Appeal to the people who actually look at and enjoy art.
Animefags are probably one of the biggest consumers of art in the world so they're a good start. Disney and cartoons are also up there along with video games.
As good as realism is for a technical background, its only use is a stepping stone to the more popular forms of art. you won't make a living drawing realistic people and scenery.
