you managed to sameface two people of different races. i dont know how to fix that, just an observation. maybe try defining features with darker lines to really emphasize the shapes of eyes, noses, eyebrows, mouths. its all a bit too loose so things start to blend together the same

this is an oc i've put through a few iterations. her dress was originally white but with her hair being white it felt too much so i changed it today and really like the gold as it kind of complements her familiar? but now i don't like her hair being white. pretty happy with this except i'm pretty sure her right arm in the front is weird looking.

>>2431607
her right boob looks a little wonky in shape. but i love how they're sitting naturally and so far everything else looks good from what i can tell

>>2431823
i agree you're samefacing here but for 40 mins a piece they're not bad and if you did them back to back i can see how you would same face. i think noses are your comfort zone... neither of those noses really fit the race you put them on. variation goes a long way. just differing that defining trait in them would have helped a lot- with their eyes and noses so similar it's ehh

>>2431848
back looks... flat? i don't know how to word it. for being rough and sketchy it's not awful. their left arm from the back-facing perspective is weird as is the back

Perspective study

Thoughts?
>>
>>2432763

You didn't use any vanishing points. The perspective is completely warped. You could use that effect deliberately for a naivistic style but as a perspective study it is flawed. make a proper construction next time.
>>
>>2432763
There's problems with the placement of the foreground figure. Wherever the horizon line is on a figure is the same place it would be if the figure was away or towards the viewer. The horizon is around the neck area, so if the figure was farther back, near the tree, his lower legs would be inside the sidewalk. A more accurate version would be the figure's crotch at the horizon line.
>>
File: vanish.jpg (1MB, 2338x1700px) Image search: [Google]
vanish.jpg
1MB, 2338x1700px
>>2432785
Uh? I used two vamishing points.
>>
>>2432792

I repeat: the drawing is warped. You may have them marked on the paper, but you sure as hell didn't use them properly. The details on the facade are completely inconsistent and appear to be drawn randomly. They do not follow the vanishing points. Also, the vertical lines are completely fucked. Either use a third VP or keep them straight. As it is now, they are going in all directions. Good effort for taking on a complex scene though.
>>
File: vanish.jpg (1MB, 2338x1700px) Image search: [Google]
vanish.jpg
1MB, 2338x1700px
>>2432799
Yeah, it's pretty warped. And the vertical lines are wrong too. The reason the back building is leaning to the street is because it's abandoned, so I did it on purpose. But some other lines aren't right and weren't on purpose

I did use a ruler on most lines though, as you can see here. But some are wrong, like the yellow one I marked
>>
>>2432731
Perspective seems off with the clouds and it's more like you are drawing symbols of clouds. The waves look like rocks. There's too little sense of distance with the beach.
>>
>>2432811
>most lines are wrong
>some were on purpose though
>>
>>2432824
so i could transform the clouds a bit and push more detail, try making the waves look more organic, and play the the beach mass and its fine?
>>
>>2432881
>>2432824

What's she doing, and why? What happened 10 seconds before this moment in time? What will happen 10 seconds later?
>>
>>2432731
Do studies of actual islands, clouds, mountains, etc. Use the knowledge gained there on this piece. You will have to start from scratch.

It's unclear what's the point of this landscape. What do you want to show the viewer? How do you want them to feel about it? If the only point is technical aesthetics and design, then we need to see more care and deliberation given to that. Start by designing an interesting composition, and refine from there.

Right now this looks like you're trying to render different things from imagination that you haven't studied enough to do successfully. Rendering it further won't fix what's wrong with it.

Dude, give up on this piece of shit, it's never going to be good no matter how much you polish it, because it's problems come way back from the fundamentals. Even if you magically knew how to render every element of this picture, the drawing beneath is awful. Stop wasting time and go do some individual studies, go learn how to draw.

also if its a cute girl i get to look her right in the eyes and talk to her while i draw her. you get a better drawing, and you get to look at a pretty face instead of hiding in the corner.

Asking random people if you can draw them just sounds weird, unless you do it to get the grills.
I'd say no to that, but I wouldn't mind if someone was drawing me without asking.
Most of the people don't even notice I'm drawing them even if I'm drawing their face right in front of them though.

