individual details?
>>2496157
It's definitely a good idea to push for improvement every day but you gotta give yourself some leniency. Especially if you're already past your noob gains stage.
It doesn't matter what you start on, but whatever you do you need to grind construction before working on features. Bad construction = bad details = shit art.
>>2496158
I guess that I will practice more proko heads then. Maybe go through keys again.
Who would yoy recommend for whole body construction?
>>2492155
What I just needed. I was having problems converting facial features to lines.
>>2496160
I think Vilppu for gesture because he explains it the best (but always take a peek into others), but before that the general consensus in the beg threads is to understand anatomy before diving into gesture (some anons were talking about it up above).
>>2495889
So at your current stage, you should honestly just draw whatever the fuck you want. Keep pushing until you obtain solid muscle control and organic lines. Proportions can come with time, you're a little ahead of yourself right now.
It would be safer for you to find something else to draw instead of doing gestures and anatomy right off the bat. I started with forming skulls and faces out of basic shapes, but do what works for you.
>>2494527
>mfw you need this: https://archive.org/stream/pdfy-72f-FzW7wYN_r0ny/Bridgman%20-%20Complete%20Guide%20to%20Drawing%20from%20Life#page/n0/mode/2up
Also, don't draw outlines, draw like a painter. Think about shapes and shading. Read/re-read the sticky as well.
>>2496157
YOU ARE ALWAYS IMPROVING. Never once think to yourself that you aren't, because you'll only not improve if you convince yourself that. Stay confident, keep drawing. Start with whatever you want if you're only a week in. I began with skulls and faces for 2months/6-7hours a day, because it was fun for me. You can start thinking about everything after you start to "get" construction. If you feel frustrated, just clear your head and do what's fun. You'll see the fruits of your labor if you use your head and keep up your hard work.
>>2494490
Look at the top of both cylinders.
I also highly suggest using your drawing tool to get the angles of objects, even possibly using the tool along with your thumb to try to measure objects.
Redraw it, you don't have to shade it, but redraw the image, I am sure you can see some of the faults of how much you see certain shapes to how high others come in relation to one another.
>>2493108
Good, but none of the objects are pure white in the reference so you need to go to the lighter areas with a light gray rather than straight white.
>>2494034
ditch the vine charcoal and use a charcoal pencil
>>2495862
I agree. when i first started gestures they didn`t look anything like gesture drawings, they looked like a preschooler tried to draw a human body.
Once i build a lot of bodys out of individual shapes, and i got a grasp of how the body is build, my gesture drawings got a LOT better automatically. Improving my linework with
>>2495388

I have a particularly unsteady hand and although I've drawn casually my entire life lines I draw are still noticeably shaky. Which medium would be best to practice and develop for someone in my situation?
>>2496355

messily sketching without any thought isnt going to help. the front of the pyramid is all kinds of wrond, the angle is way higher on your drawing as if your looking down on the scene so the cubes and plane are strange, yet you straight up copied the cylinder without changing the perspective to fit your drawing.
construction isnt something you can rush, if you get it wrong your picture will look off.
dont copy the reference, work out the lines and how they work in a 3d environment so that you understand it, thats what construction is for.

replied to the wrong dude, but you get what I mean

oh. I thought it was a pun.

Someone's been watching sycra
i had drawing experience pencil drawing photo bashing whatever shit like that
but i'm still new at figure drawing
yeah that point is absolutely crap for me
is this book is good for me? i'm gonna study it when i has neet time
>>2496502
forgot the pic
>>2496440
Newbie here as well.
He drew 3D objects in space, isn`t that the exact opposite of symbol drawing?
>>2492154
I've never understood this
>sticky says watch essential videos about shading, 3d structure, gesture lines circles
>keys to drawing teaches you to draw what you see
which one should I go for first. Does it matter? I don't wanna overwhelm myself again to the point I just give up.
>>2496602
Why not both
>>2496602
Literally everything you see is reflected light on 3d structures.
A first good step imo is to learn how to draw the 5 basic shapes in perspective.
Elipses, Boxes, Cones Pyramids and Tubes. Everything consits of these shapes, or a combination of them. Once you can draw them, and get some sense for perspective, you can basically draw anything.
I'm still not too familiar with the types of art and what art falls into which category, take this painting for example, would it be considered contemporary art because an artist in the 21st century made it? or would it fall into some other category because I can't find how it relates to modern day life?
Just started painting digitally. This looks better on my tablet, but on my main computer the values look a bit better. huh.
Anyway, and suggestions?
Critique? Its meant to be Maude Garrett as Harley Quinn.

Symbol drawing.
Aka, you have no basics.

