This is a pretty accurate description. I think they get a lot better once they've hit the bump limit. Since then you just have the people to actually want to discuss LAS, not just random people who see the thread on the first page and feel mischievous.

I used to be this way until LAS upped my motivation, actually. I think I produced a finished piece every few months. I know this isn't really helpful advice, but for me a huge part of it was just getting over the intimidation factor through forcing myself to finish things. It seems like a big commitment to finish something, but you just need to realize that all it really is is adding detail and refinement. Are your sketches just lines or have you been working with value? Black and white or any color? You'll probably need to work with value and color, which will take some learning if you've been keeping it more simple. I think planning helps a lot too. Consider what you want to convey in the piece, draw thumbnails (focusing on composition and value), choose the thumbnail that you think looks the best and go through the steps of sketching and adding values, coloring and rendering, and refining. If you don't really know what to do, consider watching speedpaints to get an idea of other artists' processes. But really, all it is is practice and forcing yourself outside of your comfort zone. I'm already much more comfortable with finished pieces than I was before LAS.

If not, it should be easy to just keep your pen in the same place whenever you aren't using it. Oh, I can see why you're intimidated then. You'll need to learn how to render first, there should be resources for that in the sticky. Try copying grayscale photos as well. You'll need to learn color too, but that should probably come after you're somewhat comfortable with value. James Gurney's book is 10/10. And if you weren't already, you'll especially need to think in 3D to shade well. Good luck and work hard, this is a pretty huge area to just now be breaching.

I'm still learning color myself, can't really help you there, but I think that purple color in your palette is a nice one and if you'd blended less and been more bold with it your shadows would look better. most of it would look better, actually

also next time you might wanna like draw over or darken the shadows in areas like the paws to define them better. just a touch of defining really helps brings shapes out like the mane and stuff

btw did you shade from light to dark or dark to light? or did you start with a neutral shade and go from there?

I want to define it more but I needed to know which way to go in terms of value and saturation. I started with a midtone then added some shadow and moved to light.

I liked that purple a lot too. Your hues look good and the saturation is mostly good, you just need more contrast in the values. On second look, I think the head needs some of that more saturated gold that's in the forelimbs, it looks pale in comparison.

Nice, that's good to know. I had wanted to ask that specifically, whether I should go with the saturation level of the head or the body. I liked the colorfulness of the body but was worried it was too much. I'll try and bring everything up to that level then, and hopefully I won't go overboard. You guys liking that purple choice makes me think maybe my instincts are getting better though. Hopefully it won't be too many more pictures before I'm able to judge this better myself.