Besides, if people know you draw them, they stop being in their natural pose. I want to draw that.
>>
>>2433377
i guess? idk i get enough gesture drawing during the week sometimes you want to be able to do a portrait right in front of someone. its hard to really focus in on a face when im half a room away from a model at figure drawing. also i get the girl's numbers afterwards so theres always the chance i get to do a painting of them later ( even if it hasn't happened yet)

If that yellow cone thing is what I think it is, and the markings on the road are what I think they are, then your road is wildly out of proportion (cars proportional to the road markings would go over that wall like a speed bump) . You're the FZD guy right? Don't they teach design there?

I'm working on this currently. This is probably my first or second drawing using photoshop or any other digital means. I never really finish stuff so I've been pushing myself to see this one through to the end.

But it looks shitty and I cant figure out why. I'm not sure if its the lighting, dragon, clashing of styles, or in general just being overall weak.

Anyone want to tear this apart so I can figure where to go from here?

>>
>>2433767

It's a mix of things anon. The texture in the dragon's shadows is good, but they're still a bit flat. Colors clash, values are off, forms are wonky, textures of the scales feel pasted on, composition is off, etcetc.

But all those things are just signs of an inexperienced artist. Finish this one, but don't stress too much over it. The important thing is that you do a lot more pieces and studies. I can tell you've got a good eye for things, considering your level, so keep working. I see potential, you just need to keep challenging yourself and draw/paint more.

Pillow shading up the bunghole. You're just putting the shading along the edges of your forms without a great deal of understanding for the planes of the face. You have a couple of ideas of how the face is mapped out, but you really need to study more and get some more structured, referenced studies under your belt.

Also the nose is the most egregious part. The tip is overly defined and bulbous.

So how fucked is this?

What do you think my biggest fundamental flaw is? I haven't done any anatomy studies, but I still feel that you can see glaring flaws pretty easily that aside. Also I got so wrapped up in trying to make sure my construction was right I forgot to draw the other arm on the other side of the body.

How bad is my perspective?
What fundamental should I start on immediately? (What is my biggest problem)

I am in desperate need of a redline.

Also, flat drawings were my biggest hurdle until recently. I was having such a huge problem everything I did out of the Loomis book I was reading made no sense to me. It wasn't until I started deconstructing objects from life and went through the first 3 lessons of draw a box that I was able to shake off the 2D, flat drawing problem that plagued me.

Would you guys say I'm finally ready for Loomis now that it's easier for me to think in 3D, or should I continue to deconstruct simple objects from life to further work on the fundamentals?

Pic related is a good example of the flat drawings I'm talking about.

I shaded it and it looked all weird simply because of my inability to think in 3 Dimensional form on paper.

Should I just go back to using draw-a-box or is there somebody better out there that can really teach me how to think in 3D? I'm still having trouble with that, but I think it's mainly an issue of perspective.

The reason I'm posting in here and not in the beginner thread is because nobody knows what they're doing in the beginner thread so nobody gets any decent help.

have you tried a different method of drawing these hands, hand guy? maybe now is the time to start building the form with tone instead of line, or maybe take two complementary colored pencils like orange and blue to do light and shadow. 1. start studying anatomy now. Don't bump around blindly and guess at the major masses and limbs.
>michael hampton, vilppu, Loomis etc etc.
2. start learning perspective ( I recommend perspective made easy) once you start understanding it. start drawing the forms in perspective. this is where the boxes you made in the body and around the head will start to make sense in relation to each other and their referenced vanishing point. once you understand at least some basics of it.

learn 1 point, 2 point 3 point perspective. possibly 5 if you want to go for it :v

draw a bunch of still-life compositions made up of as close to basic forms (spheres cylinders squares) as possible

make sure to draw from life, but drawing from a photo works too (but less well i find)

i say this because your drawing is completely flat, and you can see from how the neck connects to the top of the rib cage and how it interacts with the trapezius muscles that you have little to no understanding of cylinders.

I like the style, like nikhil singh with shades of taiyo matsumoto. Your line weight is odd in places, dunno why the outline on the upper arm and hair is so thick. I would also practice noses and try to avoid giving lips such a bold outline, but these aspects could be more attributed to style.

