I've posted this on one of the LAS boards but I guess you didn't see it.
I look at your work now and then, and you seem to be at about the same skill level as me.(you are better but you also draw much more than me)
My question is, do you consider yourself as an artist? meaning, do you really see yourself doing it for life?
>>
>>2444787
Is it just me or that's pretty slow?
>>
>>2444844
i don't really know, iv always kinda just done it for me.
i kinda have already been drawing almost half my life (only record as far back as 2008 in that pic)
only recently have i drawn "everyday". before LAS i only drew maybe once a week, and it was a binge, i would start a piece and finish it in one night until i was happy with it. then no drawing for another week or 2.
>>2444845
yea i am the king of the plateau.
i mean, i jump genre on a whim
>sept 2013 i was really into realism ect
>got bored of that
>the cancer that kills my art progression is always the comfort zone of anime, which you can see is the constant thing that keeps resurfacing over the years and slowing me down. cant help it.

you bois should post some progress too, beef out the thread so it is not just about me.

Stepped up my study game from riding hood onwards just this month. Hoping for some better progress from here on out.
>>
>>2444873
I can't believe how you're still so bad at basic proportions. Whenever something of yours has correct proportions, it looks pretty neat, but that sadly happens rarely. You should really try to focus on that more.
>>

3 months is not enough time to share any improvement. It shows too - these all look to be of similar quality.

These progression charts work better if you should yearly progress.

You must be the other swedebro here. Never seen anyone except you or myself. Problem is, and don't take it as an insult pls, that your style reflects that you're a p12:a (I'm guessing one of those pics is a self-portrait). You really need to step away from looking solely at other concept art and for a while indulge in another art genre, take your pick. Because right now, your "style" needs to man up like 600% more. Get more mature in art and how you look at it for inspo (who cares about your age anyway, the younger you are the better!), and you'll be alright. I can see considerable progress.

i prefer the drawing from january. you haven't gotten better at drawing so it's still essentially the same skill level. but what i like about january is that the drawing is smaller, and you still don't know what to do with rendering large planes like cheeks and foreheads. the values are also more interesting from january, but you still need to push whites as far as you push darks.
>>
>>2446124
>you still don't know what to do with rendering large planes like cheeks and foreheads.
i should've continued... BUT you manage it better when you can reduce it down to a few brushstrokes in a smaller drawing. you kind of just slapped a texture on the cheek in march instead of rendering it.

you never want your improvement to be boiled down to "found some texture brushes"... it would do you a lot of good to draw from life and actually get better at drawing.

>If so, you still shouldn't use them in a progress picture.

>>
>>2448654
Yea but you improved by an extreme amount, I would really like to know how you were studying to achieve such improvement? Did you just go NEET for a year and draw all day or were there some specific things you were doing that helped you improve?
>>
>>2448638
Man, fuck you. I wish I started so early. I'm 21 and only started like a year ago, plus I have so much less free time now that I'm in college.
>>
>>2448660
I don't see the problem. When I posted those online I credited Kittelsen, and I don't claim ownership of the ideas at all, just the act of drawing my visions of them. I make no money off it either.

And as for posting them in a progress collection, why not? People post master copies/studies, photo studies, why shouldn't it be okay for me to do my own spin on a master study? And also they are posted among original compositions too.

Also, Disney does this too, as posted above.
>>
>>2448664
Are you retarded or something? Who the hell replies to valid criticism with something as vapid and childish as that?
Also, if I wanted to target someone I'm jealous of, it would be >>2448428 , because the progress from 2014 to 2015 is inhuman.
>>
>>2448672
Because it's not valid criticism. People take inspiration from existing classics all the time. As long as they don't trace it and acknowledge they were purposely copying the composition of "blank" because they liked it, there's literally no harm other than from some random guy like you getting upset over it.
>>
>>2448670
>And as for posting them in a progress collection, why not?
because people don't realize that concept/composition/colors/etc aren't yours, and it gives a misleading impression of your contributions and achievement.
>>
>>2448680
No it doesn't. Seriously, you have no idea what you're talking about, stop posting.