>>2496536
no no, symbol drawing means that he's not looking at what he's drawing. For example he saw a pyramid and just drew it. He was supposed to observe the lines, not the object, that's why the angles are wrong.
>>2496821
oh ok, thanks for clarifying.
>>2496701
Use more layers so you don`t have to erase as much. Also get rid of the chicken scratches, get confident in your lines.
>>2496704
It will help you a lot to just slow down with everything. Take your time deciding each time before you put your pencil down, is this in the correct position, do I need to take more measurements to be sure about this, how do I want to execute this stroke, just settle down and think things through. Believe it or not, there's more measuring in drawing than actual drawing. You can really see this with minimalist work that focuses on stroke economy.
When you first start drawing it's very easy to get caught up in the urge to just start making marks. You go over and over, hunting for what you think looks right but never really getting it. You forget to measure properly, to observe your subject looking for shapes, angles, distances, proportion. It just ends up messy and unworkable, you can't clean it up nicely or fix mistakes in your lay-in easily.
A good thing to keep in mind is the phrase 'measure twice, cut once'. These things take much more patience and focus than you realize when you first start out. Portraits take a long time to do properly, even for a good artist. People show off doing speed drawings on youtube of things they've pre-practiced, or already set up, but from start to finish a portrait can take well over 5 hours. That's without getting into some crazy rendering or painting.
Take your time, don't get carried away, think more about measuring and less about putting marks on the paper
>>2496832
Thats some great advice right here
>>2496665
i suggest you go to draw thread.
How do you guys go about eye construction? What are the basic lines of constructing an eye? Does construction differ depending on race? (Asian vs Caucasian)

Why do you think that if you don't mind me asking?
>>2496962
it's nosebro
what do you think

hope this works
I started fun with a pencil last week, been drawing these dudes
My construction is getting better but still sucks.
>>2497128
It would do you well to not necessarily drop construction, but maintain while you really focus on not symbol drawing. I personally went through drawing on the right side of the brain, but people hate that book because of the slow build up and pseudoscience, if you're not about that go through keys to drawing. Either of those two books are a must for any beginner, and your work really needs it. Keep at it, the lines look good but you can be more confident.
>>2497128
>taking reilly method seriously
it's a meme, son. Stick to Loomis
>>2497128
really, reilly method is not neccesary
knowing face muscle is important
but that method is just useless for me
>>2497128
I don't really think you should be tackling the Riley method just yet, your understanding of the rhythms that the Riley method shows is super all over the place.
If you are going to draw the Riley abstraction, make sure you study a Riley model for a while before trying to apply it.
But at the moment, you can't seem to utilise the method properly, so I suggest studying:
- Further study of fundamental forms of the head (basic construction - focus on studying eyes, and lips, those are your weakest points)
- Perspective studies (Norling's - Perspective made Easy / Scott Robertson's - How to draw / Still Life studies)
- The planes of the head
- Anatomy of the head (lower priority, just to help supplement your understanding of the planes and the Riley rhythms as the anatomy of the head tends to reflect the rhythms fairly well)

Keep on drawing anon - and stop symbol drawing those eyes!
Just a little request for some constructive criticism, if anyone would be so kind.
>>2497163
Gesture is okay, but still stiff. The lines tend to create conflicts in movement for the eye. Each line must flow into each other to create the sense of movement. I highly suggest you study the first chapter of Hampton's figure drawing to understand the fundamentals of gesture drawing.
You should then go and study more basic human anatomy so you can understand where the body bends and moves. Studying anatomy will also let you place more anatomical landmarks so you can have the form of your gesture actually come through. At the moment, it's difficult to get any sense of depth from your gestures, and thus movement sort of gets removed from the drawing.
Keep doing those gesture drawings, but make sure to prioritize basic anatomy.

It's not supposed to be realistic but I see what you mean. Pic is my reference
I'm really interested in getting into painting, but not so much in realism. My favorite movements are abstract-expressionism and surrealism, and I'd like to paint stuff like that...
How does this work? Should I just jump right into abstract painting, or do I *need* a base of realism first? Honestly, it feels wrong to jump into abstract painting without experience in more conventional styles first, but I'm 22 and have practically zero experience with painting.
In other words, how do I know when/if I'm ready for abstract painting?
Unrelated to the stuff above: Do the rewards of painting outweigh the gnawing sense of being terrible/unoriginal?