How much do you hate this drawing?
>>
>>2437093
Not sure you are really a kid, but anyway: It's pretty bad, dude, but that's fine, you have probably been just drawing animus as a hobby, like most of us did, and you still have plenty of time to start drawing for real.

If you really want to get better, my advice, first, is for you to draw every day. You may not always be inspired, you may not feel like drawing, but if you want to get good at it you have to treat it as work.
You may get better by simply drawing shit you want to draw, or shit you think you are good at, we call that a confort zone, but to really improve you should look into the fundamentals of drawing and challenge yourself. Forms, anatomy, perspective, shading, rendering, google all this shit. You may be thinking "oh, I know about anatomy already", and it's clear you are trying to draw the guidelines, but you don't really understand how they work. If you are doing them just because, and not really measuring anything, there is no point in doing them. Look into this guy's videos so you have an understanding of why you are doing these lines. He has some pretty good pointers for beginners, and his videos are pretty didactic:

Not bad, but the foreshortening in the hands is too extreme. Her left hand looks too big in comparison, while her right looks like a tiny gloved hand thanks to how straight the forearm is and the weird way the ulna is protruding. I know the crosshatching is a stylistic choice, but doing it where you don't need to and not following the contours properly makes it seem like she's wearing a canvas sack at parts. I do like the contrast between the forms and the thick and thin lines.

A while ago I was told to start in the beginner thread, do I qualify for Draw Thread now?

Pic related is recent sketches
>>
>>2438094
i dont really see the canvas sack thing, but i just can't figure out how to foreshorten hands with crosshatching. the thickening and thinning outlines worked a little bit but I just can't seem to get the effect right. I'll say without trying to be controversial that the proportion and shape of the hand is accurate to the model, but since I couldn't get it to recede convincingly it looks wrong. next time i'll try to experiment with the amount of lines in the hatching. like with the upper legs in that picture I could've had more closely packed lines to give a better impression of foreshortening instead of having the same distance between every hatched line.

if sometime next week i see a pose with foreshortened hands I'll just strictly study that, and i'll try to do some individual ones from my own hand today

you can't think form, focus on studying drawing form, volume and 3D just with lines and forget values or proportions and focus on that fundamental alone, and practice it with simple things.

You're not training in the right direction

Study classic artists sketches rather than photos as complex exercices
>>
>>2438146
Perspective is off, she looks like she is behind the hand thing instead of infront, Colors palette is bland (too many warm colors and the colors themselves are muddy) Values are bad (not enough light dark contrast) and painting shows lack of experience. It wasn't supposed to show form, I was practicing cartoonistic styles. I will practice form anyway.

I don't just draw from photos and I recently drew classics in pic related (I don't feel like resizing)

The background color is often chosen in a way that it contrasts the character, not blend it in.
You have shading on shading, but it's so complex and low contrast that there might as well been no shading.

Look at something like this http://pixeljoint.com/pixelart/102691.htm
It has simple shading, and that's beauty. Simplify, so you can see the form clearly.
By simplifying, you restrict your palette. Your colors and shades are all over the place trying to show detail.
It doesn't work, it only makes it flat.

This is pretty bad, dude, you are just placing pixels everywhere to give an impression it's an elaborate pixel art, but pixel art is about being economic in pixels and colors.

You make the same mistake as most beginners who go into pixel art, who think they can jump in and be good at it because it's a very small medium, so they don't have to work on anatomy or on rendering as much, yet be getting good results because of the small resolution, but it's quite the contrary, it involves more care and attention to detail to place the pixels in the right places.

This pixel art is lacking from the basis of the drawing and up, the figure looks really stiff and boring, legs and shoulders too wide, non existent face because of muh style, boring colors, lacking specially a clear light source, that would guide the light and shadows, instead of it just being wherever you feel like it.