I'm sure you also think photo manipulation is "cheating".
>>
>>2448679
There's nothing wrong with doing studies, but it's not something that should be posted in a progress picture, exactly because of situations like this, and because it doesn't really represent the true progress as compared to an original work.
If you do a study and give credit, that's perfectly fine, but that information is not passed on in pictures like these.
>>
>>2448680
I'm sorry about that. I still don't see why it would be any different from posting a master study or a photo study, usually they're not credited in a progress picture either.

But I know for a fact that as long as I'm not claiming these ideas as my own, I have the right to do this. I have spoken to several of my art teachers about it, and they encourage students to try to develop other artists ideas, because that's essentially what we will be doing in the concept art industry, especially in animation. As long as we are honest about it, and give credit.
>>
>>2448681
>>2448655
>>2448664
I really hope you're not the original artist posting these comments, because then you're a delusional, self-centered asshole.
>>
>>2448682
It still showcases the artists' rendering and drawing ability perfectly fine. Just copying a composition doesn't mean the person is going to do it successfully. Even if it's not from their imagination 100%, I can still tell this artist knows how to digitally paint, understands lighting, understands texture, and understands anatomy.

>>2448685
I'm not. Just responding to someone who is zoning in on one person posting a picture they disapprove of as if that negates their entire progression sheet.
>>
>>2448683
I don't know what your intention was, but it can come off as dishonest, which is why people react to it.
Some other guy had a good solution to it, as he color coded his pictures with dots, to signify whether it was imagination, reference or a study/copy.
In fact, here he is: >>2445668
>>
>>2448687
Actually, it makes it difficult to know what's copied and what's not, particularly because of the variation in quality. If you look at the picture directly above the one with the horse, the quality is a lot worse, so it makes you wonder if all the decent pictures are referenced or copied.

I'm not saying the artist is trying to be dishonest, but I'm saying that shit like this happens if people discover copied art without a reference to the originals, particularly on /ic/.
>>
>>2448692
But if you compare the two horse pieces, aside from subject matter and composition, they're very different. The colours in his are more saturated and have more contrast, the brushwork and rendering, especially on the characters, is much more defined and developed, and the character's expressions are even changed to tell the story better. All of these things show the artist's skill, even when compared to the original piece. It's his own distinct take on it, he couldn't have come up with what he did if all he did was copy Kittelsen's illustration. Just look at the rendering on the horse's mane, look at the gesture of it, the knowledge of the musculature, and the boy's clothing was changed too. It was all designed and developed independently of the original.

If you seriously look at that piece and then Kittelsen's and think to yourself "well maybe he isn't that good afterall!" then you no doubt don't know what you're talking about.
>>
>>2448707
>his
Considering the proliferance of young boys and the clear Disney influence, I doubt that's a guy.

Regardless, I've seen plenty of artists who are decent at rendering, but can't draw worth shit without reference. The only point I was trying to make was that studies should be marked, unless they want this discussion every time they post something.
>>
>>2448714
Bitch please, like one guy marked his studies in this thread. No one cares when someone plainly copies a painting or a picture, but when someone brings something original to an old painting there's suddenly an uproar?

The artist posted plenty of original works, judge them based on that if it's such a big deal.
>>
>>2448721
Well, enjoy the future shitposting then.

I'm gonna regret this. My life is cringe. But seriously, if you really want to help me out here, be as direct as possible. I'm 20, and I'm nowhere close to where I should be artistically. It's real bad, /ic/. Also, very hesitant to post this here because the global rules violation, but I need to stop stagnating. Give it to me, /ic/, look at that long shit I took, and tell me what you think.
>>
>>2449118

