Know what breaks my heart? When an artist spends HOURS rendering a piece of shit. Watching them build upon broken fundamentals while fishing for compliments and back pats all the while.

It's the same as with complimenting appearance. It's annoying to have to awkwardly fight to give someone a compliment.

If someone is giving you a compliment without you actively showing them your work, just shut up and take it. Chances are you're better than they are and their compliment was genuine so why be a dick just because you can see your mistakes?

I have to remember this everytime my fiance compliments my art because he genuinely likes my work and can't see anything wrong with it because he's not artistically educated, so I try to remember he's being earnest and accept itb ecause when I fight him on it "ugh no it looks like poop" he just gets sad and it looks like I don't believe him rather than me recognizing what I see as not very good.

The thing is, if they only draw for a hobby and don't draw everyday, maybe only draw once a year or so, that's pretty good progress.

Remember not everyone who draws wants to do so profesionally. A lot of people do so for fun and slow progress for them isn't a big deal. For a lot of people just having fun in artistic communities and sharing in memes like this are fun enough.

That's why these cringe threads make me uncomfortable because a distinction between artist who wants to go pro versus artist who draws for fun is never made so I don' know if I'm laughing at someone who hasn't made progress in ten years because they were in law school or someone who's ignoring fundamentals because "muh style" for ten years but still states that they'll be a famous manga-ka.

It looks like their rendering is the biggest problem honestly. The figure itsself doesn't change in quality which makes me think they eyeball heavily or flat out trace. The fact that they can't color gives it away because the coloring doesn't change much, just the program used.

For a digital drawing, this portrait has a wonderful soft texture. You left no hard edges for us to get caught on. The piece is very kind to our eyes with such a smooth and gentle flow. Visually and texturally, I think the technique resides somewhere between traditional pencil sketching and a water color wash. It's hard to believe this piece is purely digital. You are a master at your craft.

Your subject is wonderful. It's easy to see how you would be moved to create such a portrait. I am especially drawn to her expression, though I can't say exactly why. There seems to be so much going on behind those eyes, and more than a little mischief. I think I understand her hand in the lower left corner. It seems to play to the mood and to her expression. I believe that she's playfully putting someone in their place.

Softness of line, subtlety of shade, and just enough contrast to provide the visual depth we need, all combine to create a piece which is visually satisfying, and which I think may have been difficult to accomplish digitally. I believe this portrait would also lend itself well to traditional pencil drawing.

It's touching and real. It's emotive yet easy going. It's quite beautiful to me.

I have no real changes to suggest. You have done it all.

Just be self aware, anon. Make sure you be self critical, and occasionally put your stuff out there for critique (from somebody you can count on to not blow smoke up your ass) and listen to what people say. Don't bother with cultivating a style until you know what you're doing, because anything you cultivate as a beginner will look like garbage and be used as a crutch to prevent learning actual difficult things.

90% of cringe material comes from Deviantart autists who are incapable or self reflecting and get no useful criticism.

And if you self teach, for god's sake don't think self teaching means 'figure it out all on my own and reinvent the wheel', there are plenty of free and 'free' materials for learning online. Some jackasses think that if they try and learn from anyone it'll damage 'their style'.
