How would you go about making a 2D character into a rendered painting? While still keeping the style or aestetic of that character? Here are some examples.

Anyway these are some example. They aren't heavily rendered to the point of realism, but they are kind of between the line of a rendering and stylization. I think what I"m struggling the most is the facial structure, at least bringing it from 2D into 3D.

I've got to say if you look at a lot of the popular rendered anime artists who go for semi realism in the body and use graduated shading giving form to limbs and the torso a lot of them keep the face a uniform flat tone and don't shade it at all its something I see a lot and I've never seen anyone mention before. I'll try find examples when I'm not on mobile.

I've heard the term "CG celshading" tossed around, don't know exactly if that's how all of the popular Eastern artists do it, but I'll post what I found and see if it relates to what you're talking to.

well, put some light on us

looks like just its done with blur tool or whatever, that mixes colors around. Basically you paint in your colors and then paint in blur over them with blur tool. They do look good though. I would like to learn to do this myself
>>
OP you need to rephrase your question using less ambiguous terms. Or at the least less internet jargon-y.

All of these pictures are rendered and all of them are 2d. Some of them are more stylized than others and some of them achieve more depth than others.

What are you asking? Do you want to know how to render, as in texturing and shading or are you asking about making (photo)real renditions of stylized characters?
>>
>>2483782
Painted. Cel shading is way cleaner, no fading and with a clear edge.
>>
>>2483803
So Borderlands isn't cel shading?
>>
>>2483803
>>2483989
Cel-shading is a technique for shading computer generated 3D models. There are none in this thread.
>>
>>2483989
You'll be amused to learn the thick black outlines were left intentionally in as a stylistic choice and can be disabled through the configuration files.

I guess I'm looking for something more photo real of stylized characters. Of course it doesn't have to be realism, but closer to that than it's stylized form.

I know what you mean, it's the so called "deviantart tier" art style where they go for a glossy, "shiny" shading on the skin and use strong colors for the eyes, hair, etc., and make everything look sorta 3D.

See >>2479207

IMO /ic/ tends to be overly critic about this style, i personally think it looks really good and is a good look to aspire for, as many artists got famous doing this kind of stuff.
As to how one would achieve such a style, i wouldn't really know, as i draw traditional and this kind of art probably uses a lot of software effects and whatnot.
>>
You mean turning simplified cartoon characters into realistic people with consideration for what that character would look like in 3D?
>>
>>2483602
Step 1. Draw animu
Step 2. Use soft brush, vary between the brush sizes and render manually such as painting
Step 3. Paint over outlines

Annndddd you're done, easy no?

Yes there is. It's just way too light considering how bright and close the source light should be.

I would make a sketch first, then find some references, that's it
>>
>>2484079
I did a image search and still couldn't find the artist. Are you gonna help an anon out, or just be a faggot?

I guess I was wondering more about the facial structure and how to apply the same looking face.
>>
>>2484629
realism on anime face?
>>
>>2484634

2D faces lack facial structure so I was wondering how you would figure out and solve a rendered painting of a 2D face.
>>
>>2484629
Look for real people that look like them. I only sketch with fucking mechanical pencil in my free time negate that's all I got but I only like rendering my favorite characters with realistic features. Look up people with similar features to your 2d characters and go from there. Realize that 2d stylized people don't have features that normal people do. Anime characters are heavily stylized, so if you want them to remain as attractive as they are, with their super simple features, you'll have to sacrifice realism. If you want to make them realistic then as I said, get references that look like them, hopefully without a bunch of filters applied to the photo.
>>
>>2484629
i feel like difference between this and my works is stronger use of colours
>>
>>2484686
Don't know your work, but definitely color is a big thing.
I do a blog where I analyze color choices in good pictures and they're highly planned out.
I don't think anyone successful chooses colors without logically figuring out what works first and then subjectively looking at it.

Thanks a bunch senpai

God I fucking adore this guy's work
>>
>>2484649
2D faces do not lack facial structure, it's just implied instead of rendered.
>>
>>2485924
look for sideview shots from whatever show they're from, even better look for scenes where the camera goes around the characters face
>>
>>2483602
How to tender eyelashes and hair like that?