As a beginner, stick to doing life studies. Doing a study of something that stylized is useless.
If you able to realistic human face with imagination stylization is piece of cake
Problem is that is pretty difficult
Did some studies of eyes from pictures of casts. I get that the lids are supposed to wrap around a sphere but I just can't figure out how to apply it to real photos, like the one in the OP.
How am I doing?
>>2497541
Make it simpler so you can keep better track of your perspective. You're allowed to use horizon lines and putting down vanishing points.
>>2497324
You have to construct the eye socket, then the eyeball and then the eyelid. Learning anatomy will help a ton.
>>2497220
Proportions are wrong, learn anatomy and practice head construction to improve.
Please disregard the fact that this is Hitler for a minute.
How fucked is this? I think the lighting might be off but I don't know how to fix it without making the character look bare.
>>2497568
Where is the light source?
>>2497574
Middle-left. I should probably study how light falls on cloth and redo the lighting shouldn't I?
Can someone help me figure out wtf is wrong with this? I feel like the guy's hips/legs are too high up but I'm not sure how I'd go about lowering them. Or maybe the perspective is wrong, idk. Got frustrated and started doing some loomis studies instead, but would appreciate any feedback about wtf is going on here
head from imagination. does this show fundamentals?
here is the reference of proportion if you need basic information of loli or shota you might like it :^)
>>2497645
MODSMODSMODS
>>2497615
Dunno if you're working from reference, but here's a set of similar poses drawn by Mort Drucker that might help you study
>>2497686
Thanks anon! And yeah, I'm trying to work from a bunch of poses and sticking them together to produce the picture. I've changed it up a bit, because I think the legs on the guy look better, what do you think?
>get decent at observation drawing
>can draw literally nothing from imagination
>>2497691
It feels like the guy is on a different plane than the girl, or his head and torso are sinking into the ground plane. The girl and the book suggest that the ground plane is coming towards us more. We are closer to eye level, and it feels like I am laying on the ground with her. While the guy suggests that the ground plane is angled down more, I feel like he is laying on the ground while I am kneeling.
>>2497727
Thanks anon, I can see what you're talking about, a bit shit with perspective. Have you got any suggestions with how to fix it? The only thing I could think of is to physically bring the girl forward and making her bigger but I doubt that would fix the problem ugh
>>2497620
That's pretty good anon, but the mouth looks a bit too much to the left
>>2496824
thanks pally.
>>2497742
No you have to completely re draw one of the people to fit the perspective the other is at. Bringing her forward won't fix the fact that it is impossible to look at two people from separate angles in the same scene. Try to draw the ground plane as a floor underneath the girl and you'll see what's wrong.
>>2497873
Ah ha, I was afraid of that, I'll try redrawing the girl then, thanks again for the advice!
>>2497881
Super rough, but this is the idea anyway
>>2497934
Ooooh, thanks that clears it up tons! I like the pose left hand pose better, if it's not too much trouble would you mind redlining it over the girl just so I can what to change better? I've tried doing it myself and can't seem to get the pose right still (or find good reference pictures)
desu it's also cool if you don't want to/can't be arsed too either, you've helped loads anon!
How do paint nice texture? Is this drawing technique, brush setting or both?
How do I f. move brush to produce that shit, all the videos and shit do it just so naturally i cant comprehend it.
Also what is ideal canvas size? I work with 5000x5400px but for details it seems low.
Thanks
is it a scumbag move to rip images drawn by others to shirts that are just for personal use?
I don't plan to ever sell these, or create them in mass quantities, just some dumb shirts that I want for myself
>>2498087
Nah w/e just dont sell
Why do most books/some old masters say to start gesture before delving into anatomy? It doesn't make sense. There must be a reason or they wouldn't have said it.
>>2497724
I know your pain
Is there any way I can learn to draw hair without reference? Whenever I try drawing hair from imagination it always comes out wrong.
>>2498250
What process are you going through? Usually what people tell beginners is to seperate into three distinct forms and then draw (minimal) details on it such as stray strands, sheen from the light onto the hair, etc. only enough details to get the point across and not too much to make it distracting.
>>2498250
I've heard once that you should never try to come up with hair on your own, because unless you're a professional stylist, you're bound to mess it up.
Your best bet is to borrow heavily from reference, and get creative in little ways that aren't going to compromise the entire hair style. Using reference isn't bad. You just don't want to directly copy something unless you're doing a study.
The better answer though, is to just do a massive fuck ton of studies, and build up that visual library.
newfag here
How would I paint this with acrylic paint?
How hard would it be to paint?
I just started painting a motnth ago and I want to be able to paint this.

I don't think I've gotten to that chapter yet but thanks I will keep an eye on that! Also I feel the head is a little long but that's because I drew it leaning back on my seat, when I finished I straightened my back and realized it was out of proportion kek