If what you've posted is a sample of all the subject matter you do, stop just doing fanart of shitty cartoons for a while and actually study from life. Even if you want to stylize, having a basis in reality is important.
>>
>>2449118
I feel bad for you because this pic is probably going to end up in a cringe thread, but you seem aware that you need to improve. Honestly dude all you need to start is in the sticky, just go there and take it seriously.
>>
>>2449118
Nah, this isn't bad enough to warrant cringe. I also see
You at least try, and I see some improvement on your color choices.
But the others are right. Start actually studying the fundamentals. You really don't know just how bad you are until you actually try to draw a human face for the first time.
>>
>>2449065
Damn, how much did you draw/study during 2013?This is simply great.
>>
>>2449138
>I feel bad for you
Fuck that pussy shit
>this pic is probably going to end up in a cringe thread
... Honestly, I needed that. Thank you. The sticky isn't all that helpful, desu. Do I start with gesture, values, anatomy, poses, life, color? Also, what people mean by "studying" is just copying and learning from it? There has to be a more efficient way, no?
>>2449132
>Even if you want to stylize
Fuck that cancer, I haven't thought of stylizing anything, but if my art's that shitty that it appears that way, I need a lot more work than I thought.
>>2449167
>some improvement on your color choices.
For three of them, I literally used dark purples, and saturated blues. If that's not the definition of a comfort zone.. Also, study which fundamentals? Like, draw a human face 1000x? Then I'll just have a nicely rendered face to a stiff, ill-perspective, disproportionate human body.
>>
>>2444787
Hey man, I dig your work, but I think you aren't pushing yourself as much as you should be. You seem to spend too much time posting your progression and not enough time actually improving.

I'd recommend getting away from internet boards for a while. The attention you seem to crave is getting in the way of your ability to succeed as an artist.

Sorry for being so harsh but I just feel like you need a slap in the face for you to realize the trap you are getting yourself into. If you intend on taking art seriously, I could see you being a complete badass in the industry.

I hope you see my post for what its worth. Keep the grind alive, man. Good luck.
>>

>>
>>2448208

dude your knight stuff is awesome, keep doing that pump out a ton, and get faster and better at doing it and you're gold in no time!
>>
>>2449176
>For three of them, I literally used dark purples, and saturated blues. If that's not the definition of a comfort zone..
Your values greatly differ from 2013, which were absolute shit. And the colors were pretty bland.
The over-saturation is definitely an issue, but at least you realized that different colors exist. Your Undertale fanart shows the best variation of everything else, and probably is your most balanced and easiest on on the eyes of all that you've showcased.

>Also, study which fundamentals?
All of them.

>Like, draw a human face 1000x?
No. If that's what pops into your head when someone says fundamentals then something is seriously wrong.

For example, Perspective and Gesture are both very important and will set a foundation for all of your learning.

Perspective helps you make things look accurate and believable, gesture helps you make things look fluid and meaningful.

Anatomy and proportion are also important things to learn, but become a lot easier the more knowledge you have of the former two mentioned.

Lighting and color knowledge come like the icing on the study cake once you've grasped the other bits. Knowing form gives you an instinct for where to place shadow. Studying from life in different lighting environments helps you to know what colors make sense.

There are many things to learn, and they all support each other in one way or another. It's up to you how to tackle them. There are many resources out there, and many techniques and "lesson plans", but no matter what you do as long as you are making a dedicated effort to learn something,a nd not just drawing mindlessly without any sort of reference you will improve.

>>
>>2450611

Well I fuck around way more than I should and you probably shouldn't follow my example too closely, but I'll try to sum up.

I try to draw at least 30 minutes a day and on motivated days I can do 2-3 hours. In my opinion consistency is more important than setting up an 8hr/day regime and burning out, but I hope to amp things up a bit when I'm on a lighter schedule. I tend to do photostudies rather than copying other art, though I do want to get around to doing master studies sometimes. My drawings without references are still crap, but some knowledge from doing studies does carry over.

I skimmed Fun with a Pencil and didn't like it much (but I think what Loomis teaches in it is still useful knowledge and I've read bits of his other books), I read Bridgman's drawing from life a little more thoroughly and studied some of the drawings in it. I read perspective made easy (though my perspective is still trash and I should probably revisit it - it's a good book for making perspective less intimidating though). I thought Proko's tutorials were really handy and succinct introductory materials, I also watched bits and pieces of Sycra (I don't agree with everything he says but he's got some good stuff) and speedpaintings.

Mainly I tried to focus on drawing for fun. I study, but study things I find interesting, and I have a giant reference folder that I browse for things to do studies of when I'm feeling uninspired. I draw lots of knights and skulls and do plenty of fan-art. I'm a dirty hobbyist with no professional aspirations so I don't have much pressure on gitting gud ASAP. Besides, you can always apply your fundamentals to interesting subjects, they don't always need to be dull exercises. Just try and identify your weak-points and think of ways to address them while doing things you like.

