>>
>>2466651
It's quite messy. Although I do see smaller strokes, the lines feel very fat. Using thin fineliners kept my urban drawings more tidy. Keep it more simple. You're trying to put in a lot of detail and the folds of tents, but you've failed in creating any kind of depth.

yeah im trying to get better at freehanding it. i could just put a line to indicate where they go but the girls don't seem to care they come out wonky sometimes *shrugs*

usually i try a freehand one first, then it comes out bad and i just ask to do a second drawing that actually has some construction to it. this one came out pretty good on the first try though and she had to get to a college class soon.

the drawing of catt was from a photo that was pretty distorted. its accurate, but the one of the barista i agree is wonky.

Hello my beautiful friends, would anyone be interested in drawing something for me?

There's this series out called Red Rising, it's really good but it's relativity unknown so not much fan art exists of it.

Would any of you be able to draw/sketch over this? Taking whatever liberties you wanted of course, that's the purpose of fan art

Also if you like drew the wings in mirror so it was a full set that'd be even cooler, I think it'd look awesome

ahhh, was kinda wishing you had a version with the top of your head intact. I really hate having portraits with the head cut off.

I'm legitimately curious about the painting thing.

PS: You're in my ref folder now. Where you belong.

>your mom if she was paid to advertise that painter

>>
>>2467417
Like she had a painter over and then she gave out his business card on facebook. I thought it was odd or like super friendly like the painter is part of the family or something.

It's not that important desu.
>>
>>2466129
The rendering itself looks good, the hatching is pretty nice, but the construction of the head is lacking. It's specially apparent by the deformed ear. The ear is way too big when it should be aligned with the eyebrows and the lower point of the nose, the shape is deformed, as I said, and it's too far on the back of the head. This last detail is importante because it looks like the neck ends at the jaw, instead of the base of the cranium, and this together with the flat top of his head make his head flat, as if he was just face and neck.
His shoulders are also way too low, and his nose is too cartoony and it looks like you don't understand how it's constructed.

Thanks for your response - I had a lot of trouble measuring that one because the head was rotated, the neck was flexed, and the head shape was odd. I think the rendering is all I could do to save it at that point, but I wrote a lot of notes and studied measurement and construction pretty hard after that one. I have a long way to go before I can note down landmarks and features with satisfactory accuracy, but it gets a little easier each time.

This one's from today. Felt a lot more confident doing it. It's black bronze, so the highlights are pretty sharp.

Don't abuse black. In fact, avoid it as much as possible.
You need more values in the middle of the road, the shadow doesn't completely hide every detail from view. There's still stuff going on in there. I probably went a bit too light on this but you get the idea ( I think ) that you can use your mid tones and some lighter darks to get some definition into the whole thing.

I want to find a focal subject for this image.

The idea is that some kind of industrial supernatrual event has taken place. The broken barrier suggests that an area formerly under control is now unchecked. Something awful has happened.

But this has to keep in line with the aesthetic of the image - sterile and unnatural.

Also I want to keep the shaded patch on the fence, currently cast by the undefined dark object behind it. Don't know what that object is yet... was thinking of maybe a big sign with a worning on it...

If anyone has any narrative suggestions for the above then I'm open

So what do you do to maintain an interest in art? I thought I cared, but I haven't drawn hardly anything in almost five weeks. And I've been drawing for years. Do you guys have like friends who draw or do art-related events or what? I don't know how to handle this because I've never felt so apathetic towards drawing before, and this is after I got deeply involved with developing a comic of my own, with characters and a setting and everything.

I think the comp is ok actually, aside from the leading lines being slightly confused. In between the ship and the cliff would be my focal point, but that or the cliff or ship etc would be good too. The figures and left side of frame lead my eye more towards the cliff itself, though that might be just me.

Values are more what I'd focus on. Looks great but some more nice highlights like that bit of sea spray.

Why the fuck is uncle sam holding the rifle from the top? The good news is the right way is easier and less awkward do draw foreshortened. Next time look for reference, if you couldn't find reference for the rifle bayonet stab, you could look for a spear, it's the same kind of stab.
Uncle sam's right leg is also too high on the image, and it looks like it's far up the road.
The illustration has other problems, it's kinda bad, but it works as a banner. Specially for a small twitch where the guy didn't pay you for the work.

having such a hard line between the light and shadow gives the impression of a flat plane/edge which looks a little strange on the nose/chin. Also unless she's wearing a headband, the end of those bangs needs to be broken up into a hair texture, even a straight cut isn't perfectly flat.

Doesn't seem like you know the structure of the skull to well. Without me even looking at you that side plane is huge. I would study that for a while.

Side note, I also wouldn't learn draftsmanship in oil, it'll be incredibly expensive in the long run compared to learning value/edge/proportion with pencil and paper.

You're not leading the eye well enough with your composition. The image practically ends with the figure with the light, and then you have a bunch of dead space on the right side. I moved things around to try and frame the image a little better.

I
Poor construction, no gesture. In the original she has has a hunched back which naturally shortens the appearance of the neck and makes her look a bit..Coy. Or shy. In yours it sticks up like a giraffe. She conveys a completely different attitude in your study. Face looks bitchy and unappealing. No likeness as a result of not paying close enough attention to proportion and structure. Value range too tame and colors have the wrong temperature.

I think you should spend a little more time on it. There are parts where it looks like you just said "you know what, fuck it" and didn't even bother to look at the ref any more. I feel like you got ahead of yourself and skipped trying to nail the structure and gesture first.
Even when you looked at some established artists studies, they look a bit crappy in the beginning.

