Looking into edge control should help with the painting side of things. Honestly you have to learn how form interacts with light before you can make stylistic choices like cel shading. Ctrl Paint would be a nice starting point for basic fundamentals like that.

Try to keep a midline in mind when drawing the face. Some of the features are skewing to the left and right. Also, eyes tend to be one eye's width apart. They're too close in the image.
Try to think of composing the image with value, too. Well known paintings typically have 3-4 value ranges. Look up Harold Speed for more info on that.

The problem is that most of those Anime inspired western drawfags like you just doesn't understand all the subtility of the Anime style, and add some random semi realistic features over what you think it is limited to like the big eyes.

Style isn't just subjective, Anime style looks good for reasons.

And to be honest, that's not even the main problem here, let's just ignore the faces for a moment. You try to go with thin lines but too many stuffs are wrong, and the coloring is cheap and random. Anime style isn't a thing. Is it Toriyama? Oda? Kishimotto? Oh Great? Muria? Ishiwatari? Shaft? Manglobe? Ghibli? An artists style is their signature, and it's entirely derrived by their personal tastes in other artists.

My own style is influenced by Ishiwatari, Kubo, and Kamitani, with some western influences.

This particular project takes from its inspirations: Bakemonogatari, and Bleach, while still adhering to my style. However, the cell shading is done for ease of labor when coloring, as well as visual style. Yeah, I can render, but I'm not gonna be rendering 100+ panels per chapter.

First of all, those faces are really poorly drawn. The artist who drew that doesn't understand that he needs to draw the underside of the jaw at certain angles. It's a common problem a lot of anime artists have.
Furthermore, the style is completely different from your. The characters in that picture have long, pointy chins. Your character has virtually no chin, and the end point of the jaw is far too high up, meaning the jaw would rotate around the level of her eye.

If you want to fix it, just move the entire line that makes up the jaw and chin down a little bit.

the problem i see here is that there are a lot of details that don't add anything to your drawings. the hair and clothing folds especially are just extremely busy and distracting. when people see japanese art, something that often stands out is the amount of detail that the artists use, but the artists always have reasons for the lines they put down, they're always deliberate. look at ishiwatari's work and see how few lines he uses for his character's clothing and hair. even in kamitani's beautifully detailed paintings he puts down just what's necessary to sell the design.

look at your designs and see where things could be cleaned up and simplified into recognizable shapes. that isn't to say that you have to get rid of all the details or anything, look at kaoru mori's art from a bride's story: amazingly detailed clothing designs, but very simple and easy to read shapes on the surface.

you have your style and that's great, like you said, everyone has one and it acts like their signature in most cases, but design fundamentals and appeal are universal qualities that great artists share

This is good critique. I'll screencap this to further it. In fact, I very much agree. One of my main beefs with the way I drew the MC was that I found him a bit boring. It's more to do with design than style, but I agree 100% and it's the sort of critique I was hoping to get. Since design is something I'm looking to improve.

First of all, the picture you're comparing yours to is poorly drawn.
Second, that face is at a completely different angle. Yours is from the front, the other one is from above and slightly to the side. When a face is at a downward angle, the lower portion of the face looks smaller. In addition to that, the jawline moves further up.
You should be able to tell from your overlap that the parts don't match. Your characters jaw lines up with the other character's cheek.

I also agree that the boy isn't wrong himself per se but compared to the rest he's a bit out of place? It's as if he got copy pasted in your drawing, the style doesn't really match. Can you see it? I recommend pivoting your drawing / looking at it from other angles.

I like the general composition otherwise, it's nice.