Great thread! Watching ppl getting better is really motivating. :)
Anyway here is mine, I got my first tablet 2008. 2011 I didin't do anything, but during 2012-2013 I started taking art seriously and decided to make my living with it.
2014 I started studying hard, and my skills started to improve much faster.

Now I'm 23 and practicing even harder. My ultimate goal is same with many other artists, to make MTG card. If I keep working my ass off, I believe I can get there someday!

Thanks for the kind words!
Yeah I'm 100% self taught, or taught by interwebz.

I started by watching feng zhu's design cinema videos from youtube and learned about industry and fundamentals. I have done photostudies and still lifes, but I learned a lot by studying other artists works. Not always just painting, but rather opening it in photoshop and checking the values and stuff like that. Comparing to my paintings and trying to figure out what they do differently.

but yeah I'm super tired so I'm not sure if anything I type makes sense. Some names you should check from youtube are Feng Zhu, Dave Rapoza and Anthony Jones. They all have really good videos that can take you far.

No, I look at it on a screen while I draw it on paper. Any parts I can't draw, I make up, or if I want to exaggerate something I'll fill it in.

It's probably more of a study, but I'm too scared to throw that term around /ic/. Basically, what happened to this guy >>2448638 happened to me earlier. So now I just say "copy" and people just move on, and we can all get back to drawing.

FWIW it was a good lesson. It never crossed my mind that credit could be misappropriated or that my drawings could be deceiving.

I don't regret it all that much. I had a lot of fun in that time.
I'm still young and figure- with constant studying and practice- I can completely unlearn my bad drawing habits in about 2 more years.

>>2455102
I kind of grew out of the cat ears thing after highschool, but thanks anon!
>>
>>2455698
I disagree.
>>
>>2455667
No I haven't, but I'm going to.
I just want to have 5 good mtg style paintings before I send an email. I currenlty have 3, but I haven't been able to finish 2 more paintings yet. I'm trying to more full illustrations done, but I have been really busy with freelancer stuff.

I have started many paintings for this, but scrapped all of those. I need something I'm 100% happy with, and that's hard. :D

>>2455682
Well, knowing someone from wizards helps, because you can easily get art directors to see your work. It doesn't really matter if you are famous artist or not, problem is getting them to see your work. If they see your email and your work is good, they will hire you.

My plan is to make 5 paintings, send email. If I don't hear back from them, I'll do 5 better paintings and send again after few months. And keep doing this until I'm good enough for them.

Not op but keep drawing, and just keep it in mind you do it for fun. Your progress is a big inspiration for me as a hobbyist myself, and always have a look at it when I'm feeling demotivated,

Not him but not everyone needs to compulsively draw nudes.
If your subject matter doesn't require you to know precise muscle anatomy, you don't need to know precise muscle anatomy. You just need to know how the body works. People wearing normal clothes don't have most their anatomy showing either.

lately all i've been doing is programming

maybe its time to fix that
>>

it seems like you have a talent, but you're not practicing the fundamentals enough or applying them accurately enough. All of the general little errors in your pictures make them look very, very cartoon-ish. It looks like you have not improved the application of your techniques, only expanded them.

I think your process is a bit flawed and you need to build it back up from figure drawing and perspective.

The style you've "developed" so to speak is just kind of wonky and not very appealing.

Rebuild it!

However, I like the subject matter, its pretty sick. I also like your colors, they have a sort of fantasy novel look.

push your limits into realism further before trying to make a semi-cartoonish style for yourself.
>>
>>2456035
Way to sound retarded.
Sound anatomy is still needed regardless of whats draped upon it.
Stop posting, you know not of what you say.
>>
>>2456134
not bad progress, how often are you drawing? hrs per day?
>>
>>2455864
Oh and what people said about bad anatomy behind the armor. Thats what I meant about figure drawin. Draw some naked people it will really really help you tighten up your shit and make your pictures a lot more spectacular
>>
>>2456147

not very often, i'd say spread out over the years about six-ish hours a week or so
>>
>>2456035
you kinda really do need to know how to draw a naked body, even a skinless body to get really gud.
>>
>>2456156
kick it up bro you could make it 3x as far in the time. start considering ways to sell your art. A coffee table book? Posters? T shirts? Then aim for those goals as you progress learning.
>>
>>2456143