Well I admire your reach, there's a ton holding this back. Everything is grey, grey, grey, except the girl who's distractingly oversaturated, and two light sources. If that's Stannis, it sure doesn't look like him, and his head is too big. The armor is rendered nicely.

Composition is wonky; he's really low and a bit too left in the frame, and it looks like he's gonna bump his head into the statue. The buildings all blend into each other so it's not clear how it's constructed. and obligatory "where is her hand going"

While tonally very different, see what you can take from a similar Mullins painting.

For the last drawing: The light pinks, reds, and greens in the valley beneath the house are confusing and don't work well to suggest that the house is further in the background than they are. You could play around with the colours and make the house lighter to fade away, perhaps?

Not them but look at it this way: there's a reason why you have to take both a written and practical test to get a driver's license. Or why when you learn equations in math class you then have to solve dozens of problems using that equation. There are many things you can learn about by reading but need to practice to learn to *do* them. Art is like that. You know what the goal is, you may know how it's done, but it simply takes time and repetition to truly get the most out of that knowledge.

You really should use your lines more efficiently to add form to your drawings. The hatching doesn't work because you're using a uniform line weight without following the bumps of the muscles. And on top of that you're outlining everything you draw in a thick lines that just completely flattens everything. This is especially noticeable in her hand, the fingers don't look any farther forward than her palm becuase they're drawn the exact same thickness and darkness of line.
>also your obsession with her is really creepy

>>2471997
>The hatching doesn't work
what hatching? its just meant to be a graphic outliney kinda thing. i don't bother trying to add form to drawings done from photos because it doesnt teach me anything id just be faking it. don't fall for the imagination meme.

my hand drawings usually have form represented and i've done plenty of drawings that were only form practice ( but those were done from life)

Your figures are not in the same perspective as the rest and neither is the floor. There is something real strange going on with your perspective.

Pic related are the perspective lines I used. I was worrying how I'd draw the characters.

If you draw a line from your vanishing point to the top of one of the dude's shoulders, extending that line it should hit the top of his other shoulder as well assuming he isn't leaning to his left or right.

You should see the same thing with the corners of his jaw. Think of his head existing in a box that's the same height, width and depth as the largest points of his head. That box is parallel to the ground plane, but above the horizon. This means we should be seeing the underside of it.

You've drawn every portion of each character (knees, hips, elbows, shoulders, head, etc) as if that's the horizon (or if a very long lens was used). This conflicts with the room either way.

Thanks heaps. You have motivated me to draw a cube for my characters in the next drawing and align their parts to the vanishing point, not just the background.

I only recently started using the vanishing point lines for backgrounds, I guess it didn't occur to me to use them on characters also.

By the next drawing I post here I will apply these practices.
>>
>>2472307

Not that anon but you'll want your VP higher. Visualize your characters as cubes that must adhere to the same vp as the furniture they're sitting on. Right now you drew them as if we're viewing them perfeclty level from the side whereas we can look onto the surfaces pf the furniture

You're going to have to go back to the books to practice perspective. You've done some things right, but you've done some things wrong. A good mode of thought is to imagine the horizon line as the height of your eye level. In this picture, our eye level seems to be at about knee height of the green dude. I know this because the horizon line intersects with his knees. The horizon is basically an infinite distance away and if you are looking straight ahead, parallel to the ground the horizon will always be at eye level. So if, in the image, the viewer were to stand up, the horizon line would move up with them. Ok?

So in your picture your characters, the table, shelf and ceiling all are correct according to your vanishing point. The problem is with where you have placed the bottoms of the back and side walls. You placed them along the horizon line which implies (based on how high our eye height is off of the ground) that the bottoms of the walls are basically an infinite distance away.

If you were to look only at the ceiling, walls and floor and pretend the table, characters and things were not in the image. The perspective looks correct, because as I said before the horizon is at eye level. If the bottoms of the wall are flush with the horizon line that implies your eye height is right on the floor.

So you have two correct, but conflicting, perspectives in this picture. One from on the floor, and one from about 2 feet up.

To fix this move the bottom of the back wall down to about the height of that blue dash near the green dude's calf. Then from there just fix the side walls, shorten the bar and bench so they fit in the room better
and you're good to go.

Also do what the other anon said and put your characters into perspective as well.

Draw with energy and confidence. Make random thumbnails with a large brush and form it into something real from your mind. Draw faces from your mind. Go outside and observe the world around you to get new ideas.

When you set sail on the sea of improvement, you can see the beach you left from, the distance you made. When you're near to your goal you can see the beach you want to get to, but sometimes there's a moment in between where you don't see any land. All you see is the sea. That's where you're at right now, all artists face it eventually. But just keep drawing with confidence, keep rowing.

Is there anything inherently wrong with the way I am constructing? Are there any glaring errors? Should I just keep reading the book at the slow pace I currently am?

draw your horizon before dropping down a ton of circles in your shapes that have no meaning.

Just make an effort to understand pic related.
>>
>>2472307
you made your HORIZON LINE be where the FLOOR MEETS THE WALL

Perspective is a way of solidifying the body in space of the observer. Perspective means that we have a very clear understanding of where we are in this space looking at these characters, it doesn't matter where the floor and wall meet.

The horizon line should be where our eye level is. It would be an imaginary line. Our horizon line can't be the floor line, because for that to be the case we would have to have our heads on the floor, looking along its length.

When I went back and did that cylinder out of a square box thing I learned in the book I realized all I needed to to do on the right arm was to construct a box. I was a little bit mentally tired at that point, but what I'm totally lost on is going up from the eye-level line.

Does Loomis cover this stuff in his book? Should I just stop playing around with perspective and figures for now?