I'd suggest you to read this tutorial, learn how to draw lines in pixel art, then the techniques of rendering paintings and all that basic stuff:
http://makegames.tumblr.com/post/42648699708/pixel-art-tutorial

Also a pretty good article about pixel art in general:

Why are you proud of not using a reference for this? It's shit mate, and that's okay, but I don't know what type of thoughts you are looking for and to get further you need to be aware of that. The fact that you posted this at all shows you are probably fresh off the boat from some hug box like reddit or real life and need to snap out of that asap to get beter.
>>
>>2438525
a less harsh way of putting what this anon said is that you're not really good enough (and i mean no offense by this) for us to give any critique.

You're still learning the basics, essentially. Critiques work well when someone is good but has some mistakes and bad habits. That's where they're valuable. The only legitimate critique anyone can give you on this is study hard and keep drawing, which are things you probably already know.

This is why beginner threads exist. You should post there.

the anatomy is completely off, there's no structure, in fact there is very little understanding of basic proportions and form in this. It speaks of someone who really hasn't studied art. There's nothing much to say about this really since the foundations just aren't there. I suggest getting started with the sticky and learning the basics.

Nobody ever replies to muh shit so i'm gonna ask a question.

I've been illustrating in ink for years and years with plans of becoming a concept artist, but I didn't realize that painting with color wouldn't come as naturally as learning to depict forms with lineart did. I'm pretty shit at painting and get discouraged because i'm used to being able to depict what I want, how I want with lineart and sketching. I'm struggling to learn even the basics of rendering/values/picking colors. I want to know if i should be practicing painting with or without lineart, and also if I should be practicing in greyscale and worry about colors after i learn to depict form properly or if I should be jumping right into using color?

Every time i use color it just disappoints me and I end up dropping the painting half way through. Pic very related.

I know you're just starting on the coloring here, but just looking at what's provided, the values need to be punched up, and the color choices are dull. Keep in mind what lightsource you want to introduce, the strength of it, the color of it. A dynamic lightsource can help tell the story of an image or add visual interest.

Perhaps do color/value master studies of other works that have your color goals in mind (artists or pieces that look as you desire your own finished products to look like). That can help you familiarize your self with the strategies involved in reaching that final product.

also I didn't reply to your linework cause it looked fine. Maybe more detail in the ear would be nice.

reflect what is adjacent to the face of the mirror "into" the mirror, and keep it in perspective as if the mirror were a window and the reflection continued and was cropped by the shape of the knife in whatever perspective it is in. this is only true because the vertical plane of the knife is perpendicular to the horizontal plane of the object it is resting on. the angle of the reflection would change if the vertical of the knife were at an angle with the horizontal surface.

also
>does it look better
>better

When you're revising technical details, this isn't just semantics, it's important to not mix up subjective assessments with objective assessments. your rendering of the reflection is not "bad", it's inaccurate, which can be bad or good depending on the context.

A swollen lip does not change where the lower and upper lips join though. The corners should line up (pic related, he took an inceskate to the face so his upper lip is swollen.

Also if his lower lip is supposed to be the unaffected one, it's so damn small width wise, it's completely out of proportion to the rest of the face.

It's always been a little strange to me when an artist never actually conceptualized where their figure is despite having chosen and defined a lightsource. I mean, it should be location that defines the light sources direction, intensity and color, not the other way around.

you've got firez syndrome. features should be well defined to accentuate what makes their eyes, mouth, eyebrows, and nose different than someone else's. you should be able to do it in very economic lines. even if the rest of the face is rendered keep features loose to retain their personality. Your face is too rendered to have any character in it's current form. this was just me screwing around with a mouse but i think it illustrates my point.
>>
>>2439786
>keep features loose
keep features tight is what i meant. i have a hard time explaining this stuff. rest loose, features tight.

How is your approach, hand guy?
Working the contour first? Construction as Loomis?

I do find your hands very appealing, wanna try your approach.
>>
>>2439836
if you honestly want to get better at drawing hands like those you need to give up on drawings looking good for a while and just draw freehand everything. pick a line to start on, draw the rest of the lines based on that one line. no construction. as you get more accurate they'll look better. at the start they'll look terrible. but that's how you learn to draw. in theory you should be able to just look at one spot somewhere in a still life or landscape in 15 years of doing freehand life drawing and just draw it. just fuckin go. not worry about perspective or measurements or construction just be able to draw the scene in front of you and it'll look right because you are so amazingly accurate. that's my hope at least.