If it's an anatomical flaw that's covered by armor, and you draw people in armor and aren't interested in drawing nude figures, you don't fucking need it. Your knowledge is a means to an end. It's like knowing how to draw someone's organs when you can't see them. The knowledge only matters when it matters, and if your chosen subject matter makes it so it doesn't matter, it doesn't matter.

If your anatomy is broken to the point where your anatomical errors can't be covered by armor, covering it by armor is irrelevant, because armor can't cover the mistake. So why bitch about the armor?

If you want to be a jack of all trades artist who can flexibly apply his knowledge (which is a good goal but not everyone's goal) then yes, knowing human anatomy in depth is obviously important.
Tell me how I'm wrong.

>>2456158

To git really good at what? Drawing knights? Dragons? Dogs? Trees? There are so many areas of drawing that aren't figure drawing, and in those areas in-depth anatomical knowledge isn't necessary.
I bet you Bob Ross draws shitty figures. Doesn't fucking matter, he doesn't care, he doesn't need to.

Obviously though I don't know the guy's goals, but it's silly to think that "git gud" has some random inflexible checklist. If you want to draw a knight in armor, you need to know how the body looks and moves IN ARMOR.
>>
>>2456196
Sooooo....you agree?
>>
>>2456202

Agree with what?

The guy was whining that the guy was covering anatomy with armor, I was saying it doesn't matter if he's covering anatomy he doesn't intend to draw as long as it doesn't influence how the person looks while in armor.

Knowing exactly how two muscle groups connect is irrelevant if it's covered by fucking plate armor. As long as your proportions are correct and the body isn't in a position that's unnatural, it doesn't matter. If you don't draw nude figures, a lot of anatomy knowledge isn't particularly necessary.

Now if his anatomy noticeably off in armor or out (like one arm being too big, the elbow being in the wrong spot, the neck being retardedly long, whatever) then armor doesn't cover it in the first place, so why bitch about covering anatomy with armor? It isn't. It's just bad anatomy, armor or not.
>>
>>2456196

>>2456566

As I said - then why bitch about the armor? The armor doesn't cover the flaws - he isn't covering the flaws with armor. How are you thick enough to not get this simple premise?
"Bad anatomy" comes in all shapes and sizes, some are relevant and some are not, depending on your subject matter.
This is what I mean - say you don't know where to place the bellybutton. Does it matter if you never plan to draw a shirtless person? No. Does it matter if you do? Yes.
Does knowing how wide the shoulders are matter if you never plan to draw a shirtless person? Yes. You can see it through the fucking shirt. The shirt doesn't cover it.

Having precise knowledge of anatomy is important for utility - if utility is your goal, know it. If you know your goal, and you like drawing knights, the only anatomy that fucking matters is what you can see in a suit of armor.

I'm sick of arguing with you retards, though. It sounds like you're purposely missing my point to feel smug.

stop drawing furries for a while and just draw human figures and probably animal figures as well. try to get as close to realism as you can.

You'll need your solid understanding and capabilities in realism before you make a good semi-realistic cartoon style.

Get back to the basics, everything you're doing could be improved if you drew better figures in the 1st place.

Look into loomis, etc, you need that foundation rest the other aspects of the picture is on. Your process is flawed from the ground up. Fix the basic problem and the others will be alleviated

thanks, that was not me but I think what he said was pretty much right.

No I did not go neet and draw non stop, heck most of the times I only drew from 2 to 4 hours per week and it was only in the week ends. I just drew from imagination what I analyzed in life again and again, now I can pretty much draw anything after looking at it, just got used to it. drawing "in your head" also helped me a fucking lot, my style is line art so one wxay I do that is basically simplifying everything I see in lines, and it became a habit.

I did post a long ass post here the other time it was asked, but I was too dumb to screenshot it and I don't feel like rewriting it again.
