I've been drawing for about a month now and I just find it insanely boring to draw with pencil and paper. I doodled a bit with photoshop and tried to draw with my mouse and ended up getting a better eye than what I could do on paper. Granted I undid a lot of mistakes I still enjoyed it more doing it on the PC over paper. I used to do a lot of graphic design stuff back in the day for fun so I guess that is probably why I prefer digital. You're better than me at rendering so I can't help much, but I think the edges on the cylinder look a little off. The cube looks great, especially the cast shadow and the planes facing the viewer. I'm in a similar boat, anon. I've always wanted to learn to draw and would, every six months or so, decide to start, buy some pencils, steal some paper from the printer and then attempt to draw for a couple of hours before giving up in frustration and boredom. Something about sharpening pencils and ruining paper with erasers just irritates me.

Until about three weeks ago, when I used some online store credit to get an entry-level Wacom Intuos tablet (equivalent of US$125 in my currency). It was a bit weird for the first hour or so, but I'm basically used to using it now. And I've been drawing every day (up to perspective chapter in the Edwards book) and actually enjoying it way more than I did on paper.

I'm just kinda worried that I'm ruining my chance of ever getting good by starting with digital when everyone says to start analogue.

Push the values on the left claw, especially where it's blending into the leg. Try to push contrast throughout the picture.

Paint it's bottom. It wouldn't be completely dark, there would be some reflected light

Try to think about using value to show the change in distance from the front to the back of the scene

Having fun drawing is going to help you retain your interest but it's probably not going to help your ability to draw in the long run.

Loomis is boring but keep at it. Retaining the information in those books will carry you far.

At your level there is absolutely nothing wrong with using a ruler to help with straight lines, especially in a piece like that where perspective is important.

If it's really bothering you, block out some time and just draw lines every day. Line confidence and stability are things you can grind out with some patience.

I've always felt like gestures are actually a pretty terrible beginner exercise.

Better you get the hang of forms and proportions first. Yes, they'll be stiff, but I think you'll learn more from doing some stiff figure drawings and constructions than you will from dozens of 30 second gestures at the start. A good gesture is basically depending on letting your muscle memory and intuition take the reins, and if you don't have muscle memory or intuition it's not going to do you much good.

That comes along the way the same way "style" does because if you think about it, they're not very different. Focus on your fundamentals for now and your toons will emerge from the way you draw certain things.

You're going to be discouraged when you draw from imagination because it's a fairly difficult task to do, even for people a little above beginner level. But the important thing is to keep grinding.

So at your current stage, you should honestly just draw whatever the fuck you want. Keep pushing until you obtain solid muscle control and organic lines. Proportions can come with time, you're a little ahead of yourself right now.

It would be safer for you to find something else to draw instead of doing gestures and anatomy right off the bat. I started with forming skulls and faces out of basic shapes, but do what works for you.

YOU ARE ALWAYS IMPROVING. Never once think to yourself that you aren't, because you'll only not improve if you convince yourself that. Stay confident, keep drawing. Start with whatever you want if you're only a week in. I began with skulls and faces for 2months/6-7hours a day, because it was fun for me. I also highly suggest using your drawing tool to get the angles of objects, even possibly using the tool along with your thumb to try to measure objects.

Redraw it, you don't have to shade it, but redraw the image, I am sure you can see some of the faults of how much you see certain shapes to how high others come in relation to one another.

Literally everything you see is reflected light on 3d structures.

A first good step imo is to learn how to draw the 5 basic shapes in perspective.
Elipses, Boxes, Cones Pyramids and Tubes. Everything consits of these shapes, or a combination of them. Once you can draw them, and get some sense for perspective, you can basically draw anything.

It will help you a lot to just slow down with everything. Take your time deciding each time before you put your pencil down, is this in the correct position, do I need to take more measurements to be sure about this, how do I want to execute this stroke, just settle down and think things through. Believe it or not, there's more measuring in drawing than actual drawing. You can really see this with minimalist work that focuses on stroke economy.

When you first start drawing it's very easy to get caught up in the urge to just start making marks. You go over and over, hunting for what you think looks right but never really getting it. You forget to measure properly, to observe your subject looking for shapes, angles, distances, proportion. It just ends up messy and unworkable, you can't clean it up nicely or fix mistakes in your lay-in easily.

A good thing to keep in mind is the phrase 'measure twice, cut once'. These things take much more patience and focus than you realize when you first start out. Portraits take a long time to do properly, even for a good artist. People show off doing speed drawings on youtube of things they've pre-practiced, or already set up, but from start to finish a portrait can take well over 5 hours. That's without getting into some crazy rendering or painting.

Take your time, don't get carried away, think more about measuring and less about putting marks on the paper

It would do you well to not necessarily drop construction, but maintain while you really focus on not symbol drawing. I personally went through drawing on the right side of the brain, but people hate that book because of the slow build up and pseudoscience, if you're not about that go through keys to drawing. Either of those two books are a must for any beginner, and your work really needs it. Keep at it, the lines look good but you can be more confident.

Gesture is okay, but still stiff. The lines tend to create conflicts in movement for the eye. Each line must flow into each other to create the sense of movement. I highly suggest you study the first chapter of Hampton's figure drawing to understand the fundamentals of gesture drawing.

You should then go and study more basic human anatomy so you can understand where the body bends and moves. Studying anatomy will also let you place more anatomical landmarks so you can have the form of your gesture actually come through. At the moment, it's difficult to get any sense of depth from your gestures, and thus movement sort of gets removed from the drawing.

Keep doing those gesture drawings, but make sure to prioritize basic anatomy.

It feels like the guy is on a different plane than the girl, or his head and torso are sinking into the ground plane. The girl and the book suggest that the ground plane is coming towards us more. We are closer to eye level, and it feels like I am laying on the ground with her. While the guy suggests that the ground plane is angled down more, I feel like he is laying on the ground while I am kneeling.

No you have to completely re draw one of the people to fit the perspective the other is at. Bringing her forward won't fix the fact that it is impossible to look at two people from separate angles in the same scene. Try to draw the ground plane as a floor underneath the girl and you'll see what's wrong.

Is there any way I can learn to draw hair without reference? Whenever I try drawing hair from imagination it always comes out wrong.

What process are you going through? Usually what people tell beginners is to seperate into three distinct forms and then draw (minimal) details on it such as stray strands, sheen from the light onto the hair, etc. only enough details to get the point across and not too much to make it distracting.

I've heard once that you should never try to come up with hair on your own, because unless you're a professional stylist, you're bound to mess it up.

Your best bet is to borrow heavily from reference, and get creative in little ways that aren't going to compromise the entire hair style. Using reference isn't bad. You just don't want to directly copy something unless you're doing a study.

The better answer though, is to just do a massive fuck ton of studies, and build up that visual library.

I don't think I've gotten to that chapter yet but thanks I will keep an eye on that! Also I feel the head is a little long but that's because I drew it leaning back on my seat, when I finished I straightened my back and realized it was out of proportion kek
