Made an instagram recently, going pretty good.

So I post fanart on my Tumblr quite a bit and it only gets maybe, 40 - 100 notes at most. Then I did one pic which spiked into the thousands. I'm wondering why the hell that is when I've done fanart of other popular things as well (Gravity Falls, Steven Universe). I've also noticed most of the notes are reblogs, whereas my lower-numbered bits are only likes.

I have friends too. I think the thing is just to balance them and your own drawing responsibilities, making sure to have them understand that you're not just bailing on them. And with the saving energy thing, think about it like this:

My assumption is that usually the ones that take off get reblogged by a blog that has a lot of followers who reblog their own stuff. You get a knock-on effect.

I've found that when I do fan-art the popular ones usually get reblogged by like one decent sized blog and then rocket for a day or two.

yakbone.tumblr.com is my aestheticky referency blog, @morostahmo on IG is where the art goes. I try to get in at least 3 hours a day.

Is tumblr or insta better for sharing art? Instagram feels like everyones trying to upload a perfectly framed and edited product whereas tumblr seems more comfortable for sketchy stuff and just tracking growth in general.

Oh yeah, the ability for one artist to get more followers than another is not dependent on their skill level or their ability to market their "brand" of art.
Nah, it's totally because one artist has a vagina and the other does not.

If you actually look into how they present their blog or how they work, I guarantee you that it's their output, skill level, and the pandering to various groups that nets them their notability, not their parts.

Now how they're treated by their followers is a different story, of course. Putting artists on a pedestal is kind of common and their sex/orientation is usually one point that people like to focus on.
However, in regards to gaining followers, the gender is irrelevant. There aren't people who follow artists solely because they're women. And even if there are, they are not people you should care about anyway so whatever.
